All four of my animals (yes, even the cats) were microchipped awake at a fundraiser. No shaving, no sedating, no numbing.

Of course I would prefer to do it while they're sedated (that's how Ruca's was done) but if I'm not planning ton sedate the pet for something else... I'm not going to sedate just for a microchip!

That being said, we did a lot of 8 week old puppies at work in conjunction with their vaccines and most of them barely flinched.

The rescue I worked for microchipped all of the dogs while awake and conscious and un-shaved (we did it ourselves rather than having the vet do it while they were under for their spay/neuter), I would say the majority of them were fine, either didn't notice or just gave a little flinch. A few were dramatic about it (some started screaming before you even touched them with the needle ), but nothing to worry about.

Missy and Sassy were both chipped awake and conscious, and they were just fine. Jack was chipped when the rescue recieved him (surrender) so I have no clue. His chip is having migratory issues, so he may end up being chipped again.

Wow, niether Frag or Recon (which have similar coats to Zander) had to be shaved for their chips, or any vaccines, ever. :yikes:

I don't let vets take dogs out of the room without me, though, either.

That looks sore.... Do you think its because he was moving about? Why wouldn't they let you hold him?? Very odd.

Bodhi had hers done as a puppy and it was quick, no shave needed.. I wasn't there for Fred's as he had it done by the breeder, but he wasn't shaved.

Neither had any swelling, blood or apparent soreness.

This is why Keeva still isn't chipped. I have the weirdest, most persistent subconscious needle phobia since having a painful vaccination, and I'm just horrified by the size of the microchip needle. I had my rescued/foster pit bulls boys done at a vaccine clinic. They gave them some lidocaine and neither cried, but... they were pit x's that already survived hell. I just know that Keeva's gonna cry or something, and then I'll pass out. LOL

Blossom was done while she was under for her hysterectomy, which is by far my preference for chipping, LOL. I may honestly just wait to do Keeva's when she gets her OFA x-rays and what not, since she turns 2 in May anyway.

Anyway, poor Zander. That is crazy, they totally butchered that IMO. I have never seen more than a single drop of blood from a microchipping, and none of the dogs I've done personally have even had that. Poor baby. :(

I think it's a liability issue? If you're restraining your dog while a procedure is being done, and you get bit...

Also there are people like my mom who make horrible restrainers lol, and as soon as the dog wiggles or makes any sort of struggle, they let go. Which is not helpful. I'm not saying this would have been the cae with Lyzelle, just in general most people aren't really that great at it if they're not trained in how to do it. They get too worried that they're hurting their pet or they just end up being more in the way.

Now I'm super happy Sara just brought the chips with her and did Traveler and Didgie when she stopped by my house.

Neither cared that much, Traveler seemed more upset with being restrained and Didgie gave a little yip. But neither seemed put out much at all and no shaving happened.
