I would use a crate but I drive a civic and it won't fit, so I use a harness. It's more to keep him back there (especially if I have to leave him alone for a few minutes) and out of trouble, but I hope it would provide a little protection in a low speed accident.

Very occasionally he is loose if I leave the tether in my husband's car or something and he's fine.

The dogs ride loose in the backseat of my car on their seat cover.

1.) Crates don't fit in my Civic.
2.) They ride well and know to not bother me when I'm driving and to keep their butts in the back.
3.) I probably *could* strap them in, but Abrams is still hit and miss on his car sickness and needs to be able to adjust his position (or lay on the floor) as he deems fit. And they like to change which window they stick their heads out of...lol

I still haven't quite figured out how we're all going to fit into my car when we have a child. I imagine Cynder will have to sit up front on whoever's lap and Abrams will be in the back with the baby. Unless I just make Abrams ride on the floor. I don't know. We'll figure it out. Lol

Definitely depends on where I'm going.

For the 2 minute drive up the road to our woods, they're loose in the back.
- Partially because Ruby chews leashes attached to her or Oz, so I don't want to lose any harnesses
If I'm driving anywhere else, they're harnessed (And Ruby doesn't come with until that issue is resolved).

I drive a Cavalier, which gives me no room for crates otherwise I'd prefer to use crates.

Edit:
Cobain and Rigby are GREAT in the car regardless of how they are riding. They will either immediately fall asleep, or lean against the door looking out the window.
Even if I am to leave the car for any reason, they just lay down and sleep until I get back.

I wish ALL of my dogs were like that...

Em, Copper, and Shadow are loose in the back, Bloo needs to be tethered or else she will only sit politely riding shotgun.

Depends. Loose on the way to agility because it's mostly back roads. Otherwise they're kenneled in the back seat.

I have a thing-amadu on the backseat. One of the hammock things. He rides loose, in the backseat (usually). He stays back there, I leave the leash on him, he rides like a champ and always has.

it's because he's awesome

It has changed, and I'm still not sure I'm happy with it.

They used to always ride loose. I now have crates in the cargo space, and they ride there probably 80% of the time. If we are just going around town, they are still loose, or if I just have one of them with me. Any interstate travel or going to/coming back from hiking, both are crated. I don't like them in the crumple zone, but my seats don't fold fully flat.

I think I will get a Variocage once I figure out what I'm doing for my next car. I don't want to buy one now and have it not fit the next car, when I will be getting rid of this one probably within the next year. I will specifically get a car that fits the size kennel I want, and/or that folds flat so I can get their crates out of the crumple zone.

The accident with the agility person in Arizona a couple of years ago still makes my stomach twist. I know nothing is ever 100% safe, but I will do anything I can to make it as safe as possible for my dogs.

I voted loose but it a not really true I guess. We keep both dogs leashed and whoever isn't driving holds onto them. I've never taken them anywhere on my own so I guess I would crate them. Chloe would be dangerous cause she always wants to be in your lap and Violet would be all over the place.

Millie has a seat belt and for now I hold Fable's leash until I can get a seat belt for her, too. If it's just Fable I put her in Millie's belt.

I can't fit a crate in there, unless it's small (like the cats' crate). I miss the Jeep! *pout*

Always in a secure crate. I've no idea if Rox would do fine loose, I use a crate for safety. It definitely makes me feel a lot better if we were in a wreck.

Generally loose. I have a Scion xD, I fold the seats flat, and they mill around or lay down. Mine are all fantastic in the car. I can fit a 30" crate in the car for the puppy if it's a long trip, otherwise she really is fine too. I guess a 20 hour round trip ride to PA at 4 months old will do that :p. Oh, and getting lost and shipped to Miami on accident.

Siri rides in a crate in the hatch of my GTI. If we use Ryan's car or a friend's car, she rides in a smaller crate that is strapped in with the seatbelt. She has always been an AMAZING rider. Goes right to sleep. Even bringing her home from Michigan/Canada.

Frodo rides in a Roadie 93% of the time. He used to have such bad anxiety that he couldn't be belted or he would have a meltdown. Then after starting meds he became the best car rider ever. Recently he has worsened, and I'm mostly sure it's due to pain :( He still rides almost always in his seatbelt, but sometimes he starts spinning and whining, I think that is his way of saying it hurts, so I will unbelt him and he settles down. I HATE having him loose, but I also don't want him in pain. I keep saying I am going to transition him to a crate. I need to actually do it.

ETA: I chose banana boat float cause nom and cause I had more than one answer :p

Loose. My car is too small for a crate. My next vehicle will probably have enough cargo room that I could have them in crates, but I would only do it if I could get the crates far enough forward to be out of the crumple zone. I don't trust any seatbelts or straps at all.

Mostly crated for Feist, sometimes she sits on my lap. Almost always loose in the back for Wes, because he's a good rider. Would like to get a vario thing, but that must wait.
