Sorry, didn't mean to be a thread killer.

Back on topic. How many lies do any of you tolerate from an individual before calling them on it, or dump them as a friend, etc?

I think for me that depends on the person, the type of lie, and their reason for it. Were they attempting to protect my feelings? Was it to save their own face (or other parts) Was it to make themselves look like a big person? It all depends.

I don't "dump" them. I can still be "friendly" maybe not "friends. I can tell you that once I have discovered your word isn't good I no longer pay attention or put any stock in what you say. Once you reach that status you are pretty much on "ignore" in my head forever, no coming back from it LOL

And I only "call them on it" if it's reached the ridiculous point...........otherwise, my mental ignore feature works pretty good :D

To me there are many types of lies . Those to cover up and those to boost one's ego . To me both are wrong and will come back and bite you in the butt ! White lies are completely different .

lies are lies are lies..

there is no difference to me..

if someone is willing to tell me a "white lie" they would be willing to lie to me about everything..

so NO, one lie isnt better than any other lie

IMO

I think lots of white lies are ok. If a person is down, and wants to hear one thing but you feel a different way... do you kick them when they are down? No. I don't think many people would at all. Those kinds of people that are lying to protect a loved ones feelings are completely different then those that are lying to make themselves look good, etc.

Jess , if you posted a picture of yourself in a new outfit you loved and I thought it was hideous , would you rather I tell you I thought it was ugly or just say that the color looked good on you ??

Same with babies... awwww look at how small it's EARS are... and so on. Babies generally do have some cute factor, even if it's the clothes they are wearing.
But isn't that still being deceptive? If someone asks you "Isn't he/she cute?" and you basically avoid answering the question? To me that still falls in the "white lie" category because you are diverting their attention instead of actually telling them how you feel about Frankenbaby.

But your quote reminded me of a sitcom I was watching where a character had just had his hair done and asked his friend how he liked it . . .

First guy: So what do you think?

Second guy: Great, your ears have never looked better.

The whole cute baby scenario has one big flaw: "cute" is subjective. It's neither truthful nor deceptive, just a personal perception and has no validity pertaining to the question of truth.

Facts can be truth or not. There are some Great Truths in life - and some Great Lies, but most of the things we get bent out of shape over are subjective or relative or merely opinion.

No, it's not lying, it's just finding something positive to say that you actually mean.

Exactly.

Cute is in the eye of the beholder. If someone asks if their child is cute, while I may not believe that they are, that has nothing to do with truth--it's opinion.

When it comes to honesty i think there are two things that must be remembered--

1) there is something called "tact." Let's say your kid did poorly in a sporting event that he loves. You could tell him that he looked like crap out there and that you doubt he'll get anywhere with the sport or you could point out something positive and suggest areas in which he could work harder. Both are the truth, but how they will be processed by the kid is very different.

2) On lying by omission--Not everything is the business of everyone else. I am a very private person and there are many things I don't share with friends, even close ones. Some might consider that "lying by omission," but I consider it preserving my privacy. My life is not an open book and my version of honesty does not involve telling others my business just because they want to know.....
