Great post, Nicole.
This is very sad to read that some people find it impossible to go out of their way and inconvenience themselves for the pet that they took into their lives, therefore promising to care for the rest of the pet's life, especially veterinary care. No pet owner is perfect and most don't have constant abundant money, but if you can't keep that promise, don't get a pet.

I would hate to be a animal and live with you. I am so appauled by this whole thread, I dont even really know what to say. I have 2 cats, and 5 dogs, a mother who doesnt work because of being disabled, and I just started a 40hr a week job. Yet, all my dogs are up to date on shots, recieve monthly Revolution, always have food at the house, and guess what, if a emergency poped up invovling ALL of them, they would ALL be at the E vets. I have taken a puppy to the E vet because it was a while before she POOPED. Yes, the E Vet because I was worried about her NOT POOPING! So for you to sit there, and not take that poor animal to the vet... it just beyond me. You really need to turn your animals over to a rescue if you can not afford to properly care for the animals.
Animals are like children, they depend on YOU for everything! When they are hungry, they dont go to the kitchen and fix them a sandwich. When they dont feel good, they cant go to the dr. alone. YOU took on all those animals, and shame on you for not being able to fullfil thier every need. And your age is not a excuse.... at 14 my animals ALWAYS came first. But hey, maybe I am just strange and unusual. *insert fed up sign*

Sure enough. Might as well give your life. But being a dedicated owner you would already do that. ;) We're back to square one.

Hi guys,

AP's older sister here. Thought I could shed a little bit of light on this situation....

As far as the vet situation - our previous vet, who was both a large animal vet provincially and had a small animal practice on his own terms (outside of provincial hours) did, in fact, retire the end of July and move to Africa to take part in some agriculture studies and projects there. There is no lie to any of that. We have access to provincial vets for our large animals and fortunately have not required their assistance in the time since our vet retired. There is one (yes, one) provincial vet that we do prefer for our horses - but we haven't found another quite like our previous vet that could look after everyone.

Of course, this is a cat, not a horse. We are still in the process of scouring for a small animal vet that does not talk condescendingly to pet owners and charges reasonable fees (because who doesn't want to save a buck?). If this cat were truly in distress requiring a vet, she would have seen a vet, believe me - just because we have not chosen one to become a regular patron of does not mean that we are not aware of our options in the area!). I will be the first to admit (and AP probably will after she sits back and looks at things) that AP is a bit of a drama queen (who wasn't when they were 14? And I still am on occasion!). The situation was not nearly as dire as she proclaimed it to be.

For those of you who are saying things like you would hate to be an animal under our care, shame on you! You do not have any concept of the inner workings of our animal ownership and the hours, dollars, tears and time we have put into the care of several animals over the years for whom we were not required to care. I won't bother to list all of them attempting to make myself sound like a saint, but I can guarantee you that while our animals may not recieve the MOST EXPENSIVE of care, they do not recieve second rate veterinary care. In a situation where it were the difference between spending $2500 in surgery and aftercare of a cat who broke it's leg (I actually had a former roommate who did this), we would probably have the cat PTS. Not cruelty, common sense. Before you say I am hard hearted, believe me - I have lost with the best of them if some of you remember the devastating blow I had last year when I lost my riding horse to colic (which, if any of you remember, a necropsy proved was absolutely not any of my influence - so no, no second rate care there!).... It's just that growing up on a farm, I have become very realistic and frank about most things - namely life and death.

Some of you were bothered that we would, in the past, call our vet, and he would instruct us. We have had a working relationship with the aforementioned vet for two decades. He knew that we knew our animals better than anyone else, and that my mother, bless her heart, is the most determined person when it comes to veterinary care. If someone says "that will never live/heal/work properly again", she is determined to prove them wrong.... as a result, we have had countless representatives living in our HOUSE for periods of times - basically anything that has lived in our barn has had a representative live in our house (horse, sheep, pig, goat, donkey, bunny, chickens) - even when the animal does not belong to us! As a result, our veterinarian has always felt us competent to follow his direction, and would often come to administer vaccinations and allow us to administer the shots. Why? Especially with a large flight animal like a horse, doesn't it make sense to allow a person with whom the animal is intimately familiar and comfortable, and who is also competent with administration of needles to administer them? A lot more sense than putting someone less familiar with the animal in a situation that could potentially be dangerous (a kick, perhaps?).... that is what AP meant about it. That's not to say that our veterinarian did not come to our farm many times over those twenty years. He was overheard jokingly telling another provincial vet that if we called and said he needed to come out, he knew it was a real emergency and never wasted time.

We have had SPCA representatives at our farm for unfounded calls tell us that if everyone cared for their animals the way that we did, they would be out of a job. What all of you are judging on is a few words misconstrued on a forum... with absolutely no indication of tone or sincerity except that which you put on the message yourself.

I have not used Chaz in some time - not because I was ever needlessly attacked but the whole lot of you work like a pack of dogs (fitting, isn't it?). You whip into a frenzy without looking at an entire situation or bothering to ask further questions to identify the situation truly. I was so tired of watching the whole gang of you "stick it to" people you claim to be "terrible owners", that while I greatly enjoyed the company of some of you, the overzealous, whining, drama queen lot got very old, very quickly, and I took my leave.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it should be pretty obvious that a 14 year old backed into a corner by a pack of rabid dogs is going to lash out and some of the things they say might not be coherent because it's that automatic fight instinct. No one wants to be told (especially someone who has as deep a love and as much natural instinct for animals as AP does) that they are a horrible person by someone who is not inside of the situation.

I actually just came from looking the abovementioned cat over. Purring and snoozing, like the elderly cat that she is. My firm belief is that she is more scared than injured, if she is injured at all beyond a bit of hair scuffed off her.

Take what you will of this post, I thought I might just shed some light and inform some of you that the lies and half truths that you have percieved are not exactly as they seem. If anyone cares to discuss this with me further, you can email me - [email protected]. I won't likely be back to check this thread.
