Whimsy (Whimsical)...)
That's my Whimsy's name :)

I know two other Miras, both through agility. A Sheltie and a Golden Retriever. Didn't know either existed when I named my girl as they were in different states.
I know a PWD Meera.

I like the flyball-type names a lot on paper, but I feel weird actually using them. It just doesn't flow right for me. I had a HUGE list of names when I got Riff and basically none of them worked for him! He very nearly became Hobbes, which I still really like, but I had already started calling him Riff and it stuck. :)
For me "sport names" (or show dog names) can be either really cool and fun or they're just really awkward and make me want to ask what the person really calls their dog in every day life. I trained a show dog named Target (named so because it went with his registered name of Marksman and would look cool in ads) and that name was just so...awkward LOL It definitely didn't roll off the tongue when calling him. I shortened it to Targee but that was sort of a strange name too. I had a Sizzle here for a long time and while the name was really cute, it also was a bit awkward. I ended up calling her Fuzzy :)

I may have thought of some more...

Preacher (which is what I wanted to call Rider, and Josh didn't like it)
Crimson, which means purple, so I don't know if it will ever be used.

I'm liking some of the "sport type" names, but like a few have said it's hard to find good ones. I'm wanting to go slightly in that direction for my next pup so I'm trying to think of some good ones...

Doggie daycare ruined SO MANY names for me. I will never not think of particular dogs when I think of certain common names. And there isn't anything WRONG with that, it's just, I can NOT have a previous association with a name if I'm going to name one of my animals that. Like, from a book is fine, but an actual IRL association, I can't do it.

(I've only met ONE other Ozzy in daycare! And he was an awesome one eyed pug, lol, but my Oz was here first, so I still win.)

Indy is probably more common that I'd think, but there's never been one at the daycares I worked at. Enzo, I've never met another, Jones I've never even heard used for a dog before (though the likelyhood of that is zero) and Knox I've never heard used either.

I've run into one Indy online, heard of a few Enzos, which doesn't bother me, because Enzo is an AWESOME name, and I wish it wouldn't weird me out so bad or I would re-use it later on, but never ran into another Knox or Jones.
YES! It's either that I hear it too much, or I just have negative associations with the name due to other dog(s). Like, I used to LOVE the name Brody, but I've now known not one but two awful Brodys and now I can't even like it anymore. :(

That's funny that you've only known one Ozzy! I just checked and we have 12 Ozzys/Ozzies that come here. Some are dogs that just come in for grooming, but still. I wonder if it varies by region, too. We actually have 4 Enzos in our system, too, 3 that come regularly. Even so, I feel like that one is still pretty unusual and neat :) It's not like Bailey or Cooper, which we have 29 and 24 of, respectively. LOL Those I couldn't use even though I like them just fine.

@Aleron We have a Sizzle at work! I think it's a very cute name but yeah, doesn't quite flow day-to-day.

Yeah, that's agility for me. Especially since I volunteer as gate steward periodically so I'm reading off names for hours some days lol.

I'm personally not a fan of "sport" names, as in I can't ever see myself naming a dog something like that. Bang or Speed or Dash or Ballistic or...anything like that. They are fine it's just not what I want to call my dogs. I'm sure the type of name I like are equally distasteful to many folks so it all evens out ;)

But the fun that is had when people say, you named your dog, what?? Is worth it.

:p
"Princess Cheeseface" illicits a similar reaction lol.

You named your gundog what??

It's just a nickname I know but it's one I've called her for three years and sometimes people think it's her real one lol

I don't do the sport names. In fact, Riot is not my favorite name, but it fits her so well, LOL. I tend to pick human names from nerdy tv shows or books or games. My next puppy is going to be named Willow (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

I don't really like human names. I didn't name Crystal, but didn't want to rename her after she recognized her name. I just feel like it is too awkward if you run into someone with the same name as your dog. I actually had a neighbor named Krystal a while back, and it was awkward to call 'Crystal' in the yard, knowing that your neighbor can probably hear you. :p

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of sport names either. There's a few here and there that are cute but just not something I could see myself calling my own dog. On paper they sound cool but then I think about calling my dog 'Burst' or 'Yikes' in every day life and it just doesn't work for me... I like some that are borderline name/sporty name though. But I tend to go for human names.

