I got a letter in the mail today from my vet saying that Blaze needs to be neutered.

It was a whole FRICKIN' PAGE LONG of reasons why I should fix him.

They say -in bold letters- it's an INVESTMENT. And it's a community responsiblity. *sigh*

Maybe it's just me, but they seem a bit pushy about it. Everytime we've gone in there they say on his little chart thingy that (in bold letters also) NEUTER PROCEDURE. And now I get a letter in the mail about it. I got one for Jake, too.

It's MY choice as to when I neuter him. I think I told the vet at the first visit (yes, they were ALREADY talking about fixing him at 7 weeks old) that I wasn't sure when/if he was getting fixed.

I'm still not sure whats going to happen. But my gosh, they seem pushy!

I think that is a good thing for most pet owners.

But I would let them know in no uncertain terms the next time you visit that you plan to leave him intact and you would appreciate no more castration reminders.

I especially like using the castration word if it's a male vet or tech.

;)

I should say this too. I COMPLETELY understand the need for a personal letter, and lots of reminders, but since I said that at his first visit, I would think they would listen.

I actually think it's a GOOD thing that try to reach out to the people, we have a HUGE over-population problem here.

You would think after you told them that you would take it under advisement, that they could drop it, at least for a while . . .

sometimes these things are computer generated...by age of the dog, and vet records. It may be their system for trying to get JQP to neuter. I think I would just reaffirm with them that you are not planning to do this until a later date.....how late will be up to you.

they don't with Beau either. Depends on which vet, but one still bugs us. Every time without fail. 'So.... when do you want to schedule his neuter?'

Um.... show dog.... needs his cojones. You'd think they'd mark it on his paperwork somewhere.

I wouldn't take it personally. Even though you've said that you're planning to leave him intact... well... there are a good number of people in this world who need to be persuaded otherwise. I can name quite a few, most of whom are planning on breeding their dogs, despite, well, I have a whole laundry list of reasons why they shouldn't.

Though I agree that a letter seems like a *bit* much. Geez.

I can't say that I have EVER gotten a letter from the vet of this nature. Shot reminders and even "birthday" cards...........but never a spay/neuter reminder.

I think it's quite pushy, even if it's computer generated.

If you have your reasons for keeping him intact, than just stand by your decision. The vast majority of their clients probably would benefit from receiving that letter, either because they've forgotten to make the appointment or because they need to see the other side of the story. I agree that they probably send one out to all intact males at X months old. I wouldn't take it personally.

Yes, Mafia, they both are down and out now :lol-sign:  I've had no problems so far with lots of marking, aggression, etc.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels it's a bit pushy.

Thats different though. A breeder has more say in a breeding than a vet. I would be more happy to see a breeder do this, than a vet.

Personally, I would be pretty offended if they kept harassing me about it going so far as to send me letters after I made it clear he was staying intact and why. I'd probably go as far as writing a letter back as to why I'm going to a different vet who actually listens to the needs of their clients. I know that's an extreme response, but people being pushy like that with my stuff, family, animals, etc. is a really big pet peeve of mine.

I wish. Because sometimes, I would be inclinded to use a different vet. But the others around here I wouldn't even use in an emergency :(

I honestly wouldn't be bothered by it, and think it's a good idea.
I knew I was going to get Lucy spayed ASAP but I would have been pretty excited to get a letter like that from my vet... some people are just clueless and don't know the importance of it, or they just never get around to making an appointment... reminders are good.

It's not something I would take personally if I were planning on leaving my dog intact... I really wouldn't expect a vet to mark down that you're not sure of what you're going to do in regard to neutering.

I would send the letter back. Tell em thanks for the spam, and add in a page of reasons why NOT (or why wait) to neuter. LOL

I do that with all the spam stuff that comes with bills. Send it right back to them.
