Just curious because I just got back from kickboxing and I'm actually looking for some new workout ideas. I live in an apartment with three very active guys so we all exercise like mad and eat everything thats not nailed down =). Right now im kickboxing and hiking almost everyday plus running with my roommates. The one thing I will not do even though i should is lift weights. I know i need to but I don't think there is a workout more boring on earth.

I'm an avid weightlifter, a competing powerlifter. If you think that weightlifting is boring, then you have never done it right. Just going thru the motions and not challenging yourself is boring. Setting and attaining goals, pushing yourself to your physical and mental limit, that is what makes weightlifting exciting.

No, she's right. Weightlifting is boring.

I don't work out perse. I could never get motivated to go "Ok I'm gonna go to the gym and lift this weight 50 times and run on that treadmill for an hour and...aww screw it".

I like active sports where you actually do stuff. Like tennis or racquet ball. You won't be buff but you do get trim/cut and that's good enough for me.

I know theres appeal because a lot of guys i know lift and they always try to make me go. But it just doesn't work for me maybe it's because it's to methodical i don't know. It's funny how everyone is different I have other friends who only play group sports. And for my roommate even if its gorgeous outside she prefers treadmills. While i'll run in the rain before i enter a gym =)

I do alot of hiking and mountain biking with the dogs over long distances. Usually 4-8 km, weather permitting of course, cant right now cause of the snow, but once it clears, off we go again lol.

Running and LOTS of stretching for me. I could lift, light weight, long reps, to build the kind of muscle that is good for a goalie, but I ain't getting paid to do it, so NAHHHHHHHHHHH! :) I'd rather go play the game.

Not trying to throw you under the bus DanL, but I think that unless it is like a hobby to a person (as opposed to just giving in to a need to stay in shape) it can be boring. I would think that is why by early February, just the regulars are still in the gym. :)

FWIW, I get bored sometimes playing hockey. When I play for a very good team and I don't get a lot of work, I get really bored. It sucks to go through the 45 minute ordeal of putting all the crap on, just to have to stand there and work on my cool for an hour. (Not that my cool needs any work of course... LOL)

I agree puck, it's not for everyone and thats why the gym empties out soon after new years. Actually, I have my own gym in my basement so I don't need to deal with the holiday toners anyway. I understand some people think it's boring but just wanted to give another viewpoint. To me, standing on an aerobic machine is boring. The disadvantage is, whenever someone needs a refrigerator, washer, or piano moved, they call me. The advantage is, I can move those things. :)

Glass, that's exactly what I'm talking about. You don't have to go to the gym and lift a weight 50 times. That would be boring to me too. What gets me going is pushing myself and trying to do better than the last workout. There is a certain degree of adrenaline rush when you are looking at a bar with over 500lbs on it, knowing you are going to step under it, put it on your back, squat down with it and stand up again.

Yeah, I have a hard time getting pants, especially anything dressy. I don't train for size, but even training to get strong, you end up getting bigger. It's not to fun to find a nice pair of pants that are supposed to have a pleated front and the pleats are gone when you pull them up, and they are like spandex around your legs. I find for work, stuff like relaxed fit Docker type pants are generally ok but anything like a suit, I need to have it tailored to fit.

I work out 5 times a week, I try to do 7 now.
There are no real nice tracks around here and I will not jog along the road...it just doesn't do it for me.

So I go the gym on base, since it's free and mostly use the treadmill and the ellyptical. I should do some weights....but I don't know. I honestly feel a little bit weird between all the Marines :) It's funny though how a lot of them put so much weight on their machines that they moan through the whole gym and you think their head or something is about to pop soon :p

I used to play a lot of icehockey, too...like 4 times a week when I lived in D.C. Being a goalie, too, when my D mostly screwed up, I got a good workout out of that most of the times. Man, I miss playing hockey :(
But you're right Puck, it can be quite lonesome back there at times.

Jules... A good goalie never blames the D. Good thing I am not a good goalie. :)

Do you still have your gear?

Hmm....I'll continue to get my adrenaline rushes through other means. Everytime I see a motorcycle I get that tinge of a craving to be out there riding then the slight euphoria of a rush when I visualize myself on one. And, eventually, I'll have that rush again when I can afford one or someone lets me ride theirs (doesn't happen too often).

I'll stick to that, it's a lot safer. At least I won't be dropping weights on my toes, chest, neck, head, or whatever other body part happens to get in the way.

Somehow I don't think that weightlifting is more dangerous than riding a motorcycle at a high rate of speed!

Motorcycles are a lot of fun my roommate and the guy i used to date both ride. But personally for an adrenaline rush I'll take rockclimbing any day over sheer speed. Hockey is one of teh few sports i've never tried being born in a desert isn't conducive to ice sports. I always wanted to try and ice skate though

I love going to the gym and lifting, it is the cardio that I have a hard time getting motivated for.

Hehehe...well, yes, if an opponent basically has the time and space to tie a big red bow around the puck before he shoots..hell yes I'll blame the D :)
But the good thing about being the only girl (and I believe the youngest one, too) on a team has advantages: my guys always looked out for me. And they needed to, because I wouldn't let the opponents screw with me, I bet one or the other can still remember some black and blue marks he got from my stick :)

Yes, I still have all my gear. It's still unwashed and stinky in the attic. I could never ever get rid of it. I'm sure we're not going to stay in the south for our entire life...so at some point I wanna get back between the pipes. How often do you play?

Baw anna, it's not about the speed. Any monkey can open teh throttle up on a motorcycle.

It's about going into loads of turns and dropping your bike to a 45' angle and the stomach drop (think going down a drop on a roller coaster) every time you do so.

Going fast is fun, but turning is a lot more fun IMO.

You could learn to put on a bunch of expensive stuff and have people shoot frozen rubber at your head....
I didn't catch that. Unless a puck is rubber and you're referring to yourself.

I always thought a puck was like, stiff though. Like a metal or something.

Nope. It's vulcanized (sp..) rubber. Might as well be made of metal, though. getting hit in the head with a puck is like getting hit in the head with a nice thick piece of steel.
