One of my semi-feral adult cats who doesn't come inside much was attacked by a dog (I don't want to make this some breed debate, I am not against any breed of dog, but it was a pit bull..Actually 2),

About 45 minutes previously a brown pitbull was being chased by its owner, and my next door neighbor (Even more of a crazy cat lady then me) was spraying it with the hose and yelling at the idiot owner who was actually AFRAID of approaching his OWN dog!! I stood and watched to make sure it stayed out of my yard, and the owner caught it and took it back to his house (They live right now the street, I had never see the dogs before). Then 45 minutes after that incident I heard my neighbor yelling and running in my yard, as soon as I got out there I saw the dog with a grip on Monkey's belly area. The owner was there, and trying to get his dog off my cat. I started kicking the dog, and punching it in the face (Honestly, I could care less about causing the dog pain, anyone would have done the same thing if their animal was being attacked). A couple seconds later my neighbors husband and my brother joined in, 4 people kicking and punching this dog and him being sprayed in the face, and he still would not let go. Finally my neighbor's husband stuck his hand in the dogs mouth and pried it open, and Monkey bolted for the fence, me in pursuit, and the other pit bull almost grabbed him but I grabbed it by the scruff of the neck (Luckily it was a smaller one), and also grabbed Monkey with my other hand. My brother and the dogs owner had the brown pit bull (And the culprit) and they started walking it back to their house, and I handed the smaller one off to my neighbor, and rushed Monkey inside to see how bad he was.

Thankfully Monkey is so fat, and has a lot of side flab that the dog had a hold of skin and fat, and Monkey only has some puncture wounds, a lot of swelling, and an injured back nail from trying to claw his way out of the dogs jaws. It took us over 5 minutes to get the dog off, I thought Monkey was going to be in much worse shape but I think the dog was distracted from the water and kicking to do cause and more damage.

Both the dogs were females, and both had very saggy milk filled sacs. The owner of the dog should have found a way to contain his dogs the first time they got out, instead he allowed them to get out twice in the span of 45 minutes, and the second time the dogs ran straight to my my house. The dog is being quarantined right now, not sure what its outcome will be except the police said this was not the dogs or owners first offense, the dog had attacked something before. Hopefully it doesn't have rabies because I was bit on my finger in the process, and its swollen at the moment (Kinda hard to type!)

I am just really shaken up...I don't blame the dog, but I blame the owner. He should have learned from the first time it got out, but since its not the dogs first offense..I guess he never will learn, and he shouldn't be allowed to have dogs if he can't contain and control them. My cat was in MY yard, on my front porch. He didn't wander into someone elses yard, and the attacker dog lived on the same block, but across from the other side street, so not even near my house! I just do not understand some dog owners..Obviously these dogs are breeding machines for them, my brother went down there with the police to talk to the owners (Who were very apologetic) and he noticed the different aged litters of puppies they had, which I think they are going to get in trouble for from animal control that also came out.

I am very grateful my neighbor was outside watering her lawn at the time, or Monkey would be in much worse shape, even possibly dead.

Hes got a lot of swelling on his side, and hes on antibiotics for his toe. But he will be fine thankfully, if it were not for the help of my neighbors

honestly if you had killed the dog it would have been entirely acceptable. your FIRST responsibility is to YOUR animals on YOUR property. you may want to consider building an outdoor cattery for your cat's safety. because as long as it's an outdoor cat it is at risk not just from the irresponsible dog owner but coyote, bobcat, raccoon, large red fox, owls, hawks, eagles, and even bear & mt lion.

That's one of those scary moments in life. Tallulah's grabbed my mom's cat a couple of times when SOMEONE stupidly let her into the room where Gracie was.

Glad Monkey is going to be okay! Pops is right about the cattery. Cats are prey to so many different things, including warped humans.

This is why I love Charlotte. She actually get's REAL protective over our cat, and has chased off dogs who have tried to go after him. I'm really glad Monkey is okay.

I am glad Monkey is going to be ok. My dogs (hounds and terriers.) are good with our house cats, but would probably kill a cat that doesn't belong to us. They are always properly contained, though so it wouldn't happen unless an unknown cat wandered into our yard.

I am sick of irresponsible owners! Pit bulls and other terriers really are known for their prey drive with small animals including cats, but this could have been 100% preventable if their dogs were contained properly! :( I agree maybe an outdoor enclosure for your outdoor kitties would be best or just keep them indoors if possible. Is your cat that is semi-feral friendly enough to stay inside?

I second the cat habitat idea. Great for ferals, and wildlife.

These dogs will get loose again and you really need to be prepared to deal with that in whatever way you feel comfortable. (If it were me these dogs would be dead dogs but I realize for others a kennel lead and a one way trip to AC would be better.)

Watch that hand for infection. If you suspect anything - head in to the doctor and charge your neighbor for the visit.

There are only 2 outside cats, him and our 13 year old completely feral cat. Monkey won't be going outside again , but the feral Marilyn will never be contained, shes extremely wild, but very smart she hands out a lot in trees and on my neighbors roof, and never wanders away and is very dog aware. But Monkey had gotten used to my dogs, but the first time the dog was wandering he was sitting in a tree.

And we already made the owner aware hes paying for the vet bills.

Oh your poor kitty. So glad he's okay.

The cattery is such a great idea! I would absolutely do something like that, if your budget allows.

We have been planning a catio for years now for the inside kitties, but we haven't started yet cause my mom doesn't think ill build it so doesn't wan't to buy the supplies, so im just waiting to pay my car of by next summer and buy everything myself. I don't want any of my cats outside, its too dangerous.

It's unfortunate that no one present knew how to properly get the dog off your cat and that it took so long :( Hitting/kicking/spraying with a hose does nothing to deter a Pit Bull... you need to use a break stick. If you don't own a Pit Bull, it's unlikely you HAVE a break stick... but many household objects can be used instead, like a plastic triangle tent stake or even a flat head screw driver. In case you ever have this happen again, which I hope you don't... here's what I mean - How to use a break stick - YouTube

I'm very glad your cat wasn't seriously injured, and I hope the owners contain their dogs properly from now on... though, that is doubtful since it sounds like they are quite irresponsible :( I definitely agree with the cattery theory - loose cats, in my opinion, are just asking to be predated by either loose dogs or wildlife.

Oh, poor Monkey--and poor you. Hope you both heal quickly and well, with absolutely no complications. And btw, I'd walk the vet bill over there immediately and demand a check right away. These neighbors don't sound like the most responsible people on earth.
