What kind of fish does your dog eat? I'm thinking about going raw again in the next month or two. Nanook always gets sick when she eats salmon. She's really picky about fish. I'd like her to have it once a week. Is there a kind that dogs tend to love?

To be honest I never fed a lot of fish. I tried her with trout, and a rock bass once, but she didn't seem to know what to do with something that size with scales, and wasn't very enthused about the whole ordeal.

Sierra got her EFA's and Omega's through oils and the occasional canned fish (jack mackeral or sardines) mixed in with whatever raw mush I had put together.

I picked up a bag of frozen whole tiny mackerels I think. Threw them into a ziplock and can pull out one at a time. My guys don't go crazy for it though.. and both are pretty raw obsessed for anything these days..

I also buy the little mackeral. Pit loves it, but then again he loves his plain anti-inflammatory pills too, so that's not saying very much.

Cooked (canned) salmon, mackerel, sardines. Have tried catfish and they stuck their noses up at that. They get salmon oil, though, so I'm not too worried about their fish intake.

It's a testament to how much I love my dog that he gets any fish, because I really, really don't like it.

Anyway, Bailey get canned fish (I cook his food otherwise, though -- he doesn't get raw) -- sardines, pink salmon, etc. He gobbles it up, and it sure is easy to feed (no worries about calcium or anything). He gets fish oil pills otherwise, which he usually eats readily (which is also good, because once when I pierced one with a knife, it squirted all over my face, much to my extreme horror, lol).

My mom just bought him some frozen tilapia filets, though, so we'll see how that goes. I should have made her keep them and feed them to him at her house. :)

I prefer to feed raw fish whole. My SO usually catches them fresh. I told him no catfish as they are bottom feeders and they will eat trash. I don't feel like cleaning a fish for my dogs to eat, so I don't feed any bottom feeders. I haven't found my dogs to be picky, so whatever Harley brings home, they eat.

I will mix canned mackerel or salmon into the regular dog food if I'm feeding that.

Pacific raw salmon isn't but you can freeze for a long time. I can't remember the exact rule but we would freeze ours for over a month at the bottom of the freezer on the coldest setting.

I just started my dogs on a raw diet in April and introduced fish a couple of weeks ago. I was advised by someone that has fed his dogs raw for a long time that canned mackerel was okay to give them so that's what I did. They scarf it down, so I guess that means they like it. :)

Be aware of the pretty high salt/sodium content of canned fish, especially if you plan to feed it very often.

I give canned mackerel/salmon/tuna to my dogs once in awhile, but not on a regular basis due to sodium.

Do you worry about mercury, too? I just bought Bales a ton of mackeral/pink salmon/sardines. It's so easy to give to him for "lunch" at doggie daycare but I do plan on limiting it.

In all honesty I have never thought about the mercury levels because I don't do canned all that much because of the sodium. It's something else I will be reading about out of curiosity now though.........thanks a lot! :lol-sign:

Charlotte loves mackerel, I buy them whole frozen at an Asian grocers and she eats everything but the heads, before they even thaw. She also loves salmon, especially cold smoked salmon that she gets only because it's going bad and I won't eat it. Fresh caught lake trout and bass is always a treat, but you do have to watch out for parasites with some of the fish you catch yourself.
