Hi, I'm considering the purchase of a puppy, and I've narrowed it down to two breeds, Min pins, and chihuahua's. I've researched both breeds extensively, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which dog would make a better companion in an apartment setting, most responsive to training, more intelligent and so on.

I've also had experience with larger dogs, a Dalmation and a Rottie, and was wondering if anyone could give me any insight on any drastic differences between large and small dogs.

Thankies.

Min PIns are hyper, and dirty as far as ever becoming house broken. They will poop and stomp thru it, etc. Chihuahuas are much calmer and sweeter for the most part. Get a Chiwaawaa.

But that's something I'm used to, My first dog (that I can remember) Was a Dalmation, she was hyper, jumped up on everything, wouldn't listen, was an absolute menace, but she was still an excellent dog, so hyper is something I'm used to, and I would like a dog that's small, that I can take out jogging with me, and have energy.

I was just saying that because from what I know in my experiences are that some people that want toy breeds do not want a very very hyper and active dog. there are some that want basically a lap dog. Again this is from my experience from people I knew that wanted or had toy breeds

:D Didnt know that, that was something you were used too. Alot of people aren't that why I wrote about my aunt's friends dog:D

I personally find most small breeds much more hyper than the larger breeds. But, I've never owned anything under 75#s.

I personally have 2 minpins and neither are "dirty" or hyper. They both love to cuddle and nap with me when ever I am ready! They do love their playtime and do have alot of energy, but are not overly energectic, imho.
I have never had a chi, but my brother did and it was the meanest thing I ever seen. But that was the only chi I have ever known.
I will always own a minpin. In my book they are the greatest small dog!!

min pins and chis are a lot alike. I think equally hyper and nutty. From what I have met the min pins less so.

Min pins are more hyper because they were bred to work. Chihuahuas are more layed back. I think chihuahuas are more stubborn.

You guys crack me up! LOL. Such generalizations. My bf has a min pin and that dog is the sweetest, non hyper little bundle of joy you could imagine. My Chi's are sweet too. If you give your dog plenty of exercise and some brain work, that will cut down on the "hyper." If you go to a reputable breeder who strives for correct temperament, that will help too. "Mean" dogs develop because of poor owner handling. So, to blame the breed is nonsensical. Sure, some breeds may be more high strung naturally than others and what they were bred for certainly has some bearing. Chi's were bred to be companions, that's it.

Another breed which I have seen several people own is a Shihtzu. Everyone I ever met was laid back and sweet....really nice dogs.

So much has to do with preparing yourself with how to best handle the dogs and I think whichever breed you decide on, if you do your homework, you'll end up with a lovely little pet.

Doberluv, I think you've answered the question really well. It's quite easy for people to generalise a breed, especially with having had no experience looking after/owning that particular breed.

Anyway, Ascara why not just look up the two breeds on the internet and just do a lot of research on their temperament and personality traits? In my personal experience, I own a Chihuahua who is very sweet, loves people (children included), is not usually hyper but LOVES going to the park and running around (she can outrun any person), loves to play with toys, loves pleasing people, however she has been a little harder to train than my other dog, but she's such an obedient dog, and very quiet too. Chihuahuas are prone to Patella luxation (the kneecaps slipping out of place).
