Oh I don't know. I saw A LOT of "right wing whack jobs" and "tea baggers" thrown around before they had any suspects. if you are white and doing these things it's just assumed you are a right wing fanatic, Christian lunatic or tea party whacko....
Might not be about an entire race but bigotry flies in all directions.
When the Sandy hook guy was caught I don't recall people being all "oh it's so sad... what a misguided young white man". People were pissed and I don't think anyone took pity on the shooter.
Racist backlash =/= people saying you're a christian lunatic tea party nut job.
Racism=/=people saying mean things
Words hurt, no doubt about it. I am not trying to diminish that.
But I'm sorry you are not going to convince me ever that it could ever compare to the backlash middle easterners and other minorities have faced after terrorist attacks and similar happenings.
It just isn't true.
People looked at the sandy hook shooter and many DID (and do) blame the mental health system in this country, the gun laws etc.. he was an evil madman and a monster but he was an INDIVIDUAL.
Do you think mental health systems would have even been discussed if the man had been middle eastern? black? I know that isn't true. Like it or not, the man was humanized. He was hated of course, but he was hated as an individual PERSON.
NOT as a token man representing his entire race.
Nobody said "Well white people are ______, look at the sandy hook shooter!"
The white race did not take a hit or were described as a whole as violent people because of the actions of few.
Ever walk into a restaurant and have someone tell you to go back to your country?
Blame you and people that look like you for a tragedy you had no part of?
Anyone ever ask for your point of view on a tragedy because you are a certain race and thereby, have a different opinion?
Google the word terrorist, take a look at image search.. what do you see? any white people? Nope.
prison sentences for black men are nearly 20% longer than white men for the same crime. Just an example.
Bigotry and racism does fly in all directions and but if you honestly can't see white privilege or the DIFFERENCE in how other races are treated then I don't know what to tell you.
If you honestly think tea baggers get more hate and racism than muslims and minorities in this country, especially when it comes to acts of terror and violence and racist backlash... then I'm sorry but you are very very wrong.
White privilege. It is a thing and it exists and I would hope that people would learn to recognize it and understand it.
yes, there is plenty of hate and anger for all groups in this country.
but you need to recognize that even if hate against white christian groups hurts you the most.. it is CERTAINLY not the worst out there and certainly not the most harmful or frequent.
You will never serve more jail time for being a white christian. Never not get voted into office. Never not have anyone on TV that represents you. With rare exceptions, never not get a job you deserve. You will be properly represented in your history classes and writers of your race will be featured in literature courses. There will be no hypen in classes about your race (Asian-american studies, african-american literature), your race and religion is more than likely the "norm" while everyone else is "other"
Hate sucks.. no matter what. I am not trying to say it's "more ok".. but I am trying to say that people need to take a minute and understand that although they feel hate, there are groups that feel it much much worse.
The hate you feel as a white christian person
IS NOT THE SAME.
AT ALL.
AND NEVER WILL BE.
As a minority.
Sorry.
You might feel hate and that sucks. but you are not oppressed and to try to put the hate you feel in the same category as those who are oppressed and persecuted is wrong.
Period.
