(And I don't have any pics of my dogs with kids.)
i don't either. i wish i'd taken my camera to the parade this morning. luce was getting mauled left and right by enthusiastic kids who were as thrilled with her as she was with them. there was much kissing, hugging, wagging, and laughter.

I would like to point out that I trust my doberman with kids before the beagle. The beagle has a much lower snaping point than the doberman.

What I find MOST saddening about this situation... is that it was widely publicized. Non-fatal bite to the face. Do you realize how many children are bitten in the face every year? I'm not positive about the numbers, but children are most commonly bitten, and the face is one of the most common places - because it's usually when the kid's face is in the dog's face, denoting that the child was being rude and unsupervised.

The first thing that came to mind, was our childhood Cocker Spaniel. He ripped a huge chunk out of my sister's cheek; probably ALOT worse than this bite. She needed 300 stitches. But, were news reporters knocking on our dog asking about the "vicious Cocker Spaniel"? No. Was he being euthanized? Nope. In fact, he went back to his breeder, and lived a long life with her.

It's just ridiculous that these cases are sensationalized... of course it's sad, but it happens, a lot, in all breeds. It's the result of an unstable dog and a bad situation, irregardless of the breed involved. I bet the dog wasn't even a Pit Bull! D:<

Bit in the face by a Dalmatian, wasn't in the news either. Indeed, the only being who got in trouble over than incident was me . . . not the dog, not the dog's owner (my grandmother). I was essentially told "serves you right" . . . which considering I'd figured that out the minute it happened just impressed the point.

But if its a pit bull, or a rottie, or a german shepherd, its proof that the breed is vicious . . .

If its a poodle or a cocker or a dalmatian (many of which actually ARE mean) or a jack russel . . . they were "playing" or "defending themselves" or it was an "accident" . .

Sigh.

:p

I was bitten in the face by my aunt's black lab. Sweet heart of a dog, but I was in her backyard, she was asleep (as well as old and deaf) and I didnt see her and stepped on her tail. Got bit on my check, but nothing was said about the dog or me. Took a few stitches, but I was fine. :p

Almost every pit bull Ive been around has been a huge mushball. :D

I remember there was a dalmation in the news YEARS ago. He ripped of a childs ear. I was just shocked because I've NEVER heard an "innocent" breed attacking before. This was back when I was a kid.

Gee, doesn't THAT sound familiar!!??
My old neighbor's two Golden Retrievers killed a Rottweiler and a Dachshund, as well as broke into my yard and attacked my pit bull and my Boxer. The dogs went back to their breeder, no euthanasia, no reporters whatsoever.

Why?

Well, they're Golden Retrievers OF COURSE!

If they're pit bulls on the other hand..

Gee what a different story:rolleyes:

Reports of all dog attacks can be found ....it depends on the attack , not the breed....I doubt if a toy could rip off a child's face , and maybe 5 to 10 stitches wouldn't be news worthy . And Dizzy , I agree , we should think of the child and the family's pain .....this could have happened from any badly bred and socialized large dog . There are lemons in every breed .

Errr . . . . not feelin' a whole lot of sad for adults if they've left a toddler and a dog unsupervised.

EXACTLY. What I don't understand is...was the dog known to be aggressive, or did they just label him aggressive because of his breed?

I didn't read anything that said it was an aggressive type bite or an accident playing or startled dog type bite. So far everyone seems to have decided that if there were teeth involved it had to be aggression, I guess. Gotta figure if the dog bit aggressively it would have been a whole lot worse. I've known 15 pounders who would've done more damage.

I definately feel sorry for the kid, who was just being a kid. At that age, whatever he was doing, he was just being a kid, they don't know better.

I feel sorry for his family to an extent. Depending on the exact circumstances, I might feel very sorry for them. I don't know the circumstances in enough detail. Perhaps the dog was gentle, and they'd stepped out of the room for a few minutes and trusted the dog. Foolish, ignorant, but not to the point where I wouldn't feel sorry for them. Or they may have had a mean dog and left the kid with it while they went to smoke dope next door. I don't know. So I don't know if I should feel sorry for them.

However, this is a dog board. Not a kid board or a parent board. We may feel sorry for the kid and his family, but our concern, the reason we are having this conversation, is because of the mistreatment of dogs, especially particular breeds of dogs, due to human mistakes and irresponsibility. So, therefore, we are talking about . . . the dog.

if those 5-10 stitches came from a pit bull, rest assured they would be newsworthy. these days the media is reporting pit bull almost attacks and pit bull bit-but-didn't-break-skins.

there have been deaths attributed to a pomeranian, a westie, and a jack russell, so don't dismiss small dogs as safe, just because they're small.

we have had (adult) clients at work end up in the emergency room for stitches after bites from breeds as small as a toy fox terrier and a poodle/bichon mix. if those bites had landed on the faces of small children, they would have done significant damage.
