I'm going to spend a long weekend in DC with a friend soon. We're planning on seeing the National Zoo and hitting some museums.

I was wondering if any NoVa natives had suggestions on must-see places. Or holes in the wall to eat at? :)

I was there in June for the first time. My biggest recommendation is get a really good map, because the city is not a grid, there are multiples of all the street names and numbers, and it's REALLY confusing.

I ate at a place called Teaism which was really good, the tea was awesome and the food was delicious.

Everything there is pretty big and time consuming, so if you're just going for the weekend you really have to pick and choose and rush through some stuff.

We're in NJ, but we love going to DC. Must sees for us are the war memorials on the mall, especially the Viet Nam one, and the Air Force Memorial. The last time we were in DC, we discovered the FDR Memorial. It's really pretty cool. It's tucked back into a corner over by the ball fields. Don't get the wrong impression when I say tucked- it meanaders on for quite a while.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm making a notebook with ideas.

I'll miss my bratters. It's been awhile since I went on a vacation without them. I already ordered them doggie cupcakes to give to them when I get back. It's the guilt. LOL

The Museum of Natural History is a good one. They have a really cool new mammal exhibit. The National Arboretum is nice. So is the National Cathedral. And of course the National Mall and all its monuments. There is a really good Mexican restaurant called Tortilla Coast near Capitol Hill. The new Capitol Visitor's Center is nice. You can go see ChinaTown. And for night life, Adams Morgan. Pick up a Where Magazine at your hotel, and it gives you a lot of stuff that's going on.

There is so much to see, really. :)

Caliterp recommended I go to the Mount Vernon House (where Washington lived, I believe), and I really, really wanted to do that, but didn't get a chance.

If you have not been to a Five Guys Burgers, that is a must.
I would also recommend Ray's Hell Burger, the President takes guests there.
Also BGR the Burger Joint is fantastic.

Mie N Yu: Best Restaurants in Washington DC Best Restaurants Georgetown Restaurants in Georgetown is really awesome. It is a little pricey though.
If you are in your twenties or thirties Georgetown has a pretty cool nightlife too.

If you are going to be staying in Northern Virginia I would head to the Shirleyton Village. It is right off of the 395. It has two rows of really great places to eat. A little further down is a great restaurant, Poets and Busboys.

My favorites in DC proper:

-Spy Museum ($--operation spy is awesome though) Home | International Spy Museum
-American History Museum (free)
-DC Improv (for evening fun) Welcome to the DC IMPROV
-Going to the top of the Washington Monument ($1.50 to reserve tickets ahead of time--highly suggested). Washington Monument National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)
-Kayaking in Georgetown on the Potomac if the weather is nice (This will require a car, there is no metro to Georgetown) Jack's Boathouse - Washington, DC

Just outside DC:

-Old Town Alexandria (restaurants, walking around, dinner cruises, etc). Probably not worth visiting on it's own, but if you go to Mount Vernon, I'd totally eat here before/after.
-Mount Vernon (This is AWESOME. It could easily zap up 5+ hours if you wanted to wander and see everything. It's in Alexandria, about 10-15 miles south of DC, but totally worth it. They have a lot of the old buildings recreated or restored to walk through)

Best restaurants in the NoVA area, hands down, are the Great American Restaurant Co. They're all at least 20 minutes from downtown though. Great American Restaurants

If you want places in DC proper, check out Restaurants and Restaurant Reservations | OpenTable You can make reservations there ahead of time, view menus, etc.

Sadly, I find the zoo pretty bleh. The animal enclosures are all tiny, the animals always look bored, and it's not all that big. (Bring your walking shoes though, it's HILLY!)

Realistically, if you're only coming for the weekend, you could spend your entire time on the National Mall (take the metro to L'Enfant or Smithsonian) and just walk around. If you go into all the free museums and go to all the monuments, that could easily take your whole time. There's not really any food in the area though, so I'd walk or metro over to Gallery Place/China town/Penn Quarter and find food there. Matchbox is awesome, as is Jaleo (sangria!) and Oyamel.

If you have specific questions, let me know. I'm heading out of the country tomorrow night, but I'll answer anything until then!

Oh! Also, totally join this website: https://www.goldstar.com/

You can find half price (or better!) tickets to literally hundreds of things in the area. If you end up going to the spy museum or want a hop on/hop off bus tour (which would get you to all the touristy things in a day), buy your tickets on there for cheap. I've purchased theater tickets on there several times and been really pleased with it.

Jon Stewart, right? Isn't Colbert's Keep the Fear Alive on the same weekend?
Yah. It's pretty much the same gig. Colbert is doing his Keep Fear Alive bit to mock the Republicans and Stewart is doing his bit to counter that. I'd say Stewart's bit is the real reason and message of the rally (stop dividing the country in petty bullshit and let's work together) while Colbert's is to illustrate the kind of **** they're speaking out against.

I will third or fourth Mount Vernon. They allow dogs on the ground too!

The Natural History Museum is always good. The National Arborteum is a perfect place for a long walk. The Zoo is a must. The Air and Space museum if you are interested . .. and the secondary museum out near Dullas where they have the space shuttle prototype.

As for food, try Zorba's Cafe . . . its really good Greek food and right next to the Dupont Circle metro.
