Wasn't sure where to post this - as it's house-care rather than dog-care!

When the vaccum cleaner / hoover won't do it -- what are your top tips please for getting dog hair out of carpet ??

Even using a "shedder" comb outside daily on doggie its still pretty bad !

Hmmmm... very interesting question you pose. I have heard the Dyson vaccuum is supposed to be really good. Or the Oreck, but I am assuming you are not in the market for a new vaccuum. My vaccuum does great with getting dog hair and cat hair up and I have a lot of it at my house, I love that vaccuum.

I will tell you I had a Hoover before this one and our Hoover did not get up ANY hair hardly at all (I gave it to my brother, he has no pets and shaves his head for baseball, so it was good for him). When I got mine that I have now (which right now I can't remember what kind I have, it is yellow and gray and bagless) I could see the difference immediately in my carpet the first time I used it. It picked up all of the hair my Hoover wouldn't and couldn't get. I will have to say that if you have carpet, it is worth it to buy a really good vaccuum. Not that Hoover does not have good ones, I just had a $70 Hoover and for Christmas my mom bought me a good one for around $200.00 one year. You can definently tell the difference in a good vaccuum and one that just gets you by. I used to have to get on the ground and use my hands to pull the hair into a big ball of fur on the ground and pick it up even after I vaccuumed with my old vaccuum. I love my new one, it works wonders, and you can use it on any type of floor, it has a non-carpet switch too.

That's me  !!!

A new vaccum is a possibility (more makes/model recommendations please....) but obviously if there is a "magic method" someone has I'd love to hear it!

I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel that does a good job picking up but I do have to clean out the tubes often as it clogs up...and the bag fills quickly !

If dog hair is concentrated in certain areas, you can use wet a washrag by just rubbing that area with it. This also works on bedspreads and the upholstery. I have two Shelties, and they keep me pretty busy. I also use a Kirby vacuum cleaner. :D

i bought a fairly inexpensive upright at sam's club..it is a bissell cleanview 2. I didn't know my dogs's shed so much! I love my little 80 dollar vacuum. It does an excellent job on dog hair. It has Turbo brushes that strip the short hair right out of the rugs.

I don't know if you'd have access to anything like this where you are, Bonster, but here you can usually pick up a used Kirby very inexpensively. It doesn't matter how old it is; the things last forever and a 40 year old Kirby picks up dog hair (and anything else) in carpet. If you're just a bit lucky you can even pick up one with all the attachments for less than $100.00.

I don't have alot of carpeting, but if I think my reg. vac isn't doing the job, I use my little shop vac. I have the floor attachments for it...WOW, does that baby have some power! I also brush both dogs daily prior to coming in...yet that hair flies everywhere. I just found dog hairs in the bathroom...and they don't even go in there.

the other day I had the shop vac out (also great for the wonderful mess my cat makes with litter...even with a covered box) and was just using the hose...Ham had to come see what I was doing, so I 'swept' it all over him. LOL He loved it..............now, that's a good way to get some dog hair!! :D

LOL! How cute Debi! Brady is scared of the vaccuum, but now he has gotten to the point where he is interested in it and he wants to site and watch me vaccuum.

Renee, you're right about those old Kirbys !! The only thing I didn't like was emptying the cloth bags (date me ?) One thing I suggest for couches, cars etc is using one of those rough sponges used to clean grills. Those suckers work !! I also have a dog attachment for the vaccuum, but Chip loves it so much it takes a lot of time !

Those cloth bags were still being used the last time I had a chance to look at a new model Kirby! They sure beat having to make sure you bought the right bags

I've got one from my (paternal) grandmother's house. I found out it's a very rare model, one of the first made after WWII - and it still works just fine! I've got another one I'd bought at a thrift store for $15.00.

Renee...good for you !! My only contact with them was through my husband's 75 yrs.old clothing business by his father. We had three stores and 3 Kirby's....all dated before WW2 !! They went with the business....probably at $10 at auction ! Wish I had one !!

You NEED a vacuum with a rotating brush to effectively pick up dog hair. Trust me...Boomer sheds soooooooooo much.Around 1 inch of hair accumulates in about a week time if I dont vacuum. Now we have hardwood floors and Swiffers are a dream. Just using regular paper towels works pretty well and I save the fancy papers for tougher jobs.

:) Thanks all - especially bubbatd- a dampened rough sponge from my local convience store with a hard side for cooker/grill cleaning actually works like magic on the bad/hard to get to bits - but I've got a fair bit of carpet to cover - so I guess I'll be looking at those models and seeing which - if any  - I can get out here. My current vaccum has had enough!
Thanks again!

I just bought this stuff and it seems to work really well. It is that arm and hammer pet fresh vaccume refresher stuff that you sprinkle on and vaccume up 10-15 min later. There is a new one out that helps to release the pet hair from the carpet. I don't know how in the world it works but it does. I bought it a regular grocery store so ... well hope that helps.

If you put a rubber glove over the head of a broom and sweep the carpet, the static from the glove will attract the hairs! Then you can just hoover them up!

If you are looking for a new vaccum I would recomend the Dyson Animal (the purple one). It's great, one of the best things my OH has bought me (so far). The only thing wrong with it is the amount of hair it picks up each time is a bit of a shock, made me realize how hairy my house must have been before LOL
