Tell me about your Pits. I am seriously considering In the future say 2 years from now on rescuing a Pit Bull. When I am in the right situation to rescue one. I just want to get know what I am getting into before I go out and do it.

The SO and I are planning on moving to fort Mcmurray and there are Pits everywhere there. Its a Minning City and there are alot of over paid young guys who get these dogs and realize they dont have the time for them ect.. There are Pits everywhere up there. So the plan of now is to hopfully rescue one from there, because I know there are alot of pits that need homes.

So Chazers, what do I need to know regarding Pit Bulls?

most of the junk labelled as pits are crossed. anything over 70# is almost certainly mixed.
this doesn't make them bad dogs, just not as consistant in personality & temperament as real pit bulldogs.
dog aggression especially same sex is normal. human aggression is not. many old dogmen kept another breed of dog around as guard dogs to keep them from being stolen.

Be prepared for a lot of your neighbors to cross the street when you walk by with your dog.

Be prepared to have your dog adequately collared and leashed on walks.
Be prepared for possible dog aggression.
Be prepared for possible animal aggression, period.
Be prepared for a dog with a lot of drive.
Be prepared to train your dog.
Be prepared to buy a breakstick (responsible pit bull owners own one) and bring it on all walks with you.

Be prepared for the most devoted dog you have ever owned.
Be prepared for the BIGGEST lovebug on the planet.
Be prepared for the goofiest dog.
Be prepared for Bully Smiles (they are the BEST).
Be prepared for a dog that is NOT shy.
Be prepared for a dog that will try his or her hardest to be a lap dog.
Be prepared for a shadow.
Be prepared for a curious dog.
Be prepared for an athlete of a dog that could go for longer walks than you can.
Be prepared for all the kisses in the world.
Be prepared for your dog to love every human that comes into your house.
Be prepared for all humans that come into your house to love your dog.

Be prepared to be a responsible dog owner because these dogs deserve it.:D
Read, read, AND READ about the breed.
Do not pretend these dogs were not bred to be dog fighters for HUNDREDS of years.
But do NOT dwell on that. Just know it and be aware of it.
Your adopted pit bull may NOT get along with resident animals, so if you have other dogs, be prepared to crate and rotate.

But I can assure you that ANY pit bull you adopt is going to love you more than anything in the world.:D

do you own or rent? renting can be a HUGE headache with a pit bull. also you need to know whether or not your insurance company will allow pits.

otherwise, what chewbecca said. i love my pit bulls (both shelter/rescue dogs), but they are very high maintenance.

badrap.org and pbrc.net are excellent resources for reading more.

Bingo!!

Also keep in mind the BSL laws in your state or any state that you may want to move in. Keep in mind that most apartments do not accept pit bulls, and many housings would not want to give their home to a pit bull owner. Be aware that many insurance companies will not insure someone with a pit bull. Be prepare to grow a VERY thick skin because the comments you get as a pit bull owner can be very upsetting. Expect much prejudice against you and your pit bull by other people.

Kiwi didn't get that memo..

seriously tho, they are fun dogs. I don't know where you live, but the main thing that "bothers" me about my dog is the thin coat and skin issues. She freezes and shivers all the time and Iam in southern california LOL also they are prone to sensitive skin and alergies.

They do love people, especially children. I have been lucky and have one that coexists with cats and dogs. If you adopt an adult you have a better idea of what you are getting, so i would recommend you go that route. :)

Be prepared to fight for every inch of couch or bed space as they are a real threat to take it from you :yikes: :p :D

Seriously, most of it has been said, however with regards to Dog Agression. If you get a dog that is 3yrs or older you will get a better idea of how your dog will view other dogs (and life in general).

As with any breed, when dog gets to 3+ years you will see their real adult personality. If you get a 4 month old puppy from someone who loves all other dogs doesn't mean when he gets to 4 that he still will feel that way. Some Pit Bulls will be fine with dogs but others will become much less tolerant of dogs who challenge them.

So I recommend for the first timer adopt a 4+yr old

Thanks guys the information you gave me is awesome! I really appreciate it! So thanks. And all the stuff you guys have said makes me want one right now, not in 2 years ha ha oh well I guess I am going to have to wait. But it gives me time to ponder on it!

And Dry creek, yes I am talking about Fort McMurray, Alberta. My SO is in school for minning engineer so we will be going anywhere the mines are and Fort Mac in a big posibility, but you wont see me staying there forever.. YUCK!!! NOT a place to raise kids. LOL

There's probably more here than you ever wanted to know, lol! http://www.chazhound.com/forums/t38419/

Oh, and after adding an APBT to my family, I agree with Chewbecca almost totally, except that the APBT is, honestly, second to the Fila in family love and loyalty. :) Close, and in a different way, but not quite.

I'm completely happy with my decision to rescue Tallulah though. She has added so much to us. She's priceless.

Admittedly, she's the cutest dog in the known universe . . . and sometimes she needs to be :rofl1:

Her capacity for mischief is infinite.
