Nobody really makes fun of me about dogs, but I think it's because it's my career, and has been my dream since I was little. People talk about their jobs, I talk about my dogs, it's not all that different.
It does help that most of my friends and people I come into contact with are crazier about their dogs than I am.
But I do tone it down when I talk to non-dog people. Instead of things like, "Keegan and I went to the park and he had the best time meeting people and dogs etc." (which is the real reason why I go to the park), I might say, "I went to the park to jog, and took Keegan for exercise too," which is the secondary reason why I go to the park, but makes more sense to non-dog people.
I'm not good in social situations, anyway - small talk is the devil - but I've come up with ways to get by..... Like thinking of a few topics that I can talk about that are interesting. So when I'm going to be around a bunch of non-dog people, I just think ahead of time about some non-dog topics, which make me sound more interesting and well-rounded.
