my puppy is kind of inactive and sluggish a majority of the day... would it be ok to feed her a small can of energy drinks/caffienated soda to boost her energy levels?

It'd be better to make sure she's healthy and getting enough energy from her food (just like with people it's better for them to eat vegetables etc than drink a lot of coffee). Has she been to the vet lately, how old is she, what are you feeding her, and how much are you feeding her?

I would not do that. Caffeine is very bad for dogs and I know too much could kill them, a small amount won't kill but it can't be good and may make your dog anxious. I would also make sure she is healthy. How old is she, what breed(s) is she, was she always like this? Some dogs are simply less energetic than others, some require the right game to enjoy exercise, she could be too old, or she could be ill. Also all the food questions asked before, Nutrition plays a big part in a dog's life. Just like if you ate a bunch of McDonalds every day you would loose energy so would a dog living on nasty food.

she is 2 years old, 60lb pitbull, she has seen a vet about a month ago for a checkup (said she was healthy) and had her yearly shots a month before that

i feed her ONCE a day due to my schedule... 2 bowls (= 4 cups) of Pedigree-Complete-Nutrition-Crunchy-Bites. before she would eat one bowl right away, save the second bowl for later, but now she usually eats all 2 bowls at once

i took advice from this article "One Meal Per-Day Keeps The Veterinarian Away"

im thinking of doing the twice a day thing, maybe to speed up her metabolism, but im too scared to make any abrupt changes yet

I would split the meal into two IF YOU CAN, but it is not essential. My dog ate one meal a day. I know with smaller dogs you need to feed more often but yours should be fine with one. I also don't like that food, Pedigree is not high nutrition and could be the problem. Some good foods are Canidae, Innova, Innova EVO, Orijen, California Natural, Timber Wolf Organics and Eagle Pack Holistic. If you google the food name and go to their websites most have a store locator to find a store near you. If you want to know more about dog nutrition check out the dog food section and this awesome website http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ and really look at the ingredients to avoid section and then see how many of those are in Pedigree. Good luck in your dog food search.

hmm thanks for the advice

yea Pedigree maybe the problem. I didnt realize it was that bad in terms of nutrition. i initially chose Pedigree due to its availability/convenience (its in almost every grocery market/petstore nearby) and its price... $18 for 44lbs. i guess i get what i pay for.

ill definitely consider Canidae or Innova. thanks again

no problem :D Canidae is the best price and is really good, Innova is awesome but can be a little pricey, you'll have to see what it is where you are. I know what you mean. We were feeding our dog Pedigree simply because that is what they sold in the grocery store 10 yrs. ago. When I came here I learned about good food and switched him to something better.

Good advice from Maxi. I agree...NO caffiene. I read it somewhere...can't recall where, but I think they said it was very toxic to dogs, just like alcohol, chocolate, grapes, onions and some other things. Our systems are not the same as theirs.

Did you ask your vet about the sluggishness? Did he do blood tests in the exam? Or just listen to her heart and look in her ears? I would want to make sure that the thyroid is normal and other things. That does seem odd for this age and type of dog. Some dogs just have personalities that are a little more laid back, but before you asume that, I'd get another vet opinion or just go through things again with your vet. Good luck.

It's hard to get worse nutrition than Pedigree, though I'm sure it is possible. Innova, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, and Blue Buffalo (which is sold in some Petsmarts) are good brands that have large breed puppy formulas, and Canidae is a good all life stages food.

Hi
I agree with everyone, a better quality diet is the ticket. Also caffine is the same as Chocolate, enough can harm your dog.
Power drinks (or energy drinks) often have very high % of caffine, much worse than coffee.
Human Sport Drinks is also not good for dogs, humans and horses sweat when the body needs to cool it's self down, therefore by drinking electrolytes BEFORE and DURING sweating benefits the body by replacing all those salts etc. Dogs don't sweat, giving them those kinds of products are of no benefit and can also harm them.

Good luck

Just curious about the circumstances surrounding this inactivity. I can tell you that with my dog, she will spend much of the day sleeping if I don't engage her in some sort of activity. If I take her out in the yard, she is more than happy to find a spot in the sun and bake her brains out. However, when I am working/exercising/training/playing with her daily, her energy level and interest in activity increases.

But I agree, lose the Pedigree and split it into two meals.

I would for sure look into a better food. Do you have a Costco Membership? They have the Kirkland Brand and it is pretty cheap and good quality.

The only fluid your dog needs is water, and that's all. And I support what everyone else has mentioned about Pedigree...I myself used to feed this food, and while nothing really awful resulted from it, my dogs have done SOOOO much better on Canidae. They have nicer coats and skin, have lost some a lot of unnecessary weight, and therefore have a lot more energy. It's an excellent food, and you'll find that your dog will eat quite a bit less, as it's more nutrient dense, so the cost will definitely balance out over time. I swear by it, and also treat them with the Canidae All Life Stages canned food a couple nights a week for a bit of variety.

Becky2fine I just wanted to add that aside from the caffeine, the sugar in those drinks is also not good for your dog.
Is it hot where you are? Sometimes doggies get sluggish if it is too hot for them.
