As far as scratching, it's been my experience that all leather collars will scratch and there isn't much that can be done about it unfortunately. Conditioning helps, but there will always be some scratch marks.
Glad to hear this from a few ppl. :) I never had leather collars before and did not know what was normal and what wasn't! :)

Toller, I don't know if you remember her from PNP but that was WhiplashAPBT with Gaia and Red Bull
Yes! I knew the name sounded familiar. I vaguely remember seeing a thread about Macky's collar when Emily got it now I think. Not sure if I realized whiplash made it though, or if I did, I must've forgotten. Now I feel bad, haha.

Yep! She's small scale right now and pretty much just word of mouth.
Her work is really nice. I've been checking out some of her stuff today and I'm impressed. I'd love to get my hands on one of her collars in person so I can see how they feel and hold up.

This.

The silly Ella's Lead vs Paco collars debate manages to take over every leather thread
I think it is just a thread to give personal experiences with certain products/businesses. I gave my experience with PC. I have no EL's so I can't comment on their products.

I sincerely hope that this can just be a thread of personal experiences and not a bash fest. :dunno:

I personally have nothing against either collar maker. I have an EL collar that used to belong to Rory and it looks fab on Cricket. It's been getting softer with wear and I love when leather becomes butter smooth. I also am intrigued by her vegan collars though would like to read more reviews on them before I make the plunge and I want to see how they feel. I'm such a texture person when it comes to collar material.

I also love Paco collars and there are a few I'd love to get my hands on and from the few I've seen in person they are incredible quality. I've also heard mostly great things about their customer service.

I don't have any experience with Paco, but I've been very happy with my leather EL collars and their service, they worked very hard to help me with a custom design for Squash and repaired Maisy's at no cost after I broke off the "double" layer in a freakish accident.

ETA: At some point I'll get Pip a vegan one, he swims SO much in the summer I don't think leather would be best, but I'm eyeing some designs for him.

Really? I thought this was a very informative, civil thread about people's personal experiences. And yes, I do know the back story between the debate. Sometimes its better not to read more into things and take it as face value.

This is exactly what I was thinking....there was no "war" on this thread til people brought it up.

Personally, I never thought about buying a Paco, too much $$. I understand the cost, but not something I was willing to pay. I was gifted one and wow, they are amazing.

The other leather collars I have are collar mania...wish she was still making them. I know Ella's Lead took over for her.

This!

I love being able to see pictures of other peoples collars and read experiences- otherwise, I'd never have known how pretty the Whiplash collars are.

Has anyone ever ordered from California Collar Company? They have some really pretty, finished looking collars. I wanted to order some collars for my chis from them, but they won't make anything under 10" due to heavyness of their hardware.

I have an Ella's Lead collar for Rosey, which was unfortunately retired after a year. I wouldn't go with the coloured leathers if you and it to last much time... Roseys was pink leather, and was retired afte a year cause it just looked gross. She was also 14 when she got it, doesn't play with other dogs, didn't go swimming in it, doesn't really pull or roll in gross things.

ETA: I wanted to get a real simple one for Harley, for her therapy visits, too. They were all for making a collar that small, until they learned it was for Harley. Something about it being a safety hazard... Even though she currently has a collar she wears around.

Those Karma collars look really nice! I don't know if I've come across them before. My dogs really, really don't need new collars (their Pacos were supposed to be their last ones), but I can't help but look every now and again.

I agree. I even went looking back to see if I totally missed something somehow, and I didn't. I shared my experience with the company that made my collars because that's who I chose to buy from. I know nothing about the products other companies make as far as hands on goes, because I've never bought from them. So I can't really say anything either for or against.

I've never ordered from them, but I know somebody who has a collar from them and it is really nice! The collar didn't seem much heavier than any other collar I've felt with brass hardware, but it might have been. It was really pretty.

I've never heard of them but I just looked up their site. They have some really nice designs.

I love this one:

I really need to just stop looking at collars. They're more addictive for me than purses.
I reeaaaaallly want this one for Mu. The Mission

I'm actually considering getting into leatherworking for fun. And because I've done enough crafting that when I look at things I say "Oh well I could probably make that!" It's both a blessing and a curse. LOL

The vegan is like nothing I've felt before. Unfortunately they do not send samples (I, too, really wanted to feel it before I spent that much). The leather came very stiff. The vegan, OTOH, came very pliable and stretchy, yet so sturdy. It looks just like leather, with the exception that the vegan has stitching versus the leather did not. I can't wait to see how it holds up to water this summer!

These are my two EL's Vegan and Latigo Leather:

Next I am very interested in purchasing a more tradition leather collar for Blaze. And I would like to look into getting a few plain vegan's in various colors for everyday wear.

I have never purchased from Paco because I've always felt they were very expensive. They do have lovely looking collars, and decent sales!

My mom and dad used to do some leatherworking when they were young (prekids muah ha ha). I have debated getting into it a bit but I know me....I dabble a LOT in crafts and dont really follow through. This would be an expensive dabble.

I was just looking at that one as well! Haha.

I keep thinking about getting into leatherworking. I have a feeling that after buying everything needed and making my own collars, they won't look nearly as pretty! I think I'll leave it to the experts :lol-sign:
