I didn't. My mom came home with a Border Collie pup when I was 14, nearly 15. I was hooked.

I have always preferred the bigger dogs and researched most of the mastiff type breeds amoung others. Was looking for a dog with short hair, lower energy and a good temperament and settled on the English Mastiff as the best fit. Our first mastiff we adopted as an adult just to be sure it was what we wanted...now we have seven lol!

I have always ADORED boxers. Their looks are a big part of it, but I have fallen in love with their personality too. I do think that boxers are the idea dog for me, although some of their physical characteristics - such as cold and heat intolerance - are less than ideal. I would definitely get another boxer some day.

Collies just kind of fell on me...and they're actually a really good fit. I grew up with herding dogs. A boxer trains much different than a herding dog. I didn't realize how much a missed herding breeds until I got Logan. I think I'll stick with collies, too - I'm considering using them for my future service dog program. I've definitely fallen for them.

I am soooo with you! I want a second dog and cannot decide on a breed. Grrr! There's SO many dog breeds I love. What I've been doing so far though is basically scratching off dogs that I love and think I would like to have, but don't know if I could ever actually own one. If that makes any sense. Like, I love Boston Terriers, every one I've ever met. But I don't know if I could ever actually own one. I don't even know why in particular, I'm not just usually a squishy faced (proper term, right? ha!) dog fan, their almost too jumpy and hyper from what I've seen and while I find that cute when it's not my dog, I don't know if I could handle it.

I didn't really go searching for specific dog breeds when I got Jackson. I didn't know any better. I knew I needed a breed that considered hypoallergenic or shed minimally because I live with my stepfather who is allergic. I went looking on kijiji and craigslist, etc and I found Jackson's picture on the MD super ads site. I fell for his little face, etc, and then looked up the breed a bit, but did not do the research I should have. He's my big Yorkie boy, and in the process of researching, I've discovered Silky Terriers. For some reason, I keep going back to Silky for another second dog. To be perfectly honest, I don't like very many other peoples Yorkies, LOL. But I think it's totally the owners who ruins them, not the dogs themselves, and turns them into babies who whine to be picked up at the sight of another big dog, or bark their heads off at other big dogs, etc. I've met a few cool ones. But I definitely think they're coddled too much. Jackson is spoiled but he's allowed to be a dog. So another Yorkie or Silky is most likely in my future. I really love them when they are trained the right way.

My next rules for a dog is small, under 20lbs, has to enjoy other dogs, people friendly, smart and willing to learn, I'd prefer semi easy to train at least as I really enjoy training tricks, always up for something new such as swimming, hiking, traveling, etc. I'm looking at another Yorkie or Silky, Papillon, Westie, and a few other small terrier types recently, like the Border Terrier, Australian Terrier, etc.

I got a corgi because I wanted a dog on the smaller end of the spectrum without being in the toy size group. I wanted an active dog (hah!) that I could do sports with, go hiking with, etc. I wanted a smart dog (which I got.) Plus, they are so stinkin cute :p

Even though I won't be getting another dog for a few years, I am already searching for the right breed. Plus there's the boyfriend and we don't always agree on breeds, so that makes it harder too, lol.
We want a large, active dog with a smooth coat. Though we also know that we may have to go with a smaller dog because of housing, bleck. We already have a preliminary list, now we just need to start cutting it down

I had pretty much decided on a ACD but something just wasn't clicking with them so I was still looking through dogs. I wanted a herding breed but just couldn't find one to fit what I was looking for

So one day I was looking through a list of herding breeds, clicked on Koolie because the name was interesting sounding and read about them and everything fell into place, it was just amazing how much I immediately connected with this breed.

I started researching and more and more I read about them more I was in love with the breed-versatile, no animal aggression, no stranger wariness, biddable, intelligent, can think on it's own, athletic, healthy, not too big but not too small, and gorgeous in my opinion.

They were just perfect in every way and so far I'm not regretting it at all and I can see a lot of Koolie's in my future

When we first moved out to the country (about...15 years ago, now) my mom wanted to get a big dog that would serve as a watch dog and dad wanted a big dog that would serve as a varmit chaser. It also had to be great with kids, as I was five and my brother was seven, with two twin babies on the way. They were looking at pretrained young adult German Shepherds and were two heartbeats away from purchasing one when a coworker of my dad's said he had found a six month old Black Lab pup, and did we want it?

The rest is pretty much history. I grew up with Blackie and the kind of temperment he had is what I adore in a dog. Smart, loves to work, large size, imposing and watchful with some guarding ability, but nothing "unsafe", great with people, very solid, good with family pets, short coat, happy go lucky, active....the list goes on. Then when we raised Sadie for the guide dog organization, she was also a Lab and she WAS my perfect dog. Blackie had some animal aggression flaws, but Sadie was perfect.

Nothing else has just fit quite as well. I've been around tons of different breeds at the boarding facility and my own "pet" dogs have been an Alasken Malamute, GSD/ACD mix, a GSD/ACD/Lab mix, and a Collie/Aussie mix and nothing as quite clicked for me like a Lab. Although I would own a Pittie in a heartbeat if I didn't have to worry about animal aggression. Or a Great Dane if size wasn't an issue.

I didn't.

Milo was a gift from my dad....he did know I liked JRTs, however, and was interested. I probably would have chosen one anyone. I did want a bigger dog, but JRT was top choice for little dog. I like their intelligence, their athleticism. I wasn't aware of of their DA tendencies when Milo came home. I'd still get another, regardless. I think if the dog was from a good breeder or an older rescue, it would be certainly be manageable if I was away from home and my a$$hole family.

I think my next few dogs will be based more on what individual shelter/rescue dog fits what I want. There are probably 100 breeds I'd like to own, all different sizes, temperaments, etc. Maybe one day I'll find a breed and stick with it but I doubt it.

I don't really have my own breed yet (except for the Cutedor Springer Pointaroo), but the two breeds I'm 150% sure I not only want to own, but will own someday are Doberman Pinschers and Greyhounds. Dobes may be a bit farther off in the future, and I still haven't decided whether I want to rescue or go to a breeder (what I really want is a re-homed adult/young adult from a breeder - not sure that's feasible); but a Greyhound is going to be my next dog. With Greys, it's that I click with them and I know they're the right breed for me. With Dobes, it's their temperament and beauty, hands down.

Side note: Firefox wanted to correct "Pinschers" to "Pinfeathers." :rofl1:

Actually Saurus, there are quite often dogs, especially dobes that just don't pan out to be show dogs that end up getting rehomed into pet homes...

I have always loved Dobermans, ever since I was a little kid I have thought they were beautiful. When I breached the subject with my boyfriend at the time, he did not, under any circumstances, want a Dobe. I ended up evaluating our needs as a household and we ended up with Django, an Aussie. Aussies were perfect for Ryan, maybe not as perfect for me. Saga happening was pure fate I think. Ryan fell in love with her the second he met her at the shelter, despite her Doberman-ness.

I currently have a shortlist of what my next breed will be, but I still haven't quite narrowed it down completely.

Yup. The breeders I hung out with last weekend said that they often have young adults available more than puppies, they'd rather hang onto them and grow them out before placing them in a pet home and they also like to get all of the socialization done themselves, correctly, before placing them.

They even told me that they'd let me know when the red puppies they have are ready. o_O Turning that down was a bitch.

When I moved out, I just knew I was getting an ACD. I love, love, love herding breeds, and I wanted a partner to start in agility. Not really to compete with, just for fun.

Then I got the pity call about a poor Whippet mix that just needed a foster home for a few weeks...hello Argon! Sweet as sugar, quiet and perfect, a total loser at agility. Sigh.

Well, you guys can fill in the rest of that story, two years later he's still hanging out. Before him, I would have never considered a sighthound, but now...they kind of grow on you.

I still really like ACD's, and there will probably be one in my future, but I've fallen in love with Whippets too, and really want a long hair one, or possibly a Silken Windhound. I love the look of Borzoi's but they are a little large for my situation right now.

Of course, now that Grimm is back, that could all be very far in the future. I told him yesterday that if he wanted to stay, he better start learning to run through the agility tunnel at work. Of course he immmeaditatly did. Oh, Grimmy.

Emma, well I allways wanted a Doberman but we didnt have room were we were. So I wanted something small enough for our townhouse, but that wasnt breakable like most toys seem. Im not a small dog person. I though Beagles fit the bill, so I got one and fell head over heals in love with them.

I've wanted a Doberman since I was like 3. They were big, beautifull, and tough looking. When I got older I learned more about them, and they just suited me. I still love them.

We always seemed to have working breed mixes growing up, When I was born we had 2 old dogs, an ACD/Bull Terrier - Jack and a Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog/BC - Tussey.
Tussey was the pick of a repeat breeding from a friend of my mums, he used to cross his cattle dog to his BC bitch and the cross always turned out incredible working dogs. He ended up giving mum the pick but the effort didn't go into her and she ended up pretty crazy I think. Mum used to find her in the middle of road with a collection of chooks, just holding them because she knew she was meant to, cars driving around her.
Byt he time I was born she was a 3 legged dog, eventually loosing one leg the 3rd time she got hit by a car. Mum still wishes I could have got her now she sounds incredible.

Then we ended up with the mixed up bunch we have now, I have a soft spot for cattle dog mixes.

When I got a chance to get my next dog I knew hat I wanted, a herding breed, either kelpie, BC or koolie. So I just startedlooking everywhere, if I hadn't found Quinn when I did I was about to put my name down on a Kelpie litter born the start of this month. But as for what I wanted with this dog, I think a Bc was probably a better fit more eager to please than a kelpie and slightly more handler orientated. Maybe a kelpie next.

Oh I know there are. But the thing is, I don't know how easy it's going to be to find the right adult from a breeder, and the impression I have gotten is that it's easier to buy a puppy from a breeder than it is an adult. It could depend upon the breeder, though - I don't know. I just don't want to spend three years waiting for the right dog, if that makes sense, but when it comes to Dobes I do not want a puppy and I'm not negotiable on that.

It's probably going to end up with me talking to a bunch of breeder and a few rescues and just figuring out what works best for me at the time.

I always wanted a poodle since I was little. ;) and wanted a dog that learns fast.

And a non heavy shedding dog 'case my mom would be really angry with one, and I wanted a dog with long hair to brush, this is our first long haired dog. :D

Hi all,
I'm new here. This is such a great thread. I was actually going to post and ask what everyone's favorite breed was, but the post was already here. I'm in between dogs right now, so this is great to hear what people think of the different breeds.
