She is gorgeous. I had a Dutchie a few years back. I couldn't stand that dog (talk about a bad handler/dog match). But I have worked a couple of very nice Dutchies in PP and police work and one day will probably own another one. (Either that or a Mal. You're husband's Mal is very striking.)

Welcome Dutchie, your dog is gorgeous!

What kind of PP training are you doing with a pup? What foundation work, etc is being done as far as drive building, etc? I recently started doing some training like that with my GSD who is 2 1/2 yrs old.

Oh, Dutchie - Lizzie's beautiful! Her dark brindle is striking. And I love how attentive she is. If I hadn't stumbled onto Filas I would definitely have been considering a Dutchie at some point. Really lovely, intense dogs.

both dogs are gorgeous! I had the chance to get a young Dutchie last year, and I'm still kicking myself for not doing so, (having 4 other herding breeds another would have been a little much at the time).

I do have a question, since I have been looking at Mal's for my next breed, but I am also fascinated with Dutchies..Do you think they are similar ? Prefer one over the other and why?

I am not a stranger to high energy, demanding, challenging dogs, so spare no details *vbg*..
Thanks
Diane

Do you do "personal" protection or schutzhund? I know they are very different. I am going to be starting personal protection with Caiza in the next few months. The trainer I found is wonderful and has been doing protection and SR for over 20 years. I am very excited about it!
Personal protection. Fortunately, she was born with the drive for it, and intelligence to wait for the command to use it.

I never had to build her drive. I've had her since she was about three months old and in the second week, she was already biting the suit. She's seven months now and she's hanging on. She really fires up if the decoy grabs me, mimicking an attack. Not sure about all of the specifics of the method itself, or what Richling calls it (and I'm too tired for the "Richling Discussion" right now because it goes nowhere ...) I just know that my pup means business. :)

How drivey is she/how typical is her drive? As in, does she ever "stop" or does she want to keep going until exhaustion and requires intervention to keep from working to death?

ETA: In the context of "at home"

Both are high energy and possess great intelligence and drive, but my Dutch Shepherd is calm compared to my husband's Malinois. That dog doesn't have an "off" button. I am surprised he sleeps ... seriously. Don't get me wrong, my dog is alert at all times, she's just more coy about it. The Malinois is up in everyone's business all the time. Neither are aggressive and they play well with one another and our Rottie. I would say that the Malinois really needs to be with a one-dog owner simply because the dog needs to be doing something all of the time, and he has an incredible ball-drive.

At home, she'll play ball for hours, but she will start to wane after she's bored. It's not an issue of being tiresome, but boredom if things aren't mixed up a little. She likes her Kong and her Chuckit, but really just likes to steal the other dog's Kongs and be chased around.;) She would run around and play all day if she could. When working, she would literally track until she passed out.

LOL, she sounds a lot like my Aussie, at least in regards to stealing Kongs and wanting to be chased...he LIVES for a dog that will chase him!

I wish I could find a good SAR club around here, but I've heard enough people say some "interesting" things about the head of the one here that I'm not so keen to sign up.
