i have a 12 year old lhasa, that is a rescued dog, in the last three days he started coughing, sounded different from any cough, now her breathing is accelerated, she tries to throw up and nothing comes out, sometimes a litle salive, looks like at least, Ive took her to two vets, one prescribed temoup and doxy and pepcid ac (human med) little improvement, then thw second vet, dog said shadow was ok and i should stop pepcid ac, and to further assist, she could an xray for 340 bucks.. could it be heartworm???? should i get a heartworm med over the counter?unfortunately i cant afford 340 for an xray, im desperate.. please anyone out there have any idea??

This is not something you can just attempt to treat. Since you don't know what's wrong and it sounds like a possible blockage, you likely do need the xray. Trying to treat for HW is not something you do OTC.

It doesn't really sound like symptoms of heartworm. Usually those symptoms come about gradually rather than suddenly. I also don't think vomiting is a symptom of heartworm. Which isn't to say she DOESN'T have heartworms, if she's not on a preventative then she needs a heartworm test done every six months to catch it while it's still treatable.

When she vomits, is she vomiting up her food or just bile? Has anything changed in the past few days, before she started getting sick, like her food, activity level, etc.?

At 12 yrs old, it could be congestive heart failure or some sort of respiratory failure. Definitely need to see a vet for an exam, and really should get xrays ....

WHY HAVE YOU NOT TAKEN HER TO THE VET ASAP?

Why are you still posting on here? GET OFF THE COMPUTER AND TAKE YOUR DOG TO A VET.

If she needs to be PTS, she needs to be PTS. If it's curable, it's curable. But DO NOT prolong her misery and pain.

I am very sorry for your loss. It sounded like either congestive heart failure or just her body shutting down on it's own.

i am so sorry. Tragic for her, and a horrid experience for you. At least you were there with her and she died with someone who showed her love and compassion. (((((HUGS))) Let your daughter know that love in the end of life is just as important as love in the beginning. IT is a great gift that you gave this dog. Children understand more than people realize they can when it is explained that way.
