From another thread:

Also, Geocaching = win.
I know there are a few here that have tried it, or at least thought about it. I've discussed it with some chazzers before, but it's a difficult thing to explain.

What is geocaching?

In it's simplest form, it's using a GPS to locate a 'hidden' object or container.

However, it's kind of like trying to explain something much more complex. Let's use golf as an example...."You use a stick to hit a little white ball, walking around after it, and trying to get it into a hole in the ground." Sure, that's golf in it's simplest form, but does it sound like a sport that would be played and followed by millions?

I've been caching for about 2 1/2 years, who else has tried it, or knows about it, or is even just curious about it?

I've found a few and walked in circles in the woods for hours trying to find a few. It's fun. Haven't gone in a couple of years, though.

Ottawa? Hundreds. There's over 15,000 in Ontario now that are active.

I'm curious ....

don't have a clue what it REALLY is
It's pretty easy. Someone goes into the woods, city, mountains, wherever, (the geo part) and hides a box or container or something and stick some things in it (thus the cache part). Then they go online and report where they hid it via GPS coordinates (BTW you need a GPS unit to do this).

Then you go looking online for a cache near you and that you think would be interesting. You get the coordinates then go out to that spot and try to find the cache. If you find it, you take one thing and put in something else. Generally people report back as well to verify the existence for others.

Find all sorts of neat stuff in them. When I was at college a friend of mine owned one of those old Polaroid automatic developer cameras so she'd bring that and we'd take pictures of our group and leave a little message on the back and stick those in. Good way to meet new people too! (Hey...you look strangely familiar...)

Also some of them are just short jaunts in the wood, while others may require climbing equipment (they specify if you need anything special usually). Some people go all out lol.

My husband and I learned about it from some friends earlier this year. Every once in a while we will get together and geocache in a group.

My interest in it comes and goes. I enjoy it when I'm participating, but it's not always something that I think to do.

I don't know if that makes sense. Lol!

Geocaching with your dog - Dog Caching

There is a great site for geocaching with your dog. All caches must be in dog friendly locations such as dog parks, conservation lands, beaches, and trails. Local businesses that are dog friendly can be caches as well if they offer a treat or toy to "cachers" that come to their business. Other businesses list in the directory and are paired with caches in their area. Dog lovers can spend an afternoon searching for a cache and then go get a bite to eat or a treat for their dog at a local place. The site is Paws Awhile Online Community at Home and they have lots of information for first time cachers as well.
