I'd love to get a English Bulldog - I always wanted one, but can't afford to buy one, they are sky high where I live (maybe everywhere???)

I was told to contact rescue's to try and adopt one, but they never seem to have any of them. anyone have any other suggestions?

(note: Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this type of question?)

I know that in Missouri and S.C. English Bulldogs run between $800 and $1500. You do know that the E.B. isn't exactly the healthiest breed or easiest to take care of (with all the folds and breathing issues)? Check on petfinder.com and see if they have any E.B. or E.B. mixes that you could adopt.

How expensive is "too" expensive?

have you done research on the breed, of what possible health issues they could have?

What would you be planning on doing with an English Bulldog?

They are cute little dogs and are hilarious to listen to lol

In my neck of the woods, they run anywhere from $1000 to $2000........... I'd like to get one for $200-$300 max (obviously less would be better)

I've heard they have serious health issues, but he would be an inside dog - and I would expect him to live in harmony with my mini dox. Watch tv, smoke cigars (well, I'd do the smoking - he'd be my buddy while I smoked).

EB's are one of those dogs I've ALWAYS wanted............. I may not know what I'm getting myself into, but I'd like to try :D

If you smoke, it will be very hard on an English Bulldog. (Or anything that breathes, lol!) They can be very expensive dogs to maintain, and the less a pup costs you on the front end, the more likely it's going to cost you in health problems generally. There's no guarantee that an expensive dog is going to be healthier, though, unless you've done an excellent job researching breeders . . .

Rescues are definantly there

But this breed is an expensive dog to have because you will most likely go to the vet more than many other breeds.

Also cheaper at point of sale does not always translate in to cheaper.... if you buy one from a BYB for $200 you might spend $5000 in vet bills.

Many good quality breeders who raise healthy (body and mind) dogs charge more for the quality and to weed out people who can't afford to take good care of their puppies. There are also people who are BYB and try to disguise themselves as quality breeders....so beware.

Is the 200-300 dollar cap because you choose not to pay more or is it because you simply can't come up with more money? If it is the latter then I highly recommend you go to a shelter and by a very healthy mutt with a big gene pool.

$200 or $300 max is all you can spend! Wow, you won't find a reputable E.B. breeder anywhere that cheap. Especially one that does health testing and such.
Smoking will be very, very difficult on an E.B. You might want to rethink the breed you want since you can't afford a healthily bred, good quality breeder. I'd try adoption in your case...JMO :)

Now you know why I never got one. The only idea I can give you is get a second job for a while and save up. But you could get at least 2 dogs for the price of the bulldog. Another alternative is to get another type of bulldog than the english. I've seen american ones that are affordable though they are not the same.

Totally Jules! I fell in love with Droopy, too! =x

There are always lots of dogs, of just about every breed, in rescue. With Bulldogs being a favorite of crappy money-grubbing breeders, you bet there are lots in rescue! Just think about it for a while... an adoption fee is only about $200-300, but what additional health costs might you expect from an EB?

My brother-in-law has a wonderful EB named Benny, from a good breeder, who they bought for $1500. So far... I'm not sure how many thousands of dollars they have spent on his health problems, which are just inherent in this poor breed. Laser Surgery on his soft patella = $200; Treatment for kennel cough, which he has picked up TWICE from who-knows-where despite being fully vaccinated = $500 and almost dying from it; Knee corrections = $1000+; Swallowing a Nylabone whole = $500; cleaning infections in folds of skin = many many vet visits and antibiotics, probably well over $200. And the list goes on ;0) this is one of the most accident & injury-prone breeds in existence. Maybe consider rescuing a friendly, easy-going adult Pit Bull/American Bulldog/Bull Terrier?

Also, a few reasons that a quality EB costs so much? The parents will need extensive health tests! The Mom will almost always require a C-section, which costs into the $1000's. Add onto that a stud fee of $1000. Natural breeding rarely takes place, so artificial insemination must be done, which costs much more than the normal stud fee. Puppy care of about $300 each. And, with the small litters these dogs often produce, it is hard for a good breeder to cut even after charging $1000-2000 per puppy.

VERY good point :)

By buying on it is also supporting a breed which has been changed so far it can barely live, let alone carry out the job it was originally intended for.

If you must have one, I'd go to a breed rescue.

Don't get me wrong, I love the dogs, I hate what they have become, and even more so, the people for doing it :(

Why not look into a American Bulldog or Alahapa Blue Blood Bulldog or Olde English Bulldog.I am in Canada and registered American Bulldogs from a good breeder go for around $600 so you might find a retired show Dog for around your price range.

All this talk about bulldogs made me want one. I was going to get a red doberman next but I think I will get an american bulldog next and after that the dobe. I never had an american bulldog before. Can anyone tell me anything I should know about their personality or health issues? They look like good strong dogs. How are they compared to a rottweiler or german shepherd? Are they smart or are they hard to train?

If you can't spend more than 200-300 bux on a dog, then how will you pay vet bills if something comes up all of a sudden? Its expensive to spay and neuter as well (at least around here it is)...licensing costs money, basics like bedding, food (good quality food!) costs money....

Did you think about all of that? Buying the dog is the first step, but you need to research and think about the rest of the path to owning the dog.
