I must admit that when my dogs circle around their bedding before sleeping it always generates a chuckle from yours truly---cheap humor. Especially Travis, as he religiously circles eleven times each and every time before collapsing for a snooze!!! When all ten of them are circling about at the same, it looks like a whirling Dervish performance!!!

I love watching them too. THe way they use their paws to fluff out the blanket or whatever
I have always wondered. Searched the questions and found this.

In the wild, a wandering dog would have to make sure that the spot where he was about to lie didn't contain cactus, scorpions, snakes, jagged rocks, etc. The walking in a circle gives him time to examine the area he's about to lie down on to make sure it's safe and comfortable. "
Guess that is the short answer. If I really thought about it, I probably could of came up with that common sense answer.
