Last night was Blackie's very first obedience lesson. Mom and I didn't really know how well things were going to go since Blackie has some dog aggresion issues. Well, Blackie was one of the best dogs in the class! :D (Which is actually pretty sad, but....lol)
We took him into the building and he semi-ignored all of the other dogs. He was whining (that is what he does when he wants to go after a dog, but he knows he isn't supposed to) but aside from that he didn't do anything. We worked on heeling and our sits last night and he did very well. He only tried to go after a HUGE Golden (actually, it looked more like brown) Retriever but I corrected him, and he didn't try to do it again.
He did a very good job of sitting when I told him too, and he kinda got the concept of heeling toward the end of the lesson. (Either that, or he was just sleepy. lol) But I was having trouble remembering to say 'heel' unstead of 'let's go'. lol I got confused and I was like, "Let's heel'. lol
And also, at the end when our instructor was talking to us, he actually laid down and wanted me to scratch his belly! (I was shocked because for him to lay down, belly up, around other dogs was amazing.)
Ok, so that was my brag about my old puppy. lol Now here is my thoughts on the other dogs that were there. *grins evily* ;)

There were about 3 Goldens, 5 labs (counting Blackie), a beautiful Rottie, a Wire Haired Pointing Griffon (or a Liver collored Schnauzer that wasn't docked or cropped...), a Border Collie mix, a Papillon, a Maltese, a Mini Schnauzer, 2 JRTs, and a Corgi. (I think that was about all.....oh wait, there was a Aussie mix, a GSD/Husky mix, and if there where anymore, I sure wasn't concentrating on them...their was a merle beagle [I swear that was it's coloring] but I don't know if it ever joined in....I just saw it sitting toward the edge of the building with a parent holding the leash...)
And man, I thought Blackie was going to be bad, all of the little dogs (except the Maltese and the Corgi) where BRATS! At least one of them was yipping the whole time, and then the Papillon, the Schanuzer, and one of the JRTs kept trying to attack the other dogs. (That Papillon tried to take on the Rottie! ) Of course, the smaller dogs were handled by younger kids who knew squat, so that probably had something to do with it.
And about halfway through the lesson, I was about ready to give Blackie to my mom and go over to the girl with the Schanuzer and tell her to praise her dog. We would be in a sit, and her Schnauzer would stand up. I'd hear "NO. Sam, sit." She'd push down on his butt, he'd sit. Not a word. The Schanuzer'd pop up agian. "NO! Sam, SIT!" The dog would sit, not a word. That was really irking me. She had no problem telling the dog no, but wouldn't praise him when he did what she wanted to, even though the trainers were telling us, "When your dog does something you want him to, Praise him!"
So to sum it all up, I had a good time, Blackie had a good time (although he was pooped toward the end), and the trainers were pretty good. (Not the best, but good.) What they seemed to stress the most was, "When your dog does something you like, praise him, when he does something you don't like, correct him, and do NOT tolorate them going after the other dogs or him ignoring your commands."

(Oh, and Blackie was put through torture. He couldn't pee on anything for 45 min. strait! :p lol As soon as we stepped out the door, he went to the nearest vertical object and peed a flood. lol Crazy dog.... )

Sounds like Blackie's first day of school went well! They can really surprise you sometimes. You get all set to deal with a problem and it just doesn't happen. Don't you just love it when it works that way? :D

Congratulations!!! Sounds like Blackie did a really good job :)!!

I know what you mean about praise...the neighbors have a large black lab mix named Rocky. They fail to keep him on a leash and he escapes and runs around the neighborhood. It takes about five minutes of them yelling down the street, "Rocky, come! Come! Come!" for the darn dog to obey, and only a few times have I heard them praise him.

Ya, know kidding. I'd rather get all prepared and not have to face the problem, then get all prepared and have to face it. lol The first way is just easier.
But, I have a question. What is the easiest way to teach heel? The way that we were doing it in class, Blackie wasn't really picking up on, and so I tried to teach him to do it the way that my dog training book does, but he wasn't picking up on that either. (The way that I was doing it was when he is by my left side, I praise the heck out of him, but then if he pulls or gets distracted, I turn around and go another direction. He didn't seem to be getting that he was supposed to pay attention to me and stay right by my left side. [He does have the sitting when stopping down pat though. ;) ])

Yaaaaaaaaaaay Blackie!!!!

And I'm proud of you Rosie's Gal for noticing what the other owners could've been doing differently. I learn a lot from watching people who don't know what they're doing! :D

YAY Blackie!!! And, congrats to you, Rose's Gal ;)

My Mom taught Shelby to heel (I haven't done it with my puppies yet) by pulling Shelb's shoulder up against her leg, and saying "heel" at the same time. Then, she'd praise the heck out of her. She picked it up real quick.

I have a question: why is it that they say to teach your dog to walk on your LEFT side? I always find it more comfortable to walk a dog on my right (I'm right handed, and my right arm is stronger than my left), so, I've always done it that way.

I teach heel by having the dog at my left side, it's paw right by my foot. I shorten the leash and say, "Heel!" once the dog has heeled, I give verbal praise (it's kind of hard to give treats) and we keep walking. This is how I taught Tippy a few months ago. I find she heels better when the leash is loose, though.

heel

Hi, I am teaching my four month old puppy to heel right now by using his favorite treat or toy (in the beginning a treat works the best) and holding it in my right hand with Kesh's head parallel with my left knee on the left side, then I put the treat waist high over by the left side of my waist and say heel start walking and continue walking and praising, while keeping the dog moving with me by using the treat as an incentive, then when I stop I have him sit and praise him again. I only actually give him food once awhile. It is working really well for all of the dogs in my class.

Good Luck!

Ok, thanks. I'll try doing what you guys have suggested. He stays by my left side once he is tired, but when he still has energy, he wants to go. (Which means, not staying by my left side but bouncing ahead.)

And, one more quick question. Would it be to confusing for him to have him know that when I say, "Let's go" he can walk on a loose leash, but when I say "heel" I need him to walk on my left side?

Oh, I had to add this. I had him outside yesterday and we were practicing our heels. I had a bacon treat (Begg'n strip) in my pocket (I like to train with those because I can break them up small and my dogs LOVE them). I told Blackie heel and started walking. I looked down at him and he was bouncing along my left side looking at me like, "Ok, can I have the treat now? How about now? Now? How 'bout now? Now, please?" I started cracking up and I praised him alot and gave him part of the treat. It was just so funny because he was in an almost perfect heel position and was looking at me, but he was prancing around giving me the look like, "I'm happy! So give me the treat already!" lol :p :D

No, it wouldn't be confusing. Those are two different ways of going and he is capable of understanding the difference. My dog does that too, "let's go" means a loose leash or if off leash, to stick around close. "Heel" means heel, (LOL) a tight, formal, neat heel with his shoulder even with my left leg.

It sounds like he's doing wonderfully and you're giving him a good time while he's learning. That's terrific! That prancing along, looking at you is just the thing I strive for and treats and praise are great at times like those. Good work Blackie! :)

Ok, another brag.

Sorry if you guys are getting sick and tired of my bragging, but I've never had a reason to brag about my dogs before and now I do! :D (I just can't help it......lol)
Well, I was just outside with the dogs for their evening exercise and I had Wesley (my 9yr old brother) clip Rose on the retractable leash and walk her around a bit. While Wes was doing that, I was going to work on heeling with Blackie. I tried the method that Kesh suggested and guess who was heeling without a treat after a couple of tries? Blackie was!!! :D
I had him heel with the treat in my hand a couple of times untill I was almost sure he got it, and then I just put my hand in the same position without the treat and he still heeled!! Oh, did he get big bucks for that! He had a very good time and after a pretty long heel with a treat, we went on a walk loose leash style for an end-of-training reward.
After a couple more days, I'm hoping he'll get the heeling concept. Right now he is just following the treat, but in a couple more days....who knows! (Ok, I'll shut up now..... ;) )

I love to hear the little details of improvement or advances that everyones' dogs make. That's fantastic. Yes, he'll get in the habit and it sounds like you're dedicated to making it happen. So, go girl and don't worry about sharing. That's what this place is for.

I have another question. This time it is about Blackie's dog aggresion. This Thursday is when our next lesson is. My question is this: Will Blackie get more dog aggressive toward the dogs that we are training with because the shock of taking him to a new building, in a new place, with strange dogs has worn off, or will he eventually get used to them and learn to tolorate them?

My OES was aggressive, and I socialized her way too late. If I knew then what I know now, she probably would have been very different. It took awhile, but she was able to be around strange dogs in almost any situation as long as it did not involve them entering her house. With that said, it did not happen overnight. I took her either to dog beach or the park everyday and I think it took about a month before I even attempted to let her off the leash. Every dog is different. It sounds like you are doing a great job.
