There was once a dog in at work that looked just like an American Bulldog (pure or not, I don't know). She was big, buff, block headed, solid black saddle, white points, ice blue eyes, smooth coat. The breed she was listed as? A Collie mix.

Uh huh. She totally looked like Lassie, let me tell you.

Then today at agility. It was me and Mia, a malinois, a corgi (CP should come to my class :p)
Sounds like a great combination of dogs. :)

I did once see a dog that I would have sworn was either a WheatenX or a badly bred Wheaten. When I asked the owner, I was informed that it was a purebred Tibetan Terrier. A bit on the oversized end of things...

I have a friend who says she has a JRT, I personally think he looks like a Rat terrier or a very very very badly bred JRT like really badly bred :), She was very offended when I said he looked like a rat terrier, but if you put Carrie's Dekka and my friends JRT side by side its like night and day.

A coworker of mine recently adopted a dachshund x yorkie.... that looks like a piebald dachshund. I see no yorkie in there whatsoever. Huh.

Ozzy get's ACD all the time. WHY people know what an ACD is but not an Australian Shepherd is is BEYOND me.

Enzo gets "Puppy Lab" all the time. No folks, she's almost three, she's just not getting any bigger.

See if you guys can guess what breed my Charlie was.

i used to know a dog who was clearly an elkhound but the owners were adamant that the dog was a keeshond. they *always* get keeshonds.
Haha, I once mistook an Elkhound for a Keeshond. He was very fat, and I mistook that fat for coat. :p

There is a woman who adopted a dog from FOHA who I swear is a pure rhodesian ridgeback with no ridge, and she's been told by many people how ridgeback that dog looks, but she INSISTS he's a "pit bull mix". ARG.

Oh and CharlieDog, I will guess that dog has some sort of hound in him, with some husky perhaps?

I'll give you guys a hint, both parents were/are purebred representatives of their breeds, and both were nice dogs conformation wise, you'd be able to tell what they were by looking at them, no funky looking characteristics.

I met a rare blue merle German Shepherd once .... with tipped ears no less .... I really had to bite my tongue on that one. (Clients at the vet's office - they don't take kindly to being corrected by the staff). ;)

Ugh, tell me about it! My purebred, registered Australian Cattle Dog gets Australian Shepherd all the time. And my dad got told that her breeder "has dogs like yours!" when he had his Aussie, so I guess it goes both ways.

I'm wondering if it's less common that people get the appearances of the two breeds mixed up but rather get the names mixed up - they are, after all, both "Australian ______" medium sized herding breeds that both come in "blueish" and "reddish" (trying to think how a non-dog person would, LOL). But it is very frustrating when they interchange the two, especially since they are SO different not only in looks but in temperament and disposition.

I guess I just can't understand how a typical cattle dog's coat looks merle. Especially when the people telling you that have ACD's or Aussies

With Traveler I can see thinking he's an ACD more because he's smooth, prick eared and full body merle but an Aussie look like an ACD? Long hair, no tail and not typically completley pricked ears. They look nothing alike

No actually. I am good at guessing breeds and mixes and I've yet to encounter anything too insane. I once guessed dalmationxchihuahua cross though and was right. Booyeah.

Sheltie x Dalmation ... :p
You mean DalmatiAn? (tion is an action suffix, tan/tian denotes a National/belief suffix; ChristIAN, AmericAN, SicilIAN etc):p
/end nitpick

Since Saga isn't huge, she has often been mistaken for a MinPin/Dobe mix. Um Ok, she is 53 pounds, which yes, IS on the small side for Dobes, but um HI, she is still within standard for height.

Most people think that Hutch is a mix because he is a smooth coated Saint. But the one I couldn't get over was a woman the other day asking me what Seagle the beagle was mixed with. Ummm, nothing, he's a pure bred beagle. Then the woman proceded to tell me that she hoped I hadn't payed any money for me because he was mix breed. I didn't even bother, not because he's mine but because it is plain ridiculous---Seagle looks ALL beagle!

I was told mine is a border collie/ dane mix, but dunno. Sometimes I say pit bull/BC. But he is a big boy. When I see a pure pit, the face is different.

So I"m not sure. I know I have a cute mutt. He's definately got some BC in him cause he herds our feet.
