I'd rather they ban prong collars and choke chains. I've seen many injuries from the incorrect use of these "training tools", but the worst I've seen from shock collars is from when people just leave the collar on all the time and they get a pressure necrosis.

What about people who live in a community that isn't allowed to put up a fence, so they have an invisible fence?

Guess those folks are SOL.

Its a good and bad thing. Bark collars and invisible fence options go out the window. Does this mean more dogs will be debarked? The spray collars work well for most dogs.

Its a good thing that it will keep the remote devices out of the hands of stupid/lazy people. I have met so many e collar trained dogs, both pet owner trained and pro trained. Its not a pretty sight.

But I don't think banning is the right thing, education would be better. People will still use them (just sneakily)

More injuries might result from prongs/chokes and there are definately legitimate uses for shock collars in very limited circumstances. So, I basically disagree with this. But I have more sympathy with this that many similar laws, for the simple reason I have seen too many people using their shock collar controller as if it was a video game controller. Zap! Zap! Zap! Zap Zap Zap!! Zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap! Its as if they forget that it hurts because the don't have to use actual physical force.

Remind me never to go there. They are an amazing training tool. I use a prong on all my dogs. I prefer them ten fold over choke colars. Shock collars are great in experianced hands. Why should I be punished because there are idiots out there. They tell you how to train your dogs then they start with the kids

Errrr - you won't find prong collars in the UK to begin with.

You also will no find debarked dogs.

Funny how all the people on the UK forums are pleased with this move - and wait.....

WE ALL OWN DOGS!! And trained them without the use of prongs/chokers/electricity.

And they're (mostly!) all obedient!!

Shock horror!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the right hands a stick can be a useful training aid. But unfortunately, only 1 in 10 people have the right hands.

The rest haven't a clue.

Should that 1 person suffer because of 9 idiots???

Should the 9 dogs suffer for the 1 ok one?

Sort of torn.

They may do good in the right hands, but who is to say whose hands those are?

I see too many idiots yanking their dog along on a choke chain or prong collar and it makes me sick. I have heard of usefulness of the shock collars, but even then, they scare me. It all makes me very glad that I do not feel a need to train my dogs with such tools and wouldn't mind living where they aren't allowed.

Yep, it's the "stupid people" arguement.

The same one that the BSL folks use. Has BSL been inplemented in Wales?

Outlaw certain tools, outlaw certain dogs...Hey, why not just outlaw stupid people! :p

How can this be compared to BSL?

That's the old - I have nothing valid to say so I'll use the BSL card?

Like throwing in racism or child abuse when you're talking about potatoes.

How about we have NO laws and just rely on common sense alone!!

I know it's wrong to steal, but hey.

I know it's wrong to hit babies - but HEY!!

I know it's not good to beat my kids - but HEEEY!!!

It's ok, cos I do it properly :D

My children and animals are safe because I have common sense :D

How about the rest of em?

Well I won't say I'm against it, I abhor the things, I don't care if they are "good" in the right hands you are still shocking your dog and as was said I'm sure there are FAR more people who go out and get one before even bothering to use other methods, slap them on and shock the dog enough to make him jump for every single mistake they make than people who use it for one behavior and shock "appropriately".

And here was me thinking this was a thread about collars :D

See my above thread.

"Oh noes, someone wants to take my training tool off me - you MUST be a racists nazi, I bet you burn statues of christ on your front lawn, oh and also that must mean you drown kittens"

People who don't shock their dogs support BSL - you heard it here 1st guys :D

:rofl1:

BSL is happening here as well.
...as is the effort to ban e-collars by our own batch of holy *cough*APDT*cough* crusaders.

Sorry, but the BSL arguement is the same...unless these dogs are vicious ticking time bombs, no matter who owns them. A tool in the wrong hands is no different than certain breeds in the wrong hands, IMO.

Good thing the government is leaving it up to individual cities to decide on BSL. At least here you can move to another part of the country.

Then again, I wonder if I should look into Canada? :lol-sign:
