I did not take it that way ( "Blaming the Amish" ) They explained that alot of Mills are run by Amish ( True ) but that there are cultural differnces there and that many Amish look at their dogs as livestock and simply do not consider themselves abusive the way we do.
Completely agree.

Baby steps, guys. If mills and pet stores get less business, that is a HUGE step in the right direction.

I thought it was very good, they got a lot of info into one hour. Yes, it would have been nice if they stated that responsible breeders do genetic testing etc but I am hopeful that the info is posted on her website etc.
We all know what puppymills are like and the conditions and yet we found it upsetting even having that knowledge. Therefore I am again hopeful that people that had no idea will be completely horrified by the proof of those videos.
I also think that their choice of which dog they showed being PTS was smart. The dog was young, healthy, not aggressive and was just a nice dog and was more than happy to go for his/her last walk. And the scene of the all those trash bags being dumped to head for the landfill was very powerful. And they could have glossed it over by never showing any of that. They could have shown any number of dogs that to many people it would have justified putting that dog to sleep, instead of the very happy go lucky, could anyones dog. That should also have an impact on shelter dogs, with lines ups to adopt them.
I think Oprah should gets some kudos from us, when you take away her position from her show, she is just an average pet owner. She has learned the hard way as many of us have, in where to obtain a dog/pup and how to train it. She is no different than many who are not actively involved in the dog world. And one thing is very evident, she is just like us in the fact that she does love her dogs...............I think they did a great thing.

I agree. For an hour long show, it covered a lot of material. While a BYB is NOT the best choice for a dog, I'd much much rather people get their dogs from breeders like we got Nikki from that actually care about their dogs and take good care of them and meet the new owners than a dog from a pet store. Once selling dogs in pet stores is taken care of, then we can start worrying more about other breeder related issues, imo.

I watched it last night in bed, and by the time they got to the euthanizing scenes, had dragged Meg up in to my arms and was kissing her almost non-stop. In our area, very few (or none) are euthanized to to crowding; it is the unhealthy, physically or emotionally, that are put to sleep. Watching the low tail-wag on the brown and white dog as he was euthanized was rough.

I thought it was a great episode. There's always more information that could be given, but I think it will at least force people to stop and think about where they are buying their pets from. As someone else said, avoiding petstores and buying from BYB's is at least a step in the right direction. Let's take what we can get.

Ahh, well, I already don't do that stuff or don't believe in doing that stuff and I don't want my name thrown into some pool to send me junk mail like "help save this dog" every other day.

Did you guys see this on Oprah's site?

Recognize a Good Breeder

When choosing a breeder look for one who does the following:

Ideally, keeps his or her pets as part of the family.
Encourages you to meet and spend time with your puppy's parents, and allows you to see where they spend most of their time. Area is clean and well maintained.
Insists on meeting potential adoptive families. Will not sell their dogs to just anyone.
Doesn't sell animals too young—sells puppies only after they are 8 to 12 weeks old, and 8 to 10 weeks old for kittens.
Can provide references from other families who have purchased puppies.
Keeps breeding dogs healthy, well fed, and well socialized.
Provides professional veterinary care for all their animals.
Performs health tests on fathers and mothers prior to breeding to ensure their puppies do not have genetic defects.
Has a good relationship with a local veterinarian and can show you records of visits for the puppy.
Bases breeding frequency on mother's health, age, condition and recuperative abilities.
Does not breed extremely young or old animals.
Discusses positive and negative aspects of particular animals and breeds with potential owners.
Encourages multiple visits to meet the puppy.
Will take back any of their animals, at any time and for any reason.

Nope, but pretty hard to argue with that:) they touched on about everything!!! The only thing I'd add is they say meet the puppys "Parents" and I would have said Mom, because the stud may not belong to the breeder... Thats just a minor picky thing though..... I am thrilled they mention genetics and not just normal vet clearance, breeding frequency and that they will always take the pup back....

That's pretty good. I'm so glad she put genetic health testing, because I wasn't expecting it to be there, honestly.
