Pffft. Those spikes are weak. Get one of these.

I'm going to get one for my dog so she can perforate the couch and my legs. Oh yeah. And I can spike notes onto her collar so she can act as a messenger for me! Dude!
LOL
I hate spiked collars...and if you own a pitbull and put one of those on it, you're definately not helping with the friendly dog image we're all striving for...

God that looks more like a porcupine than a collar!!!

Double :yikes: !!! Do you actually own that ???
No, I don't, but, if I owned a dog that guarded livestock, as that dog with the collar does, I would own one.

But during such a sensitive time when so many dogs are already labeled as "dangerous," why would anyone want to play into the hands of the public at large? They already seem to have enough fuel.
Not just anyone would. Most average people who want a tough dog would probably be too afraid to even have one of these collars. Some of the toughest macho men are afraid of sharp objects. ;)
These collars are for one thing, protection. There are fashionable spiked collars, and those used for working dogs. Anyone with a mere pet walking down the street with one of these on isn't just anyone, they're an idiot. They probably have no clue as to what the collars are actually made to be used for.

In a heartbeat, as I said, with the right dog and situation, I'd own these collars. I see no point in putting a guardian at risk while doing his job. He needs some sort of defense beyond just his size. The neck is very vulnerable, these help. That's all.

I keep thinking of those ranchers out West who are up in arms about wolves being reintroduced to the regions. I think they should take a step back in time, get a couple of LGD's and a spiked collar or two and see how much luck the wolves have then.

O.K., personally I'd not like to be the person to put the stock dog collar on, the dog.
How do they fasten? Like a prong collar; with one of the prongs going through the loops.
I think I'd like to practise a bit before I attempted to get it on my dog and stab myself in the hand, leg, arm, eeek!

Personally, I don't LOVE spikes. Some collars look okay, but generally it's a no for me.

And I agree. Dobes, Rotties, Pitties... They already have a bad image. For the sake of your dogs future, couldn't you just stick to nylon or something a little less... 'Bad'?

If/When I get another Pit Bull Terrier, I'd like a nice wide collar. :)
The Collarmania collars always catch my eye. :D

However, I am looking for a good Chow breeder, and for the life of me, have no clue what kind of collar would look good on a rough coated Chow! Dog fashion dilemma, LOL.

I hate those kind of collars with the spikes on them, and as a Rottie owner, I would never let my girls be seen wearing a collar like some of the ones posted. It feeds the image people already have. I can however, understand thier original purpose.

Same goes for rough collies. I could put a piece of clothesline rope on Tosca and nobody would know. Not that I do, but collars are a waste on her in general, so I just use collars that are comfortable for her.

I like wide, studded collars, but am not into spikes so much. Besides, the way my Horsemen wrestle, somebody would end up losing an eye.

Exactly WHY these collars shouldn't be used at dog parks! I met two twenty something year old "boys" a few weeks ago over the place I walk and they have two litter mates American bulldogs 1 girl 1 boy. They were 10 months old and they had the spiked collars on them they said "to protect their dogs" from the other dogs if they fought  .
Yeah, Am.bulldogs they don't need protection :lol-sign: perhaps the jack russell should have one on then to be protected from your dog.........

lol, i agree, for the average dog and owner, your dog doesnt NEED protecting!

but thinking bout it, if i was to ever take vixie and dodger (and now Bailey) to a dog park and they had to go in with the big dogs, i think they would be wearing their spiked collars that day, might make any dog over 10bs think twice before trying to put my dogs entire head in their mouths lol.
but we dont have a dog park here so... but it did happen, we were walking and saw some womans shepard mix decide this little poms head looked just like a tennisball and her entire head up to her shoulders was in his mouth before we had chance to blink (when the idiot let go of her dogs lead whe it pulled) luckily we were close enough, the poms owner was tiny, i think the pom weighe dmore than she did and the shepards owners yelling from down the street, "oh he likes her, hes saying hello" so i grabbed the shepard my frined grabed the pom and we proceded to remove the dogs head form the separds mouth, luckily the pom was wearing a ute little fashion spiked collar and i think the spikes in the roof of his mouth was the only reason that shepard didnt bite down.
so i can understand that kind of protection on a 3lb chihuahua then
but for heavens sake how much protection does something like a rottie, pit or am-bully need in an everyday situation.
I mean heck ive never seen a spiked collor on any of the LGB's ive seen, the place we got our parrot from has too anatolian shepards to protect the birds when noones there, they dont wear spikes so why does some puppy whos probably never even MET an agressive dog?!

i dont mind the less extreme spiked collars, but i hate seeing breeds like the APBT and rottie wearing them...it does absolutly nothing good for their image.... Awhile back a guy came into the park with a litte rottie/pit mix puppy with the most ridiculous spiked collar on..i mean the puppy was no more thn 15lbs and the spikes on this thing were huge and not to mention sharp! Biting my tounge i walked up to him and asked him to take it off of him, and that it was seriously a disaster waiting to happen  He also had the cutest mastiff puppy, but the poor boy had a HUGE chain on AND a big padlock... poor baby couldnt even lift his neck

Jaime's Bulldog has a spiked collar to...it's not that extreme though. She only puts in on him when they go out...only for a little bit. It's more of a fashion statement.

A-freaking-men. The average person seeing a dog wearing one of these collars, is going to make a split second judgement call about the dog wearing it- does the owner REALLY want it to be: "That animal is dangerous and untrustworthy?" Because that IS what that type of collar says to the average Joe, whether or not that is your intention.

I'm not about to give ANYONE a reason for thinking my dogs are dangerous. Not in a day and age where breed bans, mandatory spay and neuter, and mass hysteria are all too realistic a worry for anyone who owns a dog-aggressive breed, or a breed with a bad rap in the eye of the public. To add more fuel to the fire purely because of a desire for my animals to be "fashionable" seems not only downright ridiculous, but pretty selfish as well. With all the people working their butts off to prove their animals are wonderful canine citizens, why be the one to keep propagating long-held stereotypes and misconceptions? I'm sure that's not the intent of most people who own these things, but that IS how it comes across to the average person.

A FUNCTIONAL spiked collar on an LGD that actually HAS a job- THAT I have no complaints with. It has a purpose, and that purpose isn't a fashion statement.

I can't even imagine the collars I posted being a fashion statement, LOL.

I'm pretty sure I'd roll over laughing before judging, if I saw the average joe trying to be serious with that on their dog.

I'd do a lot of things...but laughing probably wouldn't be the first one that comes to mind. Questioning the mental health of the dog's owner? Now THAT probably WOULD come to mind first.

I doubt the kind of collars you posted are even on the radar of most pet owners. What I'm talking about are the spiked collars that are clearly intended more as fashion statements than as actual protective devices. (And honestly, what exactly does today's PET dobe or rottie DO that require their neck be protected by metal spikes? If it's owned by anyone with a modicum of responsibility...pretty much nothing).
