Why do people throw pets away and then say they miss them? i really never understand that. Someone who would throw dogs ( or cats) away like they are trash is being a hypocrite when they say they "miss" them. Had to get that off of my chest.

depends what "throwing them away" means.

Did they just get rid of the pet on a whim? just didn't want to deal with them anymore? or was there a problem? Did they feel they weren't the best home for the pet? etc etc

Getting ridding of a pet because they are a burden and not wanting to deal with taking them to the vet when some health things creep up, especially for an older dog ( or cat).

I have no issue with re-homing when appropriate and the dog is better off. However it breaks my heart when people ditch their dogs because they are a burden or they are unwilling to inconvenience themselves in the slightest to care for their pets. I saw a 12 year old English Setter being given away on kijiji because the owners did not want to deal with the older dog anymore and wanted a puppy. I cant even fathom having a dog for its entire life and then dumping it in its final years. I really wish I could have brought that dog home, it just made me sick:(

A "friend" of mine just today poisted a picture of her cat on fb saying "ANybody want a cat. Shes not worth the headaches.. Free and comes with litterbox , litter, food etc. " ...

It is just plain and simply wrong.
I also love it when people Get a dog at the worst possible time knowing that they arent in the ideal situation for one.
(ex. Going to college, Passing off there current dog to somebody because they cant take them, then Getting a dog they think is more suitible for college life, then something happens they pass off that dog too . Then start looking at breeders because they want another dog.)

really irks me and couses me pain to watch these animals go through this. I know some people arent doing it intentionally sometimes and they do care for the animals a great deal while they have them and just take on too much selfishly.
I hate it.

Its the question that comes from every pet lover that will never be answered. We cant fathom getting rid of one of our pets because to us they are not just pets but part of the family. I have a friend who has done this.

I think in some cases rehoming is better for the owner and dog all around. If you can't pay for their care anymore, if they'd be happier in a different household- I think it's a very selfless thing to do. Unfortunately most of the time that's not the case at all. People dump their dogs because they don't like their dogs' behavior but don't want to deal with training, in Fable's case there was an oops litter and they dumped the pups off at the pound. :(
I do have to say if people get rid of their dogs because they can't deal with the responsibility, even though I can't stand the fact someone does that, the dog is far better with someone else who doesn't view it as disposable.

When I was at the shelter I saw 2 owner releases that really broke my heart- a 9 year old mastiff and an 11 year old chihuahua. After all those years of friendship a high kill shelter is where they decided to send their senior dogs? WHY?

But then there is another way to look at it....

it's terrible to get rid of a dog you've had it's whole life when it gets "too old" for you to bother dealing with....

BUT if they really just don't love the dog anymore, the dog is better off going to a new family taht will take care of all of the issues that aging brings on and will be loved and cared for instead of just tolerated and get half arsed care.

People who have no empathy shouldn't own another living thing. :( (Of course, if they have no empathy, they won't recognize that in themselves.)

I rarely understand people...

Most of my dogs are/were throwaways. We got Robbie when he was 14 because his owner moved to town and decided the dog wouldn't be 'happy' in a fenced yard. So they moved away and left him to the people who bought their old house - and they didn't want him either. He was a nice dog, wasn't trained to do anything but just be a pet. He lived to be 19.

On another occasion, we found an elderly Brittany wandering down the road. Didn't belong to any of the neighbors, we asked up and down the road. I guess she was dumped because of her age - vet thought she was around 15 and had heart trouble. She didn't last the winter but at least she didn't end up hit by a car.

I really hate when people move and get rid of their pets because they can't find a place that allows pets, or its too much of a hassle ect...if you have pets you know you have to look for a place that allows pets.
And i can't stand the..we had a baby so the dog needs a new home..one of my husband's friends wife did this when we were military, we took in a dog as a foster so they would not dump it in the pound, the other 2 went super fast ( rottie and pitty) but nobody wanted the basset..just made me sick and the dogs were great with kids..ugh!

I get sooo angry at ads getting rid of senior horses. Mainly ones that say something like:

"Free senior horse. Rosy is 20 years old and too old to ride now. I grew up with this horse and love her so much, but it's time to make space for a horse that can be ridden. NOT FOR SLAUGHTER!"

Translation: I wore this horse out but feel guilty about discarding her and don't want to pay for her feed, medical, and boarding expenses for the next ten years, so want someone else to take responsibility for all that while getting zero benefit from being able to ride her. Oh yeah, I think I'm entitled to say she can't go to slaughter, even though I'm not willing to give her a nice retirement.

