I'd love LOVE to go to the maritimes and spend months or years but it's just too expensive to move that far. I bet you love it.

Edit: I am really jealous actually. You'll be able to easily go to PEI Newfoundland... Montreal is gorgeous. <sigh> I'm so restless

Well, I live in Nova Scotia, and it's a great place. Where will you be? The people here are a little old fashioned and certainly layed back. What are you looking to find out about the place?

Oh, and yes, PEI is easily a drive away, but NFLD typically requires a plane ride as does Montreal unless you really want to go on a 13-16 hour car ride. But it can be done!

It's pretty great - and the neighbour to my Provice. Lots of agility trials, and great clubs.

I'll be in Truo at the Atlantic Horse Fair on the second weekend of May. If you're not too far from there, you should drop in. Lots of interesting booths will be set up! :)

I'll be staying near kentville or port williams, I'm not sure which. I was wondering about the climate, the economy, people etc. I saw dekka say in another post that the economy is not so good and I was wondering how so.

I've spent close to two months in NS over different times. Drove down and flown into Halifax both.

I loved Halifax, it's a great city with a lot of variety. It's small enough it makes it easy to get around, but big enough to have everything you need.

The majority of the time I was there I was about an hour from Antigonish, near a little town called Sherbrooke. The people were absolutely fantastic, and it's high on the list of places to return and visit again someday!

As far as the economy, with us being used to Ontario, there isn't nearly the manufacturing base there that we see here. Though it was a dozen years or so since we were there. (We were there together the one round, then after three weeks or so she flew back, while I stayed and drove back later.) Ask her about her flight back sometime......

I know there is work there, but it's of a different sort than what we are used to.I also suspect that some of it would be seasonal, and a lot of it also relies on resources in the areas that we were in such as logging, pulp and paper and the like.

We did notice at that time though, that real estate costs weren't as expensive as here, unless you were right 'downtown' in the major centres.

One of our members grew up and lived there, Yarmouth, until about 11 yrs ago. She and her husband still have family there, they go home all the time. She would also be a good one to ask, I'll tell her about this thread and I am sure she will reply.

She and I are leaving our kids and hubs home this summer, going on a road trip to the east coast. We are each taking a dog and also stopping to compete at an agility trial, we are really looking forward to it.

The climate here is overall pretty nice. It doesn't get too cold in the winters (compared to the rest of Canada-besides BC). The summers are warm, but rarely too hot. The ecomomy here isn't as great as some of the other places in Canada. Our fisheries have depleated and foresty is seasonal. But with that being said, there is always work to be found.

I love East Coasters, as people. We are friendly, hard working, and can have a good time! I live in Halifax, and it is a great little city. Small-yes, but like was already said, it has everything that you need. Halifax will be as easy drive from where you will be. The valley (where you will be) is beautiful!! I'm sure that you will like it there!

Nova Scotia is a very special place to me..... It is my heart and soul!!! I am a Bluenoser born and bred and very proud of it!!! The people are wonderful and mostly friendly, though sometimes when new people move in, rather than just touring it can take a bit for some to warm up, esp. if the new people are at all snotty... LOL

When Jeff and I were shopping for our first home, the one we ended up buying, we fell in love with when we went to see it... The real estate agent explained there was no key, the owner had lost it and never bothered to replace it.... There was money on the table with a note to the milkman with their order and to "Take what you need and leave the change" the milkman put your milk right in the fridge... We loved that place... When we came home from our honeymoon there was boxes of food and fresh pies on the table...

I was born in Musquodoboit Harbour and brought up from age 4 in Yarmouth. I go home an average of twice a year, often more... I miss it horribly and have not been able to get over that in 11 years!!!

The economy has been tough, but not unlivable in most cases.... If you are a hard worker, with some skills to offer you will do good... You will be in "The Valley" and the economy there is much better than my area. I have an Uncle in Paradise and he loves it there! We moved here for work opportunities and also because of elderly family needing help.... My hubby's story is a bit complicated, but his Mom basically moved to Ontario and married when young.... The marriage did not work out and while still pregnant she moved back to NS... so Hub was born and brought up in NS, however his Dad is from here in Ontario.

To get a good taste of NS, you must visit Lunenburg.... It is to me the best place to get a feel for most things NS... It has the Fisheries Museum, The Bluenose, and the homes from a time long gone.... You also should just tour around!! Peggy's Cove is great, but somewhat overrated in my opinion... There are gorgeous Lighthouses all over NS that simply don't get promoted or noticed.....

In my opinon, avoid the heavily promoted (Save for Lunenburg) and hit a backroad.... NS is a place that begs to be explored.....

A few pics from my hometown:

I am envious of your move.....

so pretty, and thanks for telling me about your experiences laura, I'll have to remember to post pictures here, I'll be taking lots of pictures, maybe everyday.

I think I may be going to the Atlantic horse clinic with Susan Fraser, the person I will be working for, but I'm not sure. She's one of the clinicians.
