Hi guys,

Today we took the babies to the park and RB layed on a ant pile:yikes: they got him good :( we took of and pore some water on him wile we got home. At home we put some calamine lotion on him to sooth the itching.

I was amazed that he ddn't even move he just stood there wile the ants crawled on him:yikes:. Is there anything else I could do for hom to sooth him?

Here are some pics....... poor guy

I would definitely try some Benadryl. And since I had to call a nursing friend a couple of weeks ago after Meg found some ground hornets, I can tell you the dose is 1 mg per lb, 2x/day. And I can also tell you the pink coating stains if you dog spits the pill out on to your carpet, so dose with care!

I hope he feels better soon.

If that were my dog I'd probably take it to the vet... But that's just me.

That looks extremely uncomfortable. Some pain control might even be in order, even with the Benedryl. Also, I would watch very closely for any kind of allergic reaction. Theoretically it would have happened by now, but that's a lot of bites so I would just keep a close eye for 24 hours. Any change in mood/energy/appetite I'd maybe think about having him checked out.

Just my two cents!

Perla, I would recommend doing the Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) tablets over the cream. The dosage is 1-2 mg per pound of body weight 2 times a day. So a 75 lb dog would get 3 25-mg tablets twice a day. A 50 lb dog would get 2 25-mg tablets. But always round up if the dog's weight is in between. Underdosing won't do the dog any good.

And get a good oatmeal shampoo and give the dog a thorough bath while paying special attention to that area. Let the shampoo sit for 5 minutes (set a timer!) and then rinse until the water run-off is clear.......and then rinse for a minute or two after that. I would only bathe with lukewarm water at best as warm/hot water is only going increase blood flow to that area and you don't necessarily want that.

Good luck with it all!

I'm with Domestika on this, at least a phone call to the vet. I wouldn't take medical advice over the Internet with something like this. It is possible too, that besides the allergy aspect of this that this could lead to a secondary infection and the vet may prescribe anti-biotics as well. It looks very irritated and sore. I hope he heals up soon, poor baby.

Thanks guys it was kinda late by the time we got home yesterday. I call my vet today and he will go in at 3:00. will se what the Doc says. My poor baby. He is doing ok for now. Acting like always, I don't see him paying much attention to the area, but i know it must itch. I'm not going to work to day till 3:00 so I will keep a close eye on it.

Thanks again.

It might not itch. I don't know much about ants, but this might not necessarily be an allergen/antigen reaction. Those blister-like sores may be a direct result of the ant bites and not an immune response at all. (?) I really have no idea. It is strange that there's no licking, chewing or fussing with it. Anyhow, hope he heals up fast without any problems. Let us know.

poor guy. I'm glad he seen a vet.

I've been bitten by fire ants before and they do not itch.
