I have a friend at work whose dog had puppies on February 14th. She had 12 puppies. I asked her a couple of days ago how the puppies were doing and she said they were doing good and that their eyes were starting to open. Then she told me that there was one strange thing that was happening but she didn't know why it was happening. She said that the mama dog is taking a particular puppy in her mouth, and keeps bringing it to different members of the family. She said that most of the time the dog will bring the puppy to her daughter. She said that she has put the puppy on her daughter's bed next to her a couple of times and one time she even put the puppy right on her daughter's chest when she was laying down.

I have never had experience with a mama dog and a litter of puppies so I don't understand what is going on either. So I thought I would come here and ask because of the wealth of knowledge on this site. Does anyone have any idea what is happening with this mama dog and the puppy? Thanks in advance for your help.

I'd advise her to take them to the vet to get everything checked out. It'd be a good idea anyway, and she can ask about that particular puppy, and see if he's okay.

Agree. Often, when something is wrong with a puppy, the mama has the instinct to cull or get rid of that one in order to conserve resources (milk, her care and time) for the others....to get the best chance of saving more of them. She should get them all to the vet to get checked over...and the Mom should be looked at too. Good luck to her.

Thank you so much for the replies. I will let her know what you all suggested and hopefully she will do the right thing and get them all checked out by a vet.
