I guess that would be what one might consider "recent" AMStaffer, LOL

A quick search shows that Presa's are dated back to the 15th and 16th centuries! They went nearly extinct and were carefully repopulated starting around 1970ish.........so I wouldn't consider them to be recent.

Source: Presa Canario History Brought to you by Crown Presa Canario

The other dogs you've listed are much younger as a breed.........but still at least 100 years old or more, so it all depends on what you consider "recent" LOL

I think I see/get your point though. These breeds started "somewhere" with the idea of someone...........but that someone should have 1/2 a brain, and resources, and be creating for a PURPOSE another dog cannot competently fill in this day and age of over population IMO. It was a far different world 100 years ago.............
Don't want to split hairs with you but the Presa we know today might have some distant connection to a dog from the 1600s but I think most sources will tell you the dog called the Presa today was a mixture of local dogs (Canary Islands) and "Sporting" dogs from Great Britian and Ireland. Even that verison was redone in the 1960s and 1970s. When you see words like "repopulation" that often includes the use of other breeds to bring them back.

Below is a quote from the Sanders Kennel, but I have seen this same information in several other places...

RECONSTRUCTION- THE CREATION OF A MODERN BREED

Reconstruction of the breed began in the early 1970's by various aficionados who sought to preserve the heritage of the Presa Canario. Throughout the next decade, breeders began searching for what they believed were the most traditional examples in temperament, courage, guard instinct, and aspect. Several breeds were used in the reconstruction by several breeders for various objectives. These breeds may have included the Bullterrier, the American Pit bull Terrier, the Great Dane, the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Fila Brasileiro, the American Bulldog, the English Bulldog, the Bullmastiff, the Spanish Mastiff, the Doberman, the Dogue de Bordeaux, the Spanish Alano and the Perro de Ganado Majorero. Clearly, the gene pool for the modern Presa Canario is quite extensive and can still produce atypical specimens of this nascent breed.

Good to know, makes sense to me :) I figured if they were nearly extinct, breeders would have to use some "creative" methods, LOL

But I still see it as a bit silly to create another breed if there is already a breed that fills the bill..............Like I said, this is a different world than it was 100 years ago, heck, even 40 years ago, with population of dogs out of control and so many being put down on a daily basis.

This thread got me thinking about designer dogs. Some designer breeds are just for looks. How about someone that is trying to breed a working dog.... like Swinford (John Swinford). Is a Kennel like Chimera Kennels - Home just a puppymill or is he pioneer to make a first rate working dog.

Aren't a lot of reconized breeds today like the Presa and the Dogo and even the APBT and GSD relatively recent creations?

Not sure on this one myself....just going to toss it out there for discussion.
Wow, talk about some EXTREMELY drivey dogs. I always imagined english mastiffs as lazy couch potatoes. But, boy, these dogs get down to business. I always love seeing a very young puppy take to a flirt pole like a pro.

They are (Bandogs) English Mastiffs with APBT and several other breeds. I have not seen a "recipe" of exactly what all has in his program.

Filas are far to agressive to be a family dog are reliable enough to have in the general public, presa canarios are fighting dogs and so are cane corso ,a dogo is a pack dog
boerbeols are mastiff and bulldogs used for predator protection they do not have the hunting ability of a hound nice try but none come close to fitting the bill
Where did you obtain your information? The book Made-up Breed Information For Dummies?

And I hope you have a lot of land and a reliable shotgun. Because you're going to be doing an awful lot of culling.

And with just 2 dogs, you're going to go down in the dictionary for the term "breeding dogs to death".

Honestly, I think someone got into the special brownies and chased it with Grandpa's cough syrup before typing with their 2 wittle fingers.

OP- I hope you realize that if you believe in the end of the world in your lifetime you are allready SOL for creating a new breed. As Im sure your aware it will take many generation and just FYI the world is suposed to end Dec 21, 2012, so you will have just F1s. Hmmm

The world isn't ending in 2012 just the end of and "age". The Great Cycle ends and a new one begins. 2012 (according to the Mayans) will be as much about a new beginning as it is about an ending.

The whole 2012 thing is a pet peeve of mine...sorry
