I'm in Texas, and we're all watching. Many people in the Houston area are already packing up and evacuating, just in case. I'm more inland. Even if Gustav does veer this way, the worst my area will get are severe storms and perhaps tornados.

Poor New Orleans and Mississippi! It looks like the storm is probably going to whack directly into them. Haven't they been through enough? :(

Anybody evacuating, or keeping an eye on the storm?

I'm just waiting for Louie to come on with some puns about her coming to America. ;)

Well that and i'm really hoping it downgrades quickly!

My hometown (parents) are and are already evacuating. The cluster**** that was the Rita evacuation warded them towards an early evacuation this time around.

I really been trying to keep up with it.... so far it looks to hit mostly texas/louisiana/miss, am I correct?

I doubt my part of Tx I am moving back to, Ft Worth area, will get hit with anymore than rain.

Keeping all who is in its path in my prayers and thoughts.

I don't think it'll get to my area of the state, but I have friends in disaster relief and they started to prepare yesterday. We might be getting a lot of evacuees up here, and if so I've told my friends I can help if they need another person. I too hope it downgrades quickly, but I also hope that my area gets some rain out of it, we've had quite a dry summer!

Yup. We're right smack in the projected northeast quadrant & will be on the east side (the worst side for those that don't know about hurricanes ;) ).

It's crazy here. Mandatory evacs have started tomorrow and contraflow (Interstates 10 & 12 will only flow in one dirction as will Highway 90) starts tomorrow night.

There is nothing left to buy......it's all been bought. I can't find bread anywhere. Thank goodness I remembered about 5 minutes ago I have a bread machine, so I'm headed to the store later to get yeast as I have everything else I need to make several loaves of bread.

We're stocking up and will be boarding up the house as soon as we know exactly where it will hit. My husband works for Shell and he's been declared "essential personnel" so he will be a part of the skeleton crew who will bunk at the plant and ride the storm out there.

His family lives in St. Bernard and St. Charles Parishes, & many of them are coming to stay in our small, already cramped home. Yippee. The worst part is I HATE his parents Bulldog, who has already growled at my son for literally no reason other than Cole walked by him, and my mil refuses to kennel him. Too bad sweetheart. Not only is the dog going to be kenneled, his kennel is going to be where all the other dogs' kennels are - the garage. And his other aunt is brining their Bichon Frise who has never been kenneled. Too bad again. We have an extra kennel the the marshmellow will reside in it. And I'm sure my dogs are going to want to eat it....or at least taste it. Great.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. For those that don't know, we lost 5 dogs when a tree fell on our house compliments of a nearby tornado that touched down. I also lost my last horse (a total of 6 horses died) when a tree fell on the barn.

But we don't have anymore trees, so I'm a little bit comforted by that fact.

Tomorrow, when Craig's family gets here, I'm heading to my friend's house where I keep my horses, and we are going to do what we can to "hurricane-proof" it. They actually cut their tree down that was towering over the barn. So we'll be tarping all around the barn and building all the stalls up.

I guess my biggest sadness is Craig's uncle is sugar cane farmer and last year was his first good crop (& 2nd crop) since Katrina & Rita damaged all the fields. That's their sole income. It's going to hit them hard.

Thanks everyone!

And I noticed I didn't say that I lost the dogs during Hurrican Katrina. That's when we get the most tornados...during hurricanes.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays a Cat 3 & doesn't become a Cat 4!

Keeping you in my thoughs and prayers! Emergency evacs. stink... We had evacuate once, because our house was right on the ocean (as in on stilts...). Wasn't Katrina exactly 3 years ago yesterday?

Ugh. So it seems there's a good chance of Gustav being a Cat. 4 with sustained winds of or over 145 mph when it hits us. This totally sucks.

I've been cleaning the house all day and we're trying to get everyone situated, but it's hard as a) they've all left to go shopping at the Mall of Louisiana and left me cook and clean all by myself...oh, & take care of their dogs too and b) Craig is now stuck at the plant as a part of the skeleton crew to keep things going and won't be home until who knows when.

We're going to be boarding up the windows tomorrow night, if the storm stays on track or worse, shifts a touch to the east & gives us a direct hit, and it sucks to be in a dark house devoid of natural light. Especially when you've got 5 adults, 2 teenagers, a 2-yr-old and an infant and 8 dogs all in a 1,700 sq. ft. house. This is enough to make me want to move to Arizona or something.

STAY SAFE EVERYONE!!!

There have been mailings going out for anyone with land to help temporarily house farmers and their stock to get them out of harm's way. I wish I could help!

I'm in Slidell, La and we have decided to stay this time. I hope the house will survive the winds.
