My mother's family had always rescued dogs.

However, once she and my father married, they decided they wanted a breed - something predictable and known to be good with children. Something trainable, intelligent, and good-sized. Something that would tolerate grabby-hands from small kids.

They decided on Lexy - our Sheltie. She is still alive and well although very deaf. She gets confused often. She is a very good dog. She was chosen out of her litter using the Monks of New Sketes' methods. She was submissive to people but confident in personality. She was also a good size.

I vaguely recall being with them when she was chosen. They visited several litters before deciding on her.

I got Oreo on my 14th birthday. Oreo is a black and white Papillon. My parents decided that would be the next breed that was right for us (and, after doing research, I heartily agreed) so I was allowed to get a puppy. There were four puppies altogether. I picked Oreo because she was cute (even though she was a mismark) and the most well-behaved. She didn't cry when taken away from mommy and had a healthy sense of curiosity. When I held her I knew I was holding my future puppy. I wasn't interested in the other ones.

My parents agreed that I picked the right puppy. She is a good dog.

Zoey is a Sheltie. We decided that we wanted another Sheltie after Dini (technically my grandparents' dog) died. They didn't want to take care of another dog, and since they live next door, we complied and picked Zoey. I picked Zoey out of her litter because she wasn't overly dominant nor submissive. She was confident but placid and very cute.

She is a good girl. Her energy never ceases to amaze me.

I picked Riley (another Papillon) out of his litter last year. He was the only puppy left. He was so quiet and well-behaved while we held him, listening to the breeder tell us all we needed to know. His sister had been spoken for and his brother had something wrong with him. (She was taking him to the vet; I wonder what happened to him.)

Oreo bonded with me the strongest, but Riley has stolen my heart. I love them all, but there's something special about Riley. That one dog who comes once in a lifetime.

He is intelligent and listens the first time. I've always had well-behaved dogs, but none like him. Whenever I open my mouth he runs over and listens. He tries so hard to understand is good-natured about everything in the world. He's confident and cheeky, but not dominant in the slightest. He's never very trying and will comply with the most ridiculous requests to make you happy.

He's eager to please but not clingy. He will cuddle with you but just as soon play a rigorous game of fetch. Oreo is Miss Clingy, but I'm so glad he isn't.

And that was a lengthy description of our living dogs. :)

Why did my thread get put in here? It was more about how the preceptions we have as children can influence our views as adults....when it comes to dogs.

I was seeing if it was the same way for other people.

I had a good thread why did it get put in someone elses thread?

it was merged by a mod because the threads were very similar, the answers are still here :) now all the diffrent views from both threads are in one place

yeah but the point of my thread was not the point of this thread so it sucks that this happened......oh well I redid so the point was upfront
It was meant to be a stand alone thread not mixed with someone elses thread that had nothing to do with where I was going with it. And its at the end of this thread where no one will even see it......I wanted to show off my dog, talk about why I got her, and talk a little psychology

I don't think you get to control how people respond to your thread. *shrug*

Yeah I know that but now my thread is hidden in this thread and it kind of made me upset but I'm just going to walk away from it and let it go....no since getting upset about it, its a stupid thing to get upset about. So I've let it go

I love reading everyone's posts!

I didn't exactly go about it the right way with Bailey; I totally lucked into him.

I was volunteering at a rescue. There was a litter of adorable little baby puppies that basically piled on each other and slept all day. I wasn't supposed to adopt, but I kept going over and visiting him. When there was down time, I would pick him up and snuggle with him as I walked around (and got rather annoyed when asked to mop the floor 'cause I just wanted to snuggle with him!).

At one point, I sat in an ex pen with him and he totally turned on -- ran around and around like a crazy guy. He started to attract attention, including of the family who was playing with his sister. And I got super anxious that someone would ask for him, so immediately went over to the coordinators to announce that I wanted to take him home.

I couldn't have done any better. He is absolutely perfect for me and we have a really great bond. Adopting him is absolutely one of the best things I've ever done. I can believe how I lucked into it!

