My sister just got a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I was just wondering if anyone on here has any breed specific info that I should pass on. I have read some things, but it is nice to hear from people with experience. Thanks!

Ditto Grammy!

Only advice I offer is switch to an adult food so the bones don't grow to fast and cause problems.

i love Berners! They're great dogs...sooo obedient and loyal.

I agree with switching to adult food early and be careful about jumping and running too much causing stress on joints.

I've trained quite a few Berners. The majority were quite sensitive and a little shy, nothing like the newfoundlands and leonberger I've trained. I was surprised. They were really great dogs, but you do have to make sure that they get plenty of proper socialization and very fair training, preferably with a strong emphasis on the positive. They should not be yelled at or corrected harshly. I'd compare them in some ways to a sheltie...

I would second the DO NOT over exercise till fully grown.

I believe it's 5 mins exercise for every month of life till about 1 yr - 18 months?

Well I may own a samoyed but Bernese Mountain dogs are my FAV breed. I plan to own them when I have more time and money to devote to my pack of Berners! They are my dream dogs. Unfortunately the breeding lines have been getting worse and worse with these big guys. I know quite a few and had my heart stollen by one big guy in particular. He turned out to have a bone growth in his right foot which made it turn and face outwards. Just last year he was in the hospital on the verge of death when he was diagnosed with addisons disease and an over active thyroid! I also love another berner female who has and under active thyroid and she had to have elbow and knee surgery at 1 year of age. So needless to say they can be pricey if you get some bad genes BUT if it was searched out right and they got one from a good breeder then things should work out great. Also like others have said take it slow with over working the dog while they are growing, they are a large breed dog and are sensitive in both bones and personality.

Here are a couple pictures of me and Calloway (he's the large berner) And Shelby is the smaller female!