I agree in general, but I'm much more inclined to be more "forgiving" if the dogs actually had a chance at adoption. There are different cases of course, like at least knowing your old dog is going to be treated well. With the 2 dogs I mentioned, I'll use the mastiff as an example. Huge dog- strike against adoption. Mostly black- another strike. Old- third strike. Animal control, not a low-kill shelter with foster homes- fourth strike. The best you can get for that is the hope that dog can escape the cage before she dies. At least the chihuahua has the appeal of being small, even if he is 11 years old.
I know I sound all fired up, but it's not towards you. ;) I just am still reeling from all the dogs there, the deals they're coming up with- like pay for the license and give any donation you want, even if it's just $5- to try to get dogs adopted. I volunteered at the local humane society, which is in the same group, but still a whole other animal, and I can't fathom how someone can leave any animal there, let alone one with such low adoption chances. :(

Ugh! Agreed! Especially since a lot of people who auction old horses off for the slaughter truck can be very convincing as a lovely home for the horse. Get free old horse, take it to auction, sell it for a bit of change for a good meal and some glue. Previous owner acts like she did a great thing for her horse. She gets a nice shiny new one and as the years pass the cycle continues. It's amazing the denial of their own ignorance people have.

I can't really complain about people dumping their pets, cause I wouldn't have any of the pets I've ever had if they didn't :p

I know a few people on here have been saying I dumped Widget when she didn't turn out to be what I wanted, but meh. She was always a foster from the get-go, with the possibility of being a keeper. When she was miserable here, I found her a good home. I don't see the issue.

I love senior horses. There is so much more to being a horse person than riding.

I was SO close to going to pick up a blind/partially deaf senior Chihuahua mix from animal services last weekend. Luckily, she found (what appears to be!) a wonderful home with a woman who owns another senior chi.

I'm a sucker for the seniors that end up in rescues... makes me so sad. I really can't fathom how anyone could even THINK about "trading" their senior dog for a puppy. I love Rylie and Chloe (both are 6) more now than I did when they were puppies- they've been with me for longer!

Rehoming a pet because they don't work out in your home is much different than keeping a pet for YEARS and then dropping them off or rehoming them because you don't want to pay a pet deposit, you had a baby, they drool in your house, or they're aging and not "fun" anymore.

Oh the things I've been accused of, all because I've rehomed dogs to more appropriate homes or didn't keep foster dogs! At the end of the day, it's about what is right for the animal - And if you're going to not keep an animal anymore, for whatever reason... You need to do right by them.

It absolutely breaks my heart to see elderly dogs at animal control. In elementary school, my friend's family dumped their elderly Cocker Spaniel mix at animal control when they got a new puppy... I was devastated :( That poor dog didn't do a single thing wrong.

I also can't stand the "We're having a baby so the dogs must go" or the "We're moving and can't find a place that accepts the dogs/our dogs wouldn't be happy without a huge yard/etc." people. Responsibility is a LOST concept on these people.

And, some people will probably give me crap for it... But I can't stand military personnel who get pets. MOST of the time, they get re-stationed and those pets get dumped. YOU made the choice to join the military - deal with it. Wait to get a pet until you aren't being deployed/moved around/etc.

yeah I really don't understand that mind set at all.

Pet doesn't fit in the home... WELL you brought it home so now you must keep that animal at all costs even if that means the animal is not happy or in an ideal home. gotta keep it or you are an irresponsible jerk with no feelings and shall now be the subject of ridicule and abuse. how DARE you do what is in the best interest of the animal and the animals you already own. lol

I don't like it when people get rid of senior animals just because they can't be bothered to deal with their problems anymore. it's very sad and heartbreaking but if the animal stays in that home... will it get any veterinary care or will it just be left to waste away until it dies off? I wish people who did this would at least put some effort into finding them a new home and not just dumping them at the shelter.

but sometimes pets just don't work out and just don't fit in with the family dynamic and there is NOTHING wrong with admitting the error and finding the animal a new home. If someone really takes issue with that well... then they can come and take the animal home.

that's different than just dumping at animal control though and that does truly break my heart

I really agree with Sparks. As much as it pains me to see seniors in animal shelters, I would rather see that than see the same animals neglected, abused or entirely unappreciated by everyone in their home.

I also don't understand the sentiment that animals can never and should never be placed into a different and more suitable home if they aren't a good fit for someone. Animals adapt pretty well, even the older ones.