With OC it was a choice between him and his brother as his sister was being kept by the breeder and his other brother was already spoken for. When I approached the kennel he was the first one up and against the chainlink watching what was up. He didnt make any sort of sounds, just watched. As his other siblings approached the fence he would bully them back if they were in his way. As the breeder talked to me and my mom i had OC (at the breeder's he was known as Smiley) in my arms and he was being a complete lil sh*t LOL Chewing on my hair, wiggly wanting to run around, etc. When I put him down he ran over to the farm Lab, Midnight, and latched on to her tail resulting in a strong correction from her. When she let him back up he jumped and nipped her face! LOL I was in love :p He was that dominant, mischievious cheeky lil pup that was perfect for me! Oh, and he still doesn't like to cuddle LOL

Ronan just kinda happened...He had been my lead dog while owned by someone else since he was 2 years old. At 5 years old his owner could no longer keep him and told me either I take him or he will be forced to sell him without any guarantee that I could continue racing him. Obviously I took him and I couldn't be happier that I did!

Eve was chosen for me out of a litter of six. Looks-wise, were I left on my own to choose a pup, I still would've taken her. I love the way she looks, I love how athletic she is, I love her soft fur and cute, pointy little face. But above all I love her mind - she's a good learner, a great listener, and a hard worker.

Millie and I chose each other. She was the littlest out of a litter of six and needed me most. I in turn ended up needing her badly as well.
I loved that she looked so much like her mom. I loved her tail and her spotted paw. I loved her soulful eyes and her airplane ears that stayed too big for her head until she was a year old. I loved how she had her own way of doing things, like standing in one bowl and eating out of the other, and the way her rear end went a little to the side when she ran.
I know I made the right choice.
I love the border collie intensity of her mind, the quickness in which she learns, and her unwavering loyalty.

My mom chose Lucy for me. I love the little beast and I think my mom did a great job.

i don't remember getting shiner. that was the first dog we had and she was my older brothers.

lady i got from my friend. her brother was an abusive drunk and beat the crap out of her all the time. definitely not a great dog for a little kid. she took FOREVER to open up to anyone but me. was afraid of toys, moving things, sounds, people until she died. but i loved her.

yoshi is my first dog that is just mine that i picked out. i didn't even want her i wanted a puppy i had seen at the shelter a few days before. i went back to make sure the puppy wasn't claimed yet and walked by her cage. i had seen her the first day but just walked past. she was a LOT taller than the other puppies there. and was about 4 months old.

i walked by and looked over and saw a bunch of little puppies pressed against the cage door to get at me and behind them i saw yoshi. an insane, yappy, terrier looking, half starved to death dog, jumping everywhere landing on other puppies following me wherever i went with her eyes.

they were taking her out to be put down and offered her to another couple who was there but they said they 'didn't want the ugly white dog' she was offered to me, totally not what i was looking for and i said yes. also was told by them she was a boy, should have checked but didn't lol. yoshi is my heart dog though and i don't know what would have happened if i hadn't gotten her but the other puppy instead. she knows how i feel, is great with people, is polite when going to other peoples homes, knows her commands and is completely trustworthy off leash when camping or hiking.

I first saw Boo online when searching for dogs. I loved her looks and her bio said that she seemed to be highly trainable and have a sense of humor once you'd gotten to know her. We went to visit her and she was pretty mellow, sitting beside the bars of her cage like a cat, letting you pet her, rather than bouncing all over the place and barking. We brought her out to meet her, and after a little while, she was whacking tennis balls around the room with her paws and just being adorable. We weren't sure we wanted her then, but after coming back twice to see her again, we decided to go for it, and she's just perfect.
We were a bit hesitant, because the shelter workers said that she didn't like her neck being touched and that she was listed as having growled at one of the shelter workers (from the shelter that my shelter pulled her from) when they approached her cage. We haven't had any issues on either account - she's wonderful.
