I really hate living with a soul-sucking pessimistic person that shoots every single thing I have to say down with scathing negativity.

I thought by 23 you're supposed to start the realization that your mother was actually right about things, and you start to build a relationship beyond that "teenage angst" period. Nope.

I now know that everything I say is "stupid" or not worth talking about. K thanks mom.
Right there with you. Always around if you'd like to vent. :(

My dad is what he calls a realist, but I think he is really a closet pessimist. He also shoots down every idea I have for my life if it doesn't sound like I can make money at it... there is more to life than making money, dad. mom is more open to my ideas.
It's the exact opposite in my house. My Dad is always there to support whatever life goals I have. My mother thinks if it's not her idea, it's a stupid one.

Thanks, I really appreciate it :)
It's good to know that I'm not alone. I mean it sucks that other people have to go through the same crap, but yeah..

Funny, my dad is like that at my house. I really don't mean to talk bad about him, he really is a good man and a good dad, and I know he is just trying to help and keep me grounded, but geeze ... sometimes people need to wear their rose colored shades, man!

Yes, I do deal with what some people would call "disabilities".Just because I do, doesn't mean I can't do anything. And, frankly, I'm sick of people treating me that way.

I was looking into child related career. Some made a remark that I wasn't fit for that particular career,& that I shouldn't even try.

(((HUGS))) I'm really sorry.

I know someone just like that. However they are teenager. Still. It annoys the heck out of me.

Psh. I'm a teacher and I feel like having gone through struggles just makes you more fit to work with kids. Just being a kid is hard, especially once they hit middle and high school. I feel like the teachers I know who have had to struggle with things like depression or educational impairments are more sensitive to kids and don't just write them off or let them fall through the cracks ans opposed to teachers who sailed through school, fit in really well and thought everything was easy.

I'm sorry both of you are dealing with this. It sucks when you live with a "buzz Killington". The plus side is my fiancee is an eternal optimist and counter acts anything dad might tell me.

I think the pledge of allegiance is creepy.

Last I checked saying that, about a group of children every day forced to chant their allegiance to a flag with blank stares does not make me "anti-american"

You see I thought the whole freedom thing meant we could question things and voice our opinions and not be forced to do such a thing but it turns out, that's isn't true and I should "go back to where I came from"

You know that place that isn't America where all the brown people come from. We just fall from the sky

Omg. My sweet adorable little child did not want to sleep last night. At all. I finally laid on the floor of his room next to him and he just played and played. Every time I would try to put him down screaming. Finally went to sleep when I kicked my husband out of the bed and I took him in there with me. I guess for almost nine months one sleepless night is not bad but do not make this a thing!!

I've felt that way about it since elementary school :/ I certainly don't feel obliged to pledge any allegiance to this country. Not even like I chose or wanted to be in it, just happens to be where my parents are.

No, I don't either. Your saying that you are a part of this country and and agree what it stands for "one nation, under god, indivisible. With liberty and justice for all" I don't understand how that is bad? But everyone has their own view of things.

I personally find "ring around the Rosie" to be much creepier than the pledge.

It's not that it's bad, per-say, but America has a lot of ingrown issues that it continues to fail to solve that many other countries have long been over, so I just hate the whole attitude school had when I was younger, or at every single sporting event, if-you-don't-pledge-you-disrespect-the-whole-country.

I just kind of exist here, but I don't have a sense of loyalty or feel the need to sing the praises of a country with this many issues.

Actually brought back some memories about why I feel so distanced from it. I certainly don't want to be pledging allegiance where I still have so many days in society where I feel like I'm being punished just for being a brown person, and that whole hierarchy was the basis for so many years.

My ancestors were native American, so I know what it's like to be "punished". But, I always stand with my hand over my heart when I recite the pledge, or sing the national anthem, I do this not necessarily to ho or the country, but the men who served and died for it.

To me if someone doesn't stand for the national anthem and show respect, they are disrespecting every man and woman who served and died for THEIR right to be disrespectful.

You do realize that the under god part was added in the 1950s right?

I think the pledge is creepy.

National Anthem I stand for. Pledge and God Bless America I would not.

I just vacuumed this morning and then Hank brought in a bunch of pinecones and shredded them everywhere. :( It looks like I haven't vacuumed in weeks now.

That's what I get for propping the back door open all day. But it's SO NICE outside.

Yeah, I don't really follow.
People have said that they feel like they can't honor our country because they are a "brown person" which makes about as much since as me saying that since my grandmother is full blooded Cherokee Indian, I couldn't bear to consider myself part of this country because of the hardships her ancestors suffered.

Your experience is your own ... Do you look obviously Native American? Even if you did that does not discount others experiences or feelings.

For me, I'm pretty much uncomfortable having it be ritual pledging allegiance to and singing the praises of a government where for a good century it was perfectly okay to ship my bygone relatives across the ocean and mistreat them. Bygones would be bygones for me but I still encounter so many situations where just because i am who I am, there's prejudice coming from people in professions that it simply should not be at all. Obviously there should be no prejudice, but what gets me is people in office and holding ranks where it's pretty hypocritical to simultaneously have the pledge that we do. Equality for all? Some, but many times not me. Even in a diverse city.
