It's maddening. When the neighbor's dog attacked my wife, kids and dog, they quarantined them for 10 days and got them back. This dog didn't have current records, a license or anything. I don't even know if they were cited. So if I want to get the dog taken away I need to file papers and make the effort. AC should be doing this, no?

I feel for her. It's devastating for that to happen, especially the way it went down. Mia was murdered, plain and simple. I didn't know Miakoda or her dog but my thoughts are with her.

Oh my God. That's horrible . . . That a life can be ruined so abruptly and purposelessly just because some jackass can't control his dog. Poor Mia and poor Cole, losing his friend. :(

Here's the post: (Warning, pics of the wound....)

{edited by mod- direct links not allowed}
Wow that's a pretty serious wound. :( Thanks for finding the original post, Laurelin, what I posted was a crosspost of a crosspost. I went looking for the original, but I couldn't figure out which board to look on. Miakoda seems to belong to a lot of boards.

I read through that thread on the other board and she indicated that the owner of the lab agreed to euthanize his dog. Not that that will ease the heartbreak of her loss . . . :(

I read that too

here is the post where she updated them about it

Update:

A sheriff's deputy came by this morning for a couple of reasons. One, he wanted to see how we were doing. His sympathy and kindness is amazing.

Two, the guy down the street bailed out this morning. This is where it gets frustrating. His statement to the police claimed that he wasn't intentionally trying to shoot Miakoda. He claims that he was just concerned that I had already been bitten and he didn't want anyone else to be hurt so the only thing he could think of was to shoot one of the dogs. He stated that the dogs were moving and twisting around and he just shot at them not really knowing which dog he was aiming at. (which is all a LIE! ) So now, I've got to have several of the other neighbors who witnessed the incident go in to dispute his weak cover-up as they all saw him hitting & kicking on Mia, get pulled off by 2 other men, then go inside & come back out with the gun. If he didn't care about which dog was injured, he would've done the same to his dog....but he didn't.

Three, he did agree to have his dog euthanized at the end of the 10 day guarantine period (which all dogs must go through here in LA regardless of whether or not they've been vaccinated for rabies).

Four, since his dog was vaccinated for rabies within the year and since there is no leash law where I live, legally he was not doing breaking the law by allowing his dog loose (although it did bust out the front door without him knowing).

Today is still like a foggy dream......yesterday doesn't even seem real.

However, now is the time for me to stop fighting on the internet against the injustice, and instead make the fight personal. A war as begun, not just for me, but for all of us. And we have to fight it in person and that's what I plan on doing. On Friday I've got a meeting with a parish council member about imposing a mandatory leash law and also a dog-bite law. And although I'm not against guns by any means, where I live is going from rural to suburbia real quick and the laws of the country living have no place in neighborhoods (even 1-street ones). I'll try my best to keep y'all updated either through me typing or through Marty. And I'm working on some written stuff right now which I'll post for a proof-read before it's all submitted.

Oh my god.

I can't even imagine this. Uggh. I...this is so unbelievable. I hope this man is arrested. Mia...i remember those pictures of her and Cole.

I'm sure Cole's momma will make sure he grows up knowing the heroic, beautiful, amazing dog that saved his life. Miakoda is a hero.

here is the last update that she wrote on the other forum

Ugh! Again I typed an update and again it told me I wasn't logged in. This time limit thing is getting on my nerves.

Well, I don't feel like retyping all that I just typed, but I will let y'all know that I'm still here and I'm still trying to heal. They days go by slow and the nights even slower. But we are all taking it one day at a time.

I'm currently trying to get the civil suit going and we hope to file early next week. We've gotten statements from all but 1 of the witnesses and these include a written account from a 13-year-old girl.

I am in contact with a pro-"pit bull" Baton Rouge councilman who is helping me to go about letter writing in the right way. As soon as we decide on how to get these letters out and to whom they should be directed to, I'll let you know.

Thanks again everyone and take care.

Still don't understand why linking to other forums is so bad, there's a tremendous wealth of information out there...

God, I can't even believe this, and it wasn't even like Mia was killed by the other dog, someone shot her. That is just reprehensible. I'm really glad there were witnesses, else I'm sure Mia's owner would have gotten the short end of the stick. All the other owner would have had to say is that his dog got attacked by the "Pit Bull," and it'd be over, Game, Set, Match.

RIP Mia, you died a hero.

Just to cross post what I have read:

Today I got the phone call from the clinic that Miakoda's ashes were in. So I guess it is over......It is real.....It is finished. I am undecided as to where to spread her ashes, but for now she will reside in my bedroom where she loved to hang out.

We also filed the lawsuit today against Mr. S.O.B. and I need to send a heartfealt thanks to my good friend and attorney, Margaret, who worked all through the night for several nights over the past week & a half in order to get this going so quickly. It's not for much, but any monetary rewards won will be donated to a reputable cause whether it be for local "pit bull" spays/neuters or to reputable organizations that are actively fighting B.S.L.

And here's my favorite pic which will be included in my book of letters that will be distributed.
(In case I didn't fill this board in, what we have decided to do for all those willing to write letters not just on Mia's behalf or my behalf but on the behalf of ALL 'pit bulls' and their owners, is to have everyone send their letters to a designated email address. We will collect the letters for a time period of about 2-3 weeks-& probably more. After that time, I will print out numerous copies and make them into one large "book" that will then be sent out to local news media and government officials. The idea came from Mr. Joe Greco who is a B.R. city councilman. He stated that truthfully most people delete the emails either before reading them or after reading only 1 or 2 lines. He said they tend to read hard copies more times than not and truthfully a book of 100+ letters is bound to peak interest and curiosity. Because for once we will all be speaking together as one loud voice. All letters should be addressed "To whom it may concern" or "Dear sir or madam" and I will post the email address after running it by Marty as it's normally against forum rules to post email addresses in an open forum. I can only ask that you all take some time to write a letter, even if it's only one or two paragraphs, and please refrain from foul language.)

RIP Miakoda (February 27, 2003 - August 26, 2007)
