 people are like that. A Newfie's size alone is intimidating to a lot of people, though. I'd say don't worry about it. You can teach your newfie "quite" or something similar, but it won't change how dumb people can be! lol!

I was walking my GSD last Friday, and she started barking pretty loudly. It turns out, the people down the road had their dogs off leash again  Missy has played with those dogs in the past, but she was so worked up about them charging at us, and anticipating a pretty tense meet up she was barking pretty intensely for them to keep away. The owner came out of the house quickly and screamed at their dogs to come back. In between the frantic calls of "COME! COME!" in which the dogs were ignoring, she called to the guy of the house "Hurry and come help me! That other dog's viscous!" yea... vicous... (LOL :D) Keep the dogs on a leash and my dog wouldn't have barked at them...

For me, any animal that size which is not a grass eater is worth being careful around. There is a couple who walks a pair of Newfies down around our Marina. They are always walking on short tight leashes. I swear the owners look more frightened than the rest of us pedestrians. Makes me wonder. I give them a wide berth when passing.

Not all people are associated with large or certain breeds. Although it's not to me because I am very familiar with dogs and can read body language pretty well, some people will find a large dog (especially one like a newf which has fur that makes it appear larger than it even already is) threatening. They may be afriad of certain dogs, ignorant, or just misinformed about breeds.
Just think about it- the person probably wasn't thinking, Oh, it's a newfie, they're horrible dogs, run the other way!" but maybe they're wary of large unknown dogs who are barking at them. ;)

Newfs are my favorite breed, my dad had one when I was a kid. Also newfies seem to know it. I have had more than 3 newfs drag their owners over to me for a good scratchin, 1 owner had never had that happen and his dog was very well trained.

I only had one very interesting experience with a Newfie a number of years ago. My neighbor called me and told me there was a black dog the size of a car sitting on my front stoop. No kidding. I opened the front door and there he was! Just sitting there looking in at me. I didn't know whether to laugh or run! He was huuuuuuuuge. He seemed very calm actually, but I was afraid to open the storm door because my cat who obviously had a death wish was sitting there looking at him, and I was afraid the dog would just invite himself in and have my cat for a snack. Soooo...I called my other neighbor who worked at the local animal sanctuary at the time and asked her to come over and check out this horse. Meantime, the dog just kept looking at me. He had a tongue the size of a slice of deli ham, I swear. She came over and walked right up to him, checked his tags, made a call and sure enough, the dog lived not too far away and had gotten out of his yard. By then we were both petting him and the owner came and got him. I thought he was a very sweet albeit very LARGE dog.

Some people, especially kids, don't really know the difference between different dog breeds (except the super obvious ones like dalmatians) and just divide them into "big dog / little dog" categories. My nephews and niece came over to visit when I still lived with my parents and they were terrified of my dog at first. She was a friendly lab mix, but they would scream in terror if she took a step towards them. (They did get over it eventually.)

I'm not afraid of Newfies. The few I have met have been very docile. No newfies have ever showed up on my front stoop, but we did have a great Pyrenees stop by one day! He was very mellow and nice. My parents leashed him and took him to his house, which was just up the street. They said they felt like they were walking a horse :D.

When I was a kid, my cousins had a big, black Newfie. He was the epitome of sweetness and drool. He just lumbered around and everything was sheer joy to him. Just a great disposition.

Newfs are great, and they are known for being wonderful with people and especially children. Don't worry, not all people think your Newf is a dangerous beast, I would love to meet him!!!
