A hole in the bottom of the sea.
Just because a person allows their cat outdoors does not automatically lump them into the group of irresponsible owners. That is like saying anyone who would ever allow their dog offleash is irresponsible. It simply isn't true.

You'll have your bad owners that allow their cats to be reckless, and then you have the responsible owners that have s/n cats that are well cared for, but just simply allowed to go outdoors certain times of the day, rather than being imprisoned.
If you will read my post very carefully, I never said that everyone who allows their cats outside is irresponsible.

If someone allows their dogs off leash in an area where it is against the law, or on other peoples' property unless they have their express permission, then it *is* irresponsible.

Likewise, if someone allows their cat to roam where it is against the law, or on property that they do not have *express* permission for the cat to be using (the property owner failing to complain does not count as permission), then that person is acting irresponsibly, failing to be courteous to those around them, and putting their beloved pet at considerable risk.

I'm not sure why this concept is so difficult.

Dekka, I didn't know that and I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I had a similar situation one night when I was unable to stop and badly mangled someone's beloved pet cat with my grandmother's 1972 Impala. The cat came running after a squirrel, which made it across the street but the cat jumped into the street, got clipped by the underside of my bumper and got mangled by the undercarriage and drive train to be spit out the back with one leg hanging off, and the other three badly broken and twisted. Yet this cat laid there meowing pitifully because it hadn't died from the accident. I bawled my eyes out while I slit his throat with my utility knife to put him out of his misery. I bagged him and brought him home where I buried him in the woods the next day. There was no way I was going to leave this cat in this condition to be found by his owners. I'm sure to this day the owners think he simply wandered off and lived a happy life hunting mice and birds in the fields.

The sound of his cries and the site of his blood pouring over my hands and knife haunts me every time I think about it. I'm crying as I post this.

Eddie that is so horrible too! I wonder at people who think this could never happen to their pet.

We were behind a car in a residential area that hit a cat. They kept going.. I had Mark stop so I could go back to see if it was mangled and dead, or mangled and alive. Thank God that cat was dead.

So for all you people who think cats should be able roam as they please... you can really be upsetting the people who have to clean up after your irresponsibility.

I can speak to a loose cat happening. A loose cat came into my well fenced dog yard. A beautiful black and white long haired tom cat.
my dogs got a cat once too and i was so upset. they didn't kill it straight out and i finally got them off him and he got away, but i don't know if he died later of injuries or not. i never found him. he didn't have any visible id/collar.

my cat still goes out. he roams. i know he does but i still don't know how to fix it. he crosses streets. he carouses with other cats. i know he could die out there. i know the chances of him dying under the tires of a car or getting trapped in somebody's shed or being mauled by a dog are there. but i still haven't found a way to keep him inside without stressing him to the point of bloody urine all over my house.

sorry. it just upsets me. i don't agree with letting cats out but i can't manage to do what i agree with when it comes to this particular cat. sigh.

the description of how the mangled cat was killed. I killed a large possum that had been hit in the face too but don't feel that any of you would appriciate knowing how it was done in detail.:(

Ahh but if the graphic and honest nature of that post shocks people into actually trying to look after their cat.. or at least understand the risk (some people in this thread seem to have this idea that nothing will happen to 'their' cat.) I think its a good thing.

If your description of killing the possum would possible save the lives of wild critters.. then I sure would appreciate you posting it!

I"Ts not going to change people's minds. Because their going to do what their going to do. If you really are sincere about it, fight for leash laws for cats or whatever it's equivilant is. Until that happens people will go on doing what their doing. I moved into one apt building that had a tenate next door that had over 30. I found a dead cat in the basement on a regular basis.Animal horders will always exist, mentally ill will do what this neighbor did. And there will be people as desperate with a cat that bleeds urine and climbs the walls like Eddie that don't know what else to do like i did. I will be the first one to say i was horrid to let him out. WIth every indigo bunting, and mocking bird i had to bury. I suppose i should have put Eddie to sleep, he never would have accepted an indoor life. I know what i did is wrong, and he was incredibly lucky to make it 19 years and have an old age pts as his end. AS it is not one neighbor in three different neighborhoods ever complained, and he did keep to the woods and his property. But that didn't make it right.

I will have that awful throat cut in my mind for the rest of the day, i would have gone a much less painful way but hopefully the animal was in too much shock and pain to ever know the difference. THe now your here and now your not method imo is preferable.

. WIll it stop my neighbor with her "Recues" that run in my yard? nope. IF i described the possum in detail would it get the driver that hit it and drove off to take responsiblity for their own action? nope. IT would only upset certain tender members i know on here that will email me and report. SO i added a warning.

I never said I think cats should be able to roam as they please. I said I let my cats outside. They are not outside all day. Sure, they are outside unsupervised..I don't have 15 sets of eyes. And anyone I meet, talk to I recommend they keep their cat indoors. But in my situation, I can't keep them all indoors. Simple as that.

Did they find them mangled and still alive? I think that is more horrific than finding them dead and telling yourself it was quick. Its horrible to hit a dog too!!

I was driving along and this person was walking down the sidewalk with their dog off leash in a very nice heel. I slowed down a little (just in case) The dog bolted right in front of my car. I hammered the breaks. Luckily the dog was fine. I hit him but I was almost stopped by that time.

Let me tell you that owner was VERY shook up over it. Witnessing it or hearing about it (non sugar coated) might make people think.

If it doesn't then nothing is going to help them.

In regards to comments/responses to me about how eating factory raised animals is cruel and hunting animals is not cruel or less cruel, I agree that factory farming is cruel. I dont support factory farming, nor do I support so-called "happy meat." I dont consume animal products. I am vegan because I believe that all animals have the capacty to suffer, to feel sadness, boredom, pain and dread, and that all value their own lives, and that because I know from personal experience that eating a well balanced healthy plant-based diet is better for you and for the environment (not to mention for the animals who unsurprisingly struggle and resist being slaughtered).

{Just wanted to be clear about this since a few people commented to me on the cruelty of factory farming and so that people know what my position is with respect to factory farmed animals and indeed the broader issues around that. :)}
