Is anyone else horrified of what the dog world will look like in 20 years?

I just got attacked by a group of animal rights activists. I was told I support puppy mills, that I abuse animals, and that I am responsible for dogs being killed.

This is not new. It is increasingly happening to me and to others in very public forums where a large portion of moderate dog lovers are present. This extremist attitude honestly scares the hell out of me.

I am horrified of what the dog world will look like in the near future. I am horrified of laws, I am horrified of the people. More and more, I feel that people that share my animal welfare viewpoint are outnumbered by the animal rights activists. I find it increasingly difficult to find people who support animal welfare (most often I find people who appear to be welfare advocates, but claim to be animal rights activists and are slowly moving further and further away after being poisoned by rights-based beliefs).

I fear for the pet world as a whole. I fear for exotic pets, cat, dogs, farm animals. It all scares me the way this is going and because people are so quick to jump on something and twist it, and because the bandwagon of that is so quickly filled up and pushed to the forefront, I fear that this is the mentality we will be seeing reign in the future.

Someone please tell me I am just paranoid.
Please tell me that I don't need to worry about animal rights extremists allowing the government to tell me what I can and cannot do with what I can and cannot own and ignoring statistics of what does and does not work.
Please tell me that I have nothing to be worried about and that the pet world will remain one of the last places I can retreat to and have some semblance of freedom in.
:(

I do not personally know a single person with extreme views about animals. So there is hope, hopefully.

This is just disgusting. I've got messages to my inboxes full of hate and insults about my APPEARANCE. That has NOTHING to do with animals. What the hell is wrong with people? Seriously.

Yeah, and I'm not sure what they could find to insult about your appearance. Like, at all.

Sounds like some real unhappy piled on top of the crazy

DO you support puppy mills? do you abuse animals? Ask yourself, ARE you responsible for dogs being killed?

If not, then you don't need to worry about animal rights extremists allowing the government to tell you what you can and cannot do with what you can and cannot own.

If you are not doing anything wrong, do not expect the government to do anything to prevent you from what you're doing.

Well, let's see where we are in 20 years in regards to space travel. If nothing else, we can pack up our pets and go live on Nibiru or something. :p

Errr.....when has the government ever cared before about me doing anything in regards to forcing me to do it anyway?

They've enacted rights-based laws elsewhere at the pushing of these people, albeit on a much smaller scale.

The government has attacked me before with laws. I don't see why they'd suddenly stop just because animal rights activists have extremists attitudes and we don't agree with them.

There are all kinds of laws that exist for no reason that take away our rights. BSL for example. It doesn't matter whether you actually hurt animals. If enough voters complain, the government will pass laws against you.

And according to many rights activists, BSL only exists because of breeders. Not because of a misinformed public or politicians who make knee-jerk decisions based on absolutely false information, but because of breeders. Breeders hold the blame.

Kinda pathetic when someone stands up for a politician's ignorance just to shame a breeder.

Bleh, makes me shudder.

Well that's going to depend on certain people's opinions. AM I responsible for dogs being killed? I chose to purchase a dog from a breeder; some would say I killed a shelter dog. I've used prong and e-collars; some would say that's abuse.

I think her point is that extreme views are becoming more common place... and who knows what will happen in 20 years.

And I think it's silly and comically naive to say that as long you don't do anything wrong the government won't bother you.

In 20 years it'll probably be illegal to do anything with your dog (approved breeds only) besides fed them and sleep ok the couch with them. Probably be illegal to let them go outside in the elements, gotta get em one of those Astroturf pads to pee on. Only approved dog food brands- Purina and Science Diet, and no skinny dogs, MUST be at least 15lbs overweight.

I do not know any extreme AR people. There are people at my work that say things like "No dog should be bred!" but they are not on the far end of the crazy spectrum (even though I very much disagree with them.) I do know plenty of people who support PETA because they have no idea what they ACTUALLY are about. If they took a split second to research they would not.

It's not so much people who openly support PETA or HSUS or who have extreme beliefs and consider themselves "Animal Rights Activists". It's that the influence of the Animal Rights movement extremely far reaching and has crept in the minds of many people, even those who are from being AR supporters.

I made the mistake of referring to animals as 'stock' in a conversation tonight. I was never under the impression that the term stock is a derogatory term to AR extremists, but holy crap if I didn't catch a whirlwind of insults for THAT. The entirety of my post was ignored solely because I used that word. I've never seen such moronic behaviour in my life.

I think the crazies like to flood the internet. Most people don't seem to be as radical as the wackadoos you find online... at least, so I hope.

For some reason this thread prompted me to go look at Animal Rights Forums... Oh my word, I would not have believed some of the stuff I saw.

I kept seeing them talking about being hunt 'sabs' and I had to go figure out what that meant. There's some crazy folk out there for sure!

Not so much on the original topic, but...

I'm currently going to school with the people that will staff the veterinary field for the next 20 years - and that scares the h*ll out of me.
