well my question is, i've had my little maltese for 4 years now, and i really have not taken any vacations ever since i got him, now im ready to travel maybe for 3 weeks and im really stuck as to what i can do with my dog, its so hard to leave him with someone else and besides they charge 40$ a day and i think that is sooooooooo much money, so i really cannot travel and i want to see what you guys think and deal with issues such as this, thanks so much all :):hail:

Teeny can be kenneled as I've left her for overnights since I first brought her home. Makes life easier. It can be expensive to kennel, but $40 a day is absurd for a base-rate. I would look for a different kennel.

Also instead of a commercial kennel many people run smaller kennels out of their homes, and you'll find some that are small dog specific.

Another option is to see if you have friends or family who could stay at your house with your pup. You could hire a professional, but they'll be far more expensive than a kennel stay (starts at $70 per night around here).

OR you could even see if someone could take him for you. My Greyhound can't be kenneled due to me spoiling him horribly, so when I go anywhere he stays with family or friends.

Can you do a vacation where you bring him with you? There are a lot of places you can go that will allow pets.

The last time we went away, we left Bruzer and Midnite with my sister. I packaged up all their raw meals for each day and gave her instructions on how to feed (open bag, dump on grass). We brought Gunnar with us since we were going to visit family down south. Now with Daisy, it will be a bit different. I don't know if my sister could handle her, and she's got a lot of younger kids who would go flying if Daisy gets the zoomies and plows into them. So, our next vacation will probably entail bringing her too. Things like camping, hiking, all that kind of stuff is big dog friendly. Bruzer enjoys going to my sisters as he gets more spoiled than he is here, and he's not the hiking or camping type anyway. Unfortunately, no 5 star resorts or anything, but that's the price you pay to have dogs!

^^This is what we try and do every summer :) I don't care for leaving my dog at the kennel, and if there is no one available for staying here to pet sit..........we go somewhere dog friendly.

Many hotels are dog friendly these days, and you can take the crate for trips away from the hotel :)

Just went on a honeymoon one month ago...and you guessed it all THREE dogs came with us!! We stayed in hotels and chalets that allowed pets. It was easy, we sat down on the computer and found a list of pet friendly accomodations and telephoned them all to be sure that pet friendly meant 3 dogs could come along and that they had no size restrictions on the dogs. If for some reason we want to get away without the 'kids' then we have someone come and stay in our home with our dogs, usually my FIL or one of our good friends who is VERY dog experienced. This way I don't have to worry about the dogs, I know that they are being spoiled rotten (especially if Grandad is looking after them!).

I have my brother (who's a college student) come live at my place when we go away on vacation. This way, the dogs' routines are not disrupted, and my brother can have fun having the house all to himself :). He did confess that he fed the dogs icecream for lunch & McDonnal's burgers for dinner once! :lol-sign:

When we go on vacation, we either bring the dogs with us, or we have my parents watch them. That way, I don't have to worry about how they are doing...

To kennel my 3 dogs, it would be between $50-100 a night at a good place.

I have 2 inside cats and 2 large dogs. We have a trusted petsitter to come in once a day and take care of the cats and we kennel the 2 dogs. The petsitter charges us $15 a day, but the kennel is a little more....something like $15 for each dog a day, but it's worth the peace of mind. I don't want to leave the dogs outside by themselves that length of time.

thank you so much everyone, my problem is that i dont have family to look after my dog, also i want to travel to europe for 2 weeks and i think taking my dog wiht me will be so hard since i want to go everywhere in the country, although i would love to take him with me, but it will be just so hard to take him with me, so i guess a kennel for 15$ a day is not to bad, peace of mind for sure, my dog is very attached to me and i feel bad leaving him in the first place, butya, i just wish there was something easier, o well cant have my cake and eat it to right :)

You could also hire a pet sitter to come to your house and let him out during the day. They aren't very expensive and he gets to stay in the comfort of his own home. I have 3 large dogs and to bored them at a place that I trust would be at least $100 a day for all 3. I found a licensed, and bonded pet sitter that has a ton references. She will either come to place 3-4 times a day or will actually stay at my place while I'm gone. I haven't decided yet. But either way it's $55 a day for her to do this. It's kinda expensive but I like the fact that the dogs get to sleep in their bed and sit on their couch instead of being some where strange. Besides 2 of mine wouldn't fare very well at a kennel.

The cost of the kennel/pet sitter is going to be a drop in the bucket compared to 3 weeks in Europe! Do you have any coworkers or friends with dogs or who like dogs that would be willing to watch him? I recently pet sat for friends as they had done it for us--so perhaps you could find a situation like this--a coworker/friend who could watch you little one while you are gone and then you could do the same for them when they go on vacation?

im lucky i have family and friends willing to look after my "kids" if i need to be away, but i personally just dont go on vacation (and probably wouldnt without them because i actually miss them like crazy when there not around)

if i HAD to though and there wasnt someone i trusted to come in, they are not used to being kenneld and a boarding situation would stress them too much. and i love them too much to do that, they are well worth the $100 a week it would cost to get a bonded and insured pet sitter come into my home a couple times a day to check on them.

there my kids...i wouldnt skimp on human day care for a human child so i wont skimp on my dogs.

Honestly Cider is my first consideration when I plan on going somewhere.. You seem to have made it your last.. I'd be wary of anywhere super cheap. And if there's any holiday in the tiem you plan on being gone, they may already be full for part of that time period.

As stated above. If you can afford three weeks in europe, you can afford proper care for your pet while you are away.

I hate leaving my dogs, too. But when I go someplace I use PetSuites for $18 a night. ( I guess they are a local chain of pet motels.) I know they'll be fine there, but I miss them.

I may be wrong.....but I think when you bring in an animal into another country, don't they require the animal to be quarrentined for a certain length of time to make sure the animal isn't bringing in any unknown diseases, etc? I thought I heard that somewhere, but maybe it's only if you're moving to that country. If that would happen that would totally ruin your vacation.