I have a cousin named Summer. It's always fun when my cousin is around and I have to get the dogs to go outside or something.

"Summer, go potty!"

"I don't need to!"

:lol-sign:

I didn't name the dog Summer and I'd already known her for 4 years as a 'Summer' in her old home, so I couldn't change it.

Ha, I am so boring. I love human names for animals and I always tend to chose the most common names ever... Grace and Abby for example... just a tad boring.

I may be keeping the kitten from my parents' adopted stray and his/her name will be something simple and predictable I think. Names I like -

Bernard
Robert
Thomas
Morris

Sarah
Genevieve
Kate
Rebecca

I have always wanted to name a pet Nimue after the Lady of the Lake in the old Merlin/Arthur legends... but I just don't think my pets are cool enough to carry a unique name. :lol-sign: We'll wait and see with the kitten. I like to have a list of options and name after I get to know them a little bit.

Abby is definitely an Abby, through and through. Sharp, spunky, bright and lively. Sophie and Elsa were on my list at the time. Those names did not match her at all. Too soft and sweet!

Grace actually cracks my friends up - she is a sweet, gorgeous dog and quite motherly. But graceful and ladylike she is not lol. She's a burper, and makes a lot of guttural noises.

I suck at coming up with names. I had a long list of names I liked, and gradually it's shortened over the years. Journey was on that list, though. It was one I never thought I'd actually use, and it is more common than I prefer, but it suits my Journey perfectly.

I've already used most of my favourite names.

Dance is my favourite name ever. I got it from one of my Doberman breeder's owners, who had a dog named "Danse", and at first I thought it was weird. But then I grew to like it, and eventually loved it enough to ask permission to use it for my own puppy. I was really sad to find two more Dance's online haha. One is a Koolie (female) and the other and English Shepherd (male). But still, it's not a name I've ever come across in real life, and while a lot of people think it's weird, I love it.

Tango was my other favourite name. Not very original and there seem to be lots of dogs named Tango, but I've always loved it. I picked that name out for my Tango long before I even had a puppy in mind.

Echo was another favourite of mine. It's not super common, but not that unique either. I've met a few Echos over the years. But again, it's another name I've always liked a lot. And if it wasn't so weird to me to reuse names, I'd use it again.

As for names that I think I might use in the future, I don't have very many and who knows if they'll stick around, but here they are:

River (love this name - can't use it until Ripley's gone though as it's too similar sounding)
Tehya
Wonder
Quest
Eve
Kat
Loca
Marlo
Merlot
Puzzle
Aero
Bounce
Rue
Rowan (but now I know a dog with that name, so probably won't use it)

They aren't very original, but that's the current list. :)

I had an Obedience trainer with dogs named Whynot and Maybe. I always liked those!

Beautiful British Columbia!!
I had a bouvier named Badger. It suited him perfectly.

I would to give my dog a game of thrones themed name like Rykker, Rykken, ext ext..

I would love to name a dog nymeria and shorten it to myria for short.

I also really like the name Cordellia and shorten it to Delia. But that seems to girly for a mastiff puppy. I also like the name Dot, but again to girly.

I said I was liking more sport-like names, but I think I meant more borderline ones...definitely not in the category of Burst or Yikes! I don't know if it really counts as a "sporty" name, but I'm very fond of Surreal for a girl. It's top of the list for nextpuppy (who will hopefully be a girl...I am completely surrounded by boys!).

lol Hubby keeps threatening to name our next dog Garlic, solely because it's the worse name he's thought of so far. Evil.
To be fair, Garlic's a good bad name. It's surprisingly hard to think of bad names - even Shovel took me a while :rofl1:

I don't like people names for dogs but that's currently all we have (Avril, Jessie, Adele, Carly, and Quinn.) If we ever have a singleton litter I want to name her/him Solo. I don't know how common it is, I haven't met a dog named that yet.

I like uncommon yet simple names. Names that most people can read on paper and pronounce. Avril's moms name was Anaconda (took us forever to name her!) I really liked her name for some reason.
