They are cute. Specially the poodle. Can I ask just out of curiosity (not to start anything) but why did you choose to get a golden poodle X? Did you get any health garauntees, were the parents health tested (ie. hips, elbows and such) done? I am just trying to understand the concept of these dogs when you can get a pure bred poodle (like you did) that has champion parents for just as much or less money that a doodle thing. This is strictly out of curiosity, not trying to bash you or anything.
I worked with a golden poodle X when I took my certified dog trainer course and she was a fairly smart dog, we did very well taking a 98% in this hard demanding course. But she did growl at new people, and so did the other golden poodle X, right from the very beginning. How is your's temperament wise?
If you want to PM me that's fine. Please no one flame me or the OP this is just to gain understanding of the 'doodle' concept as I am pure poodle person.

GD= Goldendoodle? lol. Shortcuts always confuse me. Anyways, they're really cute! Moses looks HUGE in that picture! Is he really that big? Especially if the poodle is a standard. How much does he weigh?

EDIT: Oh wait, the poodle is a puppy! lol my bad.

Why a GD...Here goes

First off, Moses is HUGE at 110 pounds and about 28 inches at the shoulder. The biggest GD the groomer, vet, or his breeder have seen to date. The vet decided it must be a throw back gene somewhere. His dad, a black standard weighing 56 pounds, his mother a light golden retriever, same color as him, weighed 65 pounds. Don't know. Believe me, he kept growing and growing..I was getting a little worried.

I wanted a poodle when I got Moses, but my husband didn't think they were enough "Dog" at the time. That was totally proven wrong, and now he was excited to get Sambo.

I found these dogs on accident searching for non shedding dogs that were not a poodle about 5 years ago before the "Craze", and in my opinion, overbreeding started. I had no idea they would catch on like they did. My GD was the first for both my vet and groomer. Now I see signs etc. Its a shame, and I would never contribute to this again, not because I don't love him, but I believe many are ending up in shelters due to misrepresentation about health and shedding. I am fortunate that my GD was tested in all areas and does not shed at all. I did not pay what they are asking now, but probably too much. I have explained my feelings on the goldendoodles.com site and been just bashed.

I love him, but he will be the only one for me.

I've noticed that as a whole, GD's seem to grow to be bigger than the sum of their parts...I haven't a clue as to why this is, but I see so many GD's that are upper 80's to 100's without being overweight. Just freaking huge dogs.

The other 'doodle' in the dog trainer's course was also massive. standing more at great dane height than poodle height.
Thanks for your reply, it's interesting to see what other's thoughts are on it.

They are both cute, but your standard takes my vote. I might be more biased towards the standards though. :D

It is interesting that they get that large considering their mix.

Mindy, just curious. You said you see "signs". Could you elaborate some?

He's cute, but your poodle is awesomely beautiful.

Signs

Sorry,

I just meant that there are actual signs, that are sticking in yards, such as for sale signs, stating they are raising Goldendoodles and Labradoodles etc. They are also in the newspapers all the time, and you know the parents are not high quality and tested for the price they are asking sometimes. You know that people would not be breeding these if they felt there was not a market for them. There are also people who asking rediculous prices for these dogs as well, considering there is no breed standard, and they all come out with different attributes.

When I got my dog, I had to be on a waiting list for 5 months before I could even pick him out. I actually was bumped to another litter, then I had to drive to Canada to get him. I live in Michigan, that is where they originated, other than Austraila. Now, they are on the goldendoodles.com site always advertising their litters because there are so many of them. Labradoodles tend to shed anyway, and I don't think buyers understand that. Sometimes GD's do too if they take the retreiver parent.

I had no idea they would become what they are now. I guess what I find "kinda pointless" to do backcrosses etc. They have 3/4 poodle by that point. Why not just get a standard poodle? The breeders who are in it to better the breed WILL NOT knowingly sell their poodles to be mixed with other breeds. I don't blame them.
I love my GD, but like I said, if I ever get another mix, I will rescue it.

:)

Everybody's got to learn. I also got a couple puppies from backyard breeders (friends of the family back then) My last puppy (a mini poodle) was from a reputable show breeder but under strange circumstances as the breeder got very sick and had to send the litter to his co breeder (who I worked with) so I never met the breeder. I am getting (hopefully) a standard poodle next year and I had the breeder picked out in like may of this year. She is in the next province over but amazingly I was over there anyways doing school work when I was researching breeders so I got to meet her and several of her dogs (she was getting their eyes tested that day to clear them to breed) . I feel very confident in this breeder but I made mistakes with other puppies along the way.

Yeah, I knew a labradoodle that was 90+ lbs as a young dog too. I seriously thought he was part pyr or something at first. I wonder why they get so huge?

Anyways, they're both gorgeous!
