unexpectedly & entirely on her own she spotted & ran down a large male coon (about 18#). she was unsure how to handle it but enthusiastic, so i sent Sonic in. props to the coon, not the biggest but definetely the baddest ever. between the coon & Olive's inexperience causing her to get in the way, Sonic looks like he fought mike tyson. he's got a split in his nose, and cuts around his right eye. under the eye is pretty swollen (he had the coons chest, the coon grabbed his face & Olive grabbed the coon & pulled). i've got him pretty well patched up but i have to run to the feed store in the morning for some fresh penicillin. apparently he doesn't know how rough he looks. got home & let him out of the truck w/o a leash figuring he would be tired enough to just go in the house, nope he headed too the golf course to hunt. it took a surprising amount of calling him before he came in.
Olive came out of it w/a few small nicks. next one she will be on her own.

Those raccoons can be vicious fighters. Poor Sonic . . . that's why no one wants to hunt with the noob ;) Hope Olive learned a few things from the mistakes she made on her first one and can dispatch her next hunt without getting nailed.

That first kill can be pretty nerve wracking if you're watching your dog, hoping it doesn't get more than a few scratches.

Kharma was pretty comical when she got her first groundhog. She wasn't sure where she needed to bite it, so she just started biting and kept on until it quit fighting. Bimmer was standing by (he'd flushed it for her) just in case -- best teacher ever. It took her a few seconds, it put up a fight, but considering she was about five and a half months old she did pretty well, lol.

You'll never learn until you get to try it first hand, so I'm pretty sure she can handle the next one on her own. But eitherway, I'm pretty sure Sonic will have her back.

The story was very exciting, mostly because I don't have any experience about it at all. But my imagination saved me while reading though, so it was quite nice.

Kudos to the both of them! Coons are nasty little critters. I'm sure Olive will do great on her own next time. Keep us updated!

Good girl Olive! She'll get the hang of it soon enough.
Our dane girl Breez LOVES a good hunt, too bad she's stuck living with a non-hunting family, but I am going to try and find some lure coursing for her to do...

Hey at least she stayed tenacious and kept up! Well done!

We have a coon problem in the horse barn. I'm thinking about getting a couple terriers up there to get them! Buggers out-smarted 2 trap types (conventional type you buy at the store, and the 40 gallon barrel method). I want to set up a couple snares at their main entrances into the roof but the boarders don't want to see it get "hurt". Much easier to just let the terriers get the job done quick whilst the barn's closed and no one's the wiser of what happened.
