I've seen one book boasting over 500 breeds. Don't know how accurate that is, since I didn't buy it. One of the books I've read has over 400.

The AKC alone recognizes over 150 breeds. I think the FCI has about 300 breeds??? I have a bunch of books that have 400-500 breeds as well, but some of those breeds are extinct or mixes like the "Caca-poo" and "Lab-or-doodle". You'd really have to define what you consider to be a purebred dog to get a rough idea of how many true dog breeds there are out there.

FCI has 335 which has all the breeds AKC has .

But UKC has 166 some that both AKC and FCI dont have.

Such as Kangal, Akbash, American bulldog and hunting hounds, Chinook.

Other breeds not accepted by FCI yet is the Boerbel, and about 10 new or very rare LGD breeds.

I dont count any of the DOODLES_ yet the Lab-doodle is on the way down under -on becoming a self producing Pure bred . ( so ive heard).

So my guess would be just under 400 for breeds still in existance today or currently under development like the US Shiloh & King shepherd.

The Alapaha isn't recognized by the AKC, UKC, FCI or even the CKC! Mostly because the originator, and those carrying on the breed, want to see the dogs continued to be worked and not turned into just a conformation dog. They are picky and choosy as to who even gets the dogs. It's a pretty tight circle when it comes to letting dogs go. I'm not sure if they'll ever be recognized though it would be nice if they would be by the UKC so that I could compete in something . . .

Sis, what did you want to do? You can do things like weight pull and agility without her being reg'd. You might already know that, but I figured I'd mention it just in case you didn't.

Yup that's the same thing going on with Alaskan Huskies. People want to get the "breed" registered for some reason but not only is it **** near impossible (because there is no set type or standard for an Alaskan Husky since they dont care what it looks like so long as it gets the job done and the outcrosses to other breeds are always being made) but as soon as that happens you are going to start getting "show dog" breeders which mushers do not want at all.

I do not believe the Dogue Brasiliero is recognized by the UKC, FCI, AKC or CKC...

Yeah, I know I can work with some organizations with her, but unfortunately most of the competitions around here are AKC or UKC events . . . so not for us.
