I was supposed to get to help whelp a borzoi litter for a breeder who lives about an hour from me. I was very excited because I've never seen puppies born. The bitch went into labor a couple of days early, and she didn't nest or go off of her food or anything. So, I got the call last night that she was having contractions, and the puppies were on their way.
I had to take care of my animals and then drive out through a terrible storm, so I arrived about two hours after the call to discover she'd had 7 puppies in 54 minutes (4 males, 3 females)--all weighing in at over a pound. It was apparently the fastest, easiest whelp ever. Mom and puppies are all doing well.
I enjoyed getting to see the newborns (sorry, I didn't have a camera with me), but one day, I'd like to be there for the process, not just the results.
