Keith hates to kill a snake, we had a bald python for years. He knows I am afraid of them and will remove them to the back of the property. But, If there is a venomous snake he will most likely kill it. With 4 dogs, and a grandchild, the potential for a snake bite would be very high.

So far we have been very fortunate not to have seen any venomous snakes, but we do have two king snakes that frequent the property which helps keep the venomous population down.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

As long as they remain friendly and not personal insults it can remain an open discussion.

I guess I should apologize for having a differing opinion of a majority here.
There is not need to apologize, but the simple fact is that it seemed like you and the others assumed it was killed for just being there which it wasnt, it was killed because it was a hazard to my and my dogs safety it was on the front porch as well as the neighborhood children which come over quite frequently now....I will kill any Copperhead snake that is on the porch or carport. If it was out in our backyard away from the house it would have been left alone........................

So I think it is best that we agree to disagree :D

It makes me physically ill to kill something. Heck, I even take spiders outside and turn them loose . . . BUT, I've lived in an area that had cottonmouths and now live in an area with copperheads and they are not only very poisonous, they are aggressive strikers, particularly in the early spring and during molting. No one who isn't an expert should be encouraged to handle them. Ever.

Watch out for nests.

And I do not care if you are outraged, because you dont have to do anything you dont want to do, but I'll be ****ed if you are going to make it out like I am a animal killer.. So go tell your stories to somebody that cares........:)

Again, this was NOT a thread about the ethical treatment of poisoness snakes, it was about mine and Chloe's safety........................................

What does that have to do with this thread if you have a problem with killing poisoness snakes start another thread
Thankyou for correcting me, I see your point exactly. My safety and my dogs safety is MUCH more important than the lives of animals.

From now on whenever ANY animal enters my yard (snakes, the neighbors dogs and cats, rabbits, ducks, squirels). Those animals WILL be shot on site. I do not know if any of the animals are carrying diseases or otherwise agressive, so it's the only reasonable thing to do.

Calling animal control to relocate the animals is not even a little bit rational. These animals are rabid for all I know and they could kill my dog twice in the 20 minutes it takes for animal control to arrive!!

Thankyou so much for addressing this terrible safety issue I've been ignoring for years. From now on there will be no hesitation, all strange animals in my yard will be executed IMEDIATLY.

If we called animal control to come out to remove snakes they'd laugh and hang up. I have a house right in the middle of the old part of the city, two blocks from the hospitals, and they wouldn't come out and trap a skunk! They were, however, more than willing to rent me a trap to catch it and transport it somewhere else myself

Where do you live that animal control comes in 20 minutes? Must be right next door......

Your argument does not even make sense. If a rabbit or a duck had venom that would kill, and it will bite, instead of run away, well then, I would say they should be killed. But since they DO NOT, well, no argument. ;)

My mother had a copperhead removed from her yard just last month when she found it while gardening. Animal control has to remove any animal that is a safety issue no matter what. They WILL remove venomous snakes, they WILL NOT remove garter snakes. They won't remove skunks, beceause a nasty smell won't kill anyone.

And Jesse, just for me, next time there's a snake in your yard, bring the dog inside and call animal control. It will take 20 minuetes from your life, but noone has to die this way.

You've got an unusual animal control office then, Zeus. Ours won't do anything. There was a Doberman who was allowed to run at large and had even attacked one girl and refused to let another woman come out of her apartment to get to her car and animal control told us we'd have to trap the dog and hold it for them to come and get it - they wouldn't come until we had it contained. My skunk problem wasn't because of the smell, it was a skunk out in daylight - which is a red flag for rabies, especially in the middle of town in a neighborhood where quite a few people walk to work at the hospitals.

Tsk tsk. No need to shout. Reread my post. Animals like ducks, rabbits, etc do not strike and bite people or other animals unless cornered. Unlike a snake that will strike at something crossing its path.

And yes, you have a very unusual AC. It took 3 days for them to come to a home that I called about that had a dog chained up, starved almost to death.

If I called animal control where I lived they would probably laugh at me and tell me to kill the snake myself.

It took them 4 hours to get here when Roxie was attacked by the three dogs.

Now if I find a gator in my pond, they will come out and remove it...hopefully I won't have that happen.

You obviously know nothing about snakes. They will only strike as a last resort. They are more afraid of us than we are of them. If you leave a snake alone it will most likely go away. Hell most snakes are hesitant to strike after you've picked them up. The only dogs who get bitten by snakes are the territorial ones who wanna attack the snake beceause it's on their property.

I don't care what people may think - if it's my life/my dog's life/a kid's live vs. that of a poisonous snake that winds up in my backyard, I won't hesitate to kill the snake.
I've killed two rattlesnakes so far since living here, and a countless number of scorpions. The snakes could easily kill either one of my dogs, and the scorpion could kill my Papillon with ease. I won't risk it. Don't chastise Jess for taking measures to protect her dog.

And uh, I did call animal control once about a massive snake in my yard. They told me to kill it. *shrug*

Glad Chloe is okay, Jess!
