The truth is, serious dog bites and dog bite fatalities are extremely uncommon.

"For the average person in the U.S., how likely are you to die from:

Car accident? 1 in 6700

Murder? 1 in 18,000

On-the-job accident? 1 in 48,000

Bathtub drowning? 1 in 840,000

Lightning? 1 in 3 million

Hornet, wasp or bee sting? 1 in 6.1 million

Shark attack? 1 in 280 million

Where do dogs fit in?

Janis Bradley, dog bite researcher and the author of ‘Dogs Bite: But Balloons and Slippers Are More Dangerous,’ states, “Dogs can be dangerous. And they are more dangerous to children than adults. Not as dangerous, of course, as kitchen utensils, drapery cords, five-gallon buckets, horses or cows. Not nearly as dangerous as playground equipment, swimming pools, skateboards, or bikes. And not remotely as dangerous as family, friends, guns, or cars.

A child is more likely to die choking on a marble or balloon, and an adult is more likely to die in a bedroom slipper related accident. Your chances of being killed by a dog are roughly one in 18 million. [emphasis added]" dog bites YesBiscuit!

No you are not in the wrong, and I must say he does have some points there.

Now I'm even more confused. But eventually, it's the humans that are to be blamed and not the breed itself.

I see this sentiment a LOT on breed specific boards and it is so frustrating. I stalk a bunch of boards with breeds that interest me (and now YT trying to figure out how to groom Ada).

There is a lot of 'our breed is different, they would never do that'. I've seen it on the BC boards, sheltie boards, pretty much everywhere. It just baffles me that people who are obviously very passionate about their own breeds would advocate banning someone else's. I guess it's the 'as long as it's not us' mentality.

Yorkies are terriers too. Ada will hang off of something if she gets her teeth into it. I saw the one comment that pit bulls were vicious because they bite and latch on and shake... um... terrier, maybe? Or the fact that they should be banned because they were bred to kill? Well there goes about half the breeds out there. I don't get the 'evidence' that they're using at all.

What sets the American Pit Bull Terrier apart is the TERRIER. That's it. They are TERRIERS. Like every other breed out there, there are mixes, there are lines with really bad genetics, there are lines that people have tampered with and turned into something they are not, and there are individual dogs that have suffered from human treatment.

Just like every other breed out there.

Yes, it does take a different owner from, say, a Sheltie person, but vice versa, a lot of APBT people couldn't deal with a Sheltie.

These people who want to destroy someone else's breed of choice . . . Just because it's "just a dog" doesn't mean it's not genocide. They might as well join PETA and be done with it.

yes but they're little terriers so they can't *really* hurt people if they're aggressive. *eyeroll*
lol yes that's been said a lot. I know Ada isn't full yorkie but she may only be 17 lbs but she's a STRONG 17 lbs. A lot of the traits I see people using to 'prove' that pit bulls are evil killing machines are the same traits I see in her and pretty much most other terriers. But it's just fine in other breeds, I suppose.

Anyways, Brit, I totally feel you on this.
