I know that all of the Caribbean has a ton of stray dogs that just wander around. St Maarten has strays that look pretty similar. They live off of the leftovers that the people cooking at the Lolos give them. At dinner time, if you go down to where they cook, you can find a bunch of dogs waiting around for ribs.

I fell in love with a few dogs like that when Mike and I were in Saint Martin too Laurelin. They had owners who lived a block from our resort but they were let out every morning and went home at night. Each morning they came to our beach and visited with the guests then we'd see them in town later in the day and again in the evening hanging around the restaurant next to our beach. They were just so lovely and sweet, I couldn't imagine how their owners allowed it but they had done it for years...same routine every day.

I so wanted to take them home. They always stayed together and it was obvious that they were healthy, happy and very well known.

The islands in the caribbean are full of stray dogs and other animals. It always broke my heart to see them wandering, skinny and sick and searching for food. My dream has always been to retire and travel the islands and try to set up vaccine, spay/neuter centers...maybe someday....

The majority of the dogs around there are sort of half-owned in a sense. There are certain people or groups of people that feed them all the time, and they know who do, but they basically wander. The lolos at Grand Case were like a safe haven for some of the more feral dogs. There was a bitch that had to have just had puppies that was always there getting the leftovers every night. I was always surprised because all the dogs were pretty friendly for being 'homeless'. They also let the goats wander everywhere too.

Just curious were you on the French or Dutch side of St Maarten? (Not that it's a huge island or anything lol)

It would be really nice to do some sort of spay/neuter program there. It's definitely needed.

The dogs are very friendly because people are generally very friendly to them and they have figured out that being friendly results in them getting treats from tourists also.
Some of those places tell you not to feed the dogs or you will have a new friend following you around everywhere you go.

We stayed on the Dutch side and were only there for 1 week. It was part of a 3 week trip to a bunch of different places. I don't think we'd ever go back, it wasn't my favorite place.:)

My friend who does rescue has brought a few dogs up from the islands. One of them came home in a crate under her plane seat after a vacation, of course;) . A few others have been transfers from other rescues. It is very hard to find young, short haired, small to medium sized dogs in rescue in our area, and that is what everyone seems to want. Most of the dogs coming from the islands fit that description perfectly.

Very interesting and sad. Very cute little pups. Do I detect a hankering from you Doc, to make a trip with an extra passenger on the return trip? LOL. They would be hard to resist, especially in person.
